Colorado Citizens for Canine Welfare

Colorado Citizens for Canine Welfare 1. Working to educate the public about puppy mills and how they sell their puppies through retail pet stores 2.
(1)

Helping guide people to available puppies/dogs through shelters/rescues or reputable breeders. 3CW's important initiatives all support our three-fold mission:
-Public Education
We increase awareness of the cruelty perpetuated by puppy mills and how to avoid unknowingly contributing to their financial gain.
-Guidance in Finding a Dog
We provide ethical alternatives for dog adoption through shelte

rs, rescues, and responsible breeders.
-Animal Welfare Advocacy
We participate in many events and initiatives that advocate for and spread the word about canine welfare locally and nationally. We research and provide data that supports these initiatives.

**I SLEPT UNDER A BRIDGE—BUT MY DOG KEPT ME WARM AND SANE**
People think you hit rock bottom when you lose your house. Or your job. Or your family.
But for me, it was when I realized I hadn’t heard my own name spoken in two weeks. Not once.
Except by him—my dog, Bixby. Well, not in words, obviously. But in the way he looked at me every morning like I still mattered. Like I was still *his* person, no matter what.
We’ve been through it all—eviction, shelters turning us away because of “no pets,” nights curled up in alleys with just a tarp and each other. He never bolted. Never stopped wagging that little crooked tail when I came back with even half a sandwich.
One time, I hadn’t eaten in two days. Someone tossed us a sausage biscuit from a car window. I split it right down the middle, but Bixby wouldn’t touch his half. Just pushed it toward me with his nose. Sat there staring like, “I can wait. You eat.”
That broke me.
I started writing the sign not to beg, but just to explain. Because people don’t always get it. They see the dirt, the beard, the worn-out hoodie. But they don’t see *him*. Or what he’s done for me.
And then last week—just as I was packing up to move spots—this woman in scrubs stopped in front of us. Said five words that didn’t feel real at first.

These are the only marks you should leave on your dog. 🐾💋 Remember: love, not punishment, is all they need. 🐶❤️

Life with a dog is a privilege and a commitment to love them for their life!♥️🐾🐾♥️

If you are going to have a dog, you are going to have to make sacrifices. You cannot expect to have an animal that was designed to live primarily outside and bring it into your house and not have to make changes or adjustments. A dog is not an ornament, a commodity or a display. A dog is an animal. You are sharing your life with another species. This is life with a dog.

Your yard will not be pristine. The grass will get burned from their p*e. Holes will be dug, bushes shredded, mud will come in the house. You cannot ask them to not p*e in your house and then also try to control even their outside bathroom. Please see how unfair this is. This is life with a dog.

You house will need management. Your counters will need to be clear. Shoes will need to be put away. Laundry room blocked. Kids toys picked up. Some things will get destroyed anyway. This is life with a dog.

They will bark at noises. They will protect their territory. Sometimes fiercely. They will not welcome strange people into the home easily even if you “know them” because this is in their genetic DNA. They don’t understand family gatherings and they don’t always see things the way we do. They won’t love playing with every dog they meet. This is life with a dog.

They will need enrichment and work and productivity. They will need training that is kind and fair and consistent and then maintenance to maintain that training. They will need guidance and coaching and lots of reinforcement to help them perform unnatural behaviors against their natural phenotypes. This is life with a dog.

They will mature and change and modify in their likes, behaviors and preferences as they age. Their behaviors aren’t guaranteed. They are not robots and they can be mercurial as they grow into their own personalities. They are allowed to change their mind and shift naturally just as we do. They need to be seen for what and who they are, not what and who YOU want. This is life with a dog.

Life with a dog is not a human right. It is a privilege and a responsibility and an education. They are animals and should be treated and expected to behave as such. That doesn’t make them any less loved or family members and it doesn’t make them any less deserving of respect, in fact it makes them more so.

Enjoy your life with a dog, and help them enjoy life with a human.

Please consider dimming or turning off your lights for bird migration.

Please consider dimming or turning off your lights for bird migration.

BIRD MIGRATIONS: Now detected on Doppler Radar with as many as 250,000,000 birds predicted to be in migration tonight across the United States from data via BirdCast. The annual bird migration has now reached the next level and is still a few weeks from the annual peak in May. Just like clockwork, the nocturnal migration is captured on Doppler Radar 30 to 60 minutes after sunset.

PLEASE HELP: Consider dimming or turning outdoor lights off as we head into peak bird migration season. Light pollution can disorient, confuse or disrupt normal bird migration patterns. It's little known by many that millions of birds are in migration overhead during the night!

Victory for dogs and cats: 500 US Localities have passed humane pet store laws - by Kitty Block - Humane World for Animals.

Our fight to end puppy mill cruelty has reached a milestone well worth celebrating: 500 localities across the U.S. have banned the sale of puppy mill puppies in pet shops.

We’re proud that the cities, towns and counties that have enacted humane pet store laws span 31 states and represent communities of all political leanings, demographic characteristics and population size. But we’re prouder still of the steady beat of progress in our campaign to shrink the puppy mill industry by limiting its retail opportunities. We’re sealing the deal with our public policy work, investigations and contributions to enforcement efforts, educational campaigns, litigation work and corporate outreach initiatives. From the board room to the courthouse, and from city councils to the U.S. Congress, where the Puppy Protection Act has just been reintroduced, we’re on the march, and we’re making a difference.

I adopted him not long ago. He doesn't know me that well yet, but he fell asleep like this, peacefully, resting his head on the gear shift like it’s the coziest pillow in the world. He’s tired—tired of fear, of waiting, of not being wanted. And now, for the first time in a long time, he sleeps without worry. He trusts me. That’s the most beautiful thing: when a broken soul decides to rest in your presence, knowing they’re safe now. Forever.

A nonprofit working to end puppymills

We aim to educate the dog-buying public, legislators, and the media about dog mistreatment at unethical dog producer operations and its connection to pet stores, internet puppy sales and “parking-lot” puppy sales. We aim to identify unethical dog producers and sellers in Colorado, research their inspection history and work with regulatory agencies such as PACFA and USDA to encourage strict and consistent enforcement of rules with clear progressive disciplinary steps to force compliance. Further we intend to encourage involvement of local law enforcement in urgent and/or criminal animal cruelty matters at licensed operations. We aim to create and support policies, rules and statutes that improve the welfare of dogs in dog producer operations. We will communicate with the general public, lawmakers, stakeholders and media to encourage these improvements.
