The Why

"The bare facts behind the why in YardPup (YP): I set out to invent the highest quality, and most useful and versatile p**p scoop in the industry. A real “best of breed” product. I did not copy or improve on other products but rather came up with a totally new engineered solution based on my own needs as a dog parent and my own skills as a Mechanical Engineer and a creative problem solver. At the time I came up with YP, I was already an expert at bag attach methods from the learning curve I went through with the SnapBagger (a bigger, lawn and garden tool). With SnapBagger I developed my patented triangular design with “bungee in track” method of bag attachment. This was the only bag attach method out of at least 10 designs that I attempted in my prototypes that accomplished the 2 main goals: to have quick bag on and bag off change out, but once on, it had to stay on even with heavy loads and not slip off. There was a third benefit to my design but it was more of a “bonus” or gift that I hadn’t planned on, and it is that the triangular “pass thru” design allows you to use larger 13 gallon tall kitchen bags. My customers that have Great Danes or Mastiff’s absolutely love this feature that no other p**p scoop offers. So, I scaled down the Snapbagger, which uses large bags to create YardPup which will hold smaller grocery style bags.

The triangular bag holder is only half of the equation though, and a lot of design went into the pusher tool or the “paw” as I call it. The paw was designed so that it could handle debris from any surface and be effective in any climate (even snow and ice). It is a far cry from the small shrub rakes, with flexible tines, that the most common p**p scoops use. The Paw has stiff and rounded “fingers” rather than flexible tines. In my testing, the flexible tines “fling” or cut thru the debris when you try and use the corner of the tool to move small pieces out of hard to reach places. The stiff and rounded “fingers” of the paw create a perfect extension of your hand and when using the corner of this tool you can extract the smallest piece of debris out of mulch, pea gravel, etc. The paw has an angle to it so that on hard surfaces it can be used as a scraper. In snow and ice you can chip at the debris if you need too because the paw is constructed of steel. I designed it in steel because I wanted it to last a long time and the steel gives it added functionality. Unlike the grabber type p**p scoops there are no springs or any moving parts to speak of that can break over time. It is coated with a backed on epoxy enamel for added corrosion resistance. Most all other p**p scoops are either plastic or aluminum. There is one other metal p**p scoop but it is prohibitively heavy and cumbersome to use. The gauge of sheet metal that I chose for YP was a design balance between the considerations of weight and strength. It had to be strong enough to perform and last, but light enough for my #1 demographic which is women and older people.

The other key factor is that the YP can be used with regular plastic grocery-style handled bags that we all accumulate. When we talk about conservation they say “reduce, re-use, recycle”. This is a great re-use of these plastic bags. Additionally, a plastic grocery style bag is larger than the smaller single-use bags commonly sold with other p**p scoops. This means that you can use 1 bag for a couple of days before you tie it up and toss it out and so you are effectively throwing less plastic away. With my own pups, I used 1 bag on the YP for 3 or 4 days before it needed changing. It’s hard to describe in writing, but I would load the bag a little and then "fold it over on itself to seal it off" and lean it against the fence or wall. This worked perfectly.

I have been using this product myself for years, and can describe all the ways it has made my life easier. Feel free to ask me any questions!"
