What show/ trial plans do you have coming up?
A few days late, but here’s our Thorntonfest and Hero Cup recap! Firstly…NO RAIN! That is a huge win this season 😂 Kite was absolutely *on* and we had one of our best days ever. First time we’ve made a top 10 cut at a big qualifier, and what shocked me was not just in open, but also in advanced toss and fetch! We ended up in 9th in open and 10th in toss and fetch, and I’m beyond thrilled. I threw my elbow out twice which definitely impacted my scores, but never did I think I’d make a cut in toss and fetch. Ever. Justin did his second freestyle with Spoon and while it wasn’t their best, I’m pretty sure they DID have the most fun on the field. Sunday came way too quickly, and we were all exhausted, but for long distance I hand the dogs off and just watch! Dani ended up running Spoon in Women’s Open, and Katherine ran Kite in women’s pro. The wind wasn’t their friend and the K’s finished a very respectable fifth, but the upset of the day was Dani and Spoon, snagging 3rd in a very competitive women’s open their first time playing together (and Spoons first ever distance event). We had an absolutely amazing time at Nebraska Disc Dogs Skyhoundz Discdogathon this weekend in Omaha. It was a hugely busy and FUN weekend! We had a great 4th place finish in freestyle against some truly amazing teams (and Justin’s freestyle debut!), 5th in Pairs DA, 8th and a personal best in Spot Landing, and decent placings in the other games (let’s not talk about time trial 🤣 I goofed!), then some time on sheep and cattle, ending with Kite doing her hip and elbow Ofa’s before heading home mid morning. Just got home, and definitely glad to stretch out and relax! Huge thanks to Andrew, Erin and Alycia for an amazing event, Tony Kelso for his lovely comments and help to Justin learning about judging (and judging freestyle!), Courtanie for photography that I can’t wait to see, and everyone else! And many many thanks to Jennafer for hospitality, stock, laughs and fun with the puppies as always. Ready for a few days break before AWI Qualifier @ Thorntonfest this weekend!

Yes, I’m totally late on an UPDIF post! I crashed hard afterwards - it was incredibly daunting physically especially with the weather, but it’s also the most fun I’ve ever had! Kite came home with 4 new PBs, and Spoon and Justin with one, and while we have a lot of room for improvement, I’m beyond proud of how we *all* handled everything and just had insane amounts of fun with the dogs. It was also a treat to see so many friends, new and old, and escape from the real world to a world of flying rubber chickens, lake far out, one subluxed elbow (ok that part sucked but hey it’s life), Wizard of Oz tent graveyards, and a whole lot of laughing. HUGE thanks to all the judges, competitors, UpDog, everyone, for making the best week of my life!

I’ll be the first to admit that I get frustrated often in our disc journey. Not with my dog, but with my body, and the fact I have to do so much differently, and the limitations that has. I see people moving effortlessly around the field, and I’m jealous. To feel that free with my body, I can barely even imagine anymore. And it’s ok to have those feelings, to acknowledge them - they’re valid. But what I can’t do is let that stop me. I can’t expect that I’ll have no limitations - everyone has them in one way or another - but find ways to showcase what we do have, which is an incredible trust and bond, creativity, innovation, and a lot of blood sweat and tears. Do I want to win? OF COURSE I do! I’m surrounded by absolutely world class players. At the end of the day, rolling off the field knowing we’ve given our absolute all, and that I get to go home with the best dang dog in the world, that’s my true win. (But I won’t turn down any other wins either that’s for sure!)

Wow. What a weekend. The Fly High Invitational 2024 was absolutely incredible! From biblical amounts of rain, to wind that puts the plains to shame, to being surrounded by some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met, I absolutely can not WAIT to go back. Icing on the cake? 3rd and a huge PB in open freestyle for Skyhoundz Discdogathon! Seeing old friends and new, and having the time of my life with this little dog. It takes a village some days, and I discovered a lot more people in my village for sure. Special shout out to Sam-e Marion for being the most incredible cheerleader, sneaky funny picture taker, and all around one of my favorite people ever to see, and it was a treat to meet Finn and family - what a truly amazing junior and family! So many other amazing people who I don’t have IG accounts for too. Donnette and Lindsay, thank you for welcoming me into your home, and into your hearts - I truly feel like I met two sisters from other misters, and Kite and I can’t wait to come back!

A long and eventful day, but Kite killed her first flight (and gave no cares about all the turbulence, which is a sight better than me 😂), and were settled and grabbing a couple hours of sleep before all the fun begins!

What what? NEW CHAMPION IN THE HOUSE! Had an amazing day at the American Sighthound Field Association trial with the Colorado Lure Coursing Association! Kite won the LCI Large division, which finished her LCI (lure course instinct title, 8 q’s) AND her Lure Coursing Championship (2 firsts over other dogs and accumulate 100 points)! I couldn’t be more proud of her! We’re all tired and happy, and looking forward to another day of racing tomorrow with hopefully equally amazing weather! Huge thanks to everyone for an amazing day.

Definitely been a long process adding the disc catch into her foot rebound - the timing is hard and I have virtually no depth perception, but we’re finally getting there!

What’s one of the small things you’ve trained your dog to do that is hugely useful? Training a send to mark is one of the handiest things Kite has learned, because it is so useful for training so many other behaviors. While Kite has known this for a long time, it’s nice to resolidify the basics, and show the steps we take!
