Originating from the warm terrains of Mexico, the poinsettia, or Euphorbia pulcherrima as it’s scientifically known, is steeped in fascinating lore. Legend has it that a poor Mexican girl named Pepita, having no gift to offer to the Christ child at the Christmas Eve services, was inspired to gather a humble bouquet of weeds. Miraculously, as she placed them by the manger, they blossomed into the brilliant red leaves we associate with the poinsettia today. This heartwarming tale, paired with the plant’s vibrant hue, solidified its connection with the Christmas season.
