Sosa is a 9-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog/Pup. She pulls on the leash (like most puppies), and isn't very enthusiastic about getting into a car. With a little guidance, today was different! She did fantastic. I was very proud of her! You can watch her in action here:

A rare find!

Henley is an incredibly smart and well socialized 4 year old, female, Portuguese Water Dog. She was a “COVID puppy” and was recently surrendered due to lack of time.

She will do best with a 6’ fenced yard with lots of room to run and play. She loooooves her ball and will play fetch all day if you let her.

She is house trained, crate trained, dog, cat and kid friendly. She walks well on a leash, and she loves car rides!

Henley has grown up with a family that loved her, and her ideal home would have a family member around all the time.

"Leave it!" This is the most important command to teach your dog.

Beginning steps:

1.) Low distraction environment
2.) Medium value resource
3.) High value resource
4.) Increase time and distance

Notes:
▪️Keep your sessions no more than 5 minutes at first.
▪️Repeat each step until your dog has mastered it, then move on to the next.
▪️Never deliver treats from the floor. (You want to be sure your dog knows they are coming directly from you.)
▪️Every dog is different, so sometimes adjustments have to be made.

When meeting an unfamiliar dog that is nervous, shy, or afraid:

▪️Use a calm monotone voice, not an overly excited squeaky voice, or don't talk at all.
▪️Let the dog come to you instead of approaching him.
▪️Avoid making direct eye contact or extending your hand towards his face for him to smell it. (When you do this, you risk getting bit.)
▪️ Nonchalantly toss treats near him, and away from you, on the floor. (If he doesn't take treats right away, delay this step. He's probably too scared to eat.)
▪️ Once he approaches you, don't be overly eager to pet him.
▪️Allow him to smell you and show you when he is comfortable enough for touch.
▪️When he seems ready, pet him on the chest, not on top of the head, for 5 seconds.
▪️See if he prods you to pet him again.

Ignoring an unfamiliar anxious dog is usually the fastest way to calm him and build trust. He may even decide he wants to be your friend. talkdoggy.com
