Coprophagia- When your dog eats p**p.

Although it may seem disgusting to us, puppies eating their p**p is pretty common. They typically grow out of this habit by the time they turn 1 year old.

There are several reasons why your puppy may be eating his or another dog’s p**p. The first thing is to rule out any medical reason for this habit. Conditions such as malabsorption of food, worms, parasites, or a gastrointestinal issue must first be checked.

If the cause is behavioral, it is important to teach your dog the “leave it” command and also provide mental stimulation with canine enrichment games.

Dogs also do this sometimes out of boredom, so spending time playing games, longer walks and teaching commands and manners goes a long way in eliminating unwanted behaviors.

Pure pumpkin or fresh pineapple can change the taste of p**p and be a good option to try as well.

In the meantime, you must be vigilant and pick up any p**p as soon as you see it to curb the behavior until your dog learns to “leave it”.

Did you know the most challenging time to raise a puppy is when they’re “teenagers’? The adolescent period for dogs usually begins around 8 months or so and continues until around age two. This is the time when they seem to “forget” everything they have ever been taught.
