Did you know clownfish and anemones are the ultimate reef roomies?

Clownfish have evolved a symbiotic relationship with anemones, using their specialized mucous to stay safe from the anemone’s stinging tentacles. These tentacles provide the fish with a secure home from predators, while the clownfish return the favor by keeping the anemone clean and feeding on nearby plankton. Talk about teamwork! 🐠

🦅Valor came to Denver Zoo in 2018 from the Southeastern Raptor Center in Alabama after surviving a traumatic injury caused by shotgun pellets. While his injury limits him to short bursts of flight, he’s unable to be released back into the wild and has found a safe and supportive home behind the scenes with our Animal Ambassadors.

Bald eagles are federally protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which prohibits any action that disturbs or harms these iconic birds. Housing bald eagles requires special permits and significant regulations, and we are proud to provide Valor with the care and environment he needs to thrive.

Did you know? When Valor molts, we donate his feathers to the National Eagle Repository, a program that redistributes eagle feathers to Native American and Alaskan tribes for religious and cultural purposes. It’s an honor to support this important connection.

Join us in wishing Tundra, our beloved grizzly bear, a beary happy 23rd birthday! 🐻

Tundra came to the Zoo as an orphaned cub 23 years ago, and we’ve been honored to provide her with the best care ever since. From a dynamic habitat that lets her live out her natural behaviors to plenty of love and enrichment, she’s truly thriving.

This time of year, Tundra is spending most of her days in her den, catching up on beauty sleep. But don’t worry – she still wakes up for her favorite snacks.

We love you Tundra! ❤️

Happy Birthday, Groucho! 🎉🐘

The eldest member of our Endangered Asian elephant herd turned 55 earlier this year, and his team made sure to celebrate in style! Groucho enjoyed a special day filled with birthday enrichment, including a “cake” made of hay, bananas, apples, oranges and topped with an extra sweet treat for the day, marshmallow fluff.

Thanks to the exceptional care he receives at Toyota Elephant Passage, Groucho is thriving well beyond the average life expectancy for male Asian elephants. This milestone is a true testament to the dedication of our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine teams. Groucho continues to inspire us all with his wisdom, resilience, and grace, and as the incredible leader of our bachelor herd, he sets the tone for the younger bulls with his calm and patient demeanor.

We’re grateful for every moment with this amazing elephant and look forward to another year of health and happiness. Join us in wishing Groucho a very happy birthday! 🐘🎂

🐦✨ Happy National Bird Day! ✨🐦

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible role birds play in ecosystems around the world. At the Zoo, we’re proud to care for over 300 bird residents and to operate one of the largest Avian Propagation Centers in the country. This 14,000-square-foot facility is dedicated to breeding and protecting endangered and critically endangered bird species, advancing conservation efforts on a global scale.

Birds are more than just beautiful creatures—they’re essential to the planet’s health. From scavengers that clean up ecosystems to seed dispersers that help forests grow, and everything in between, birds contribute in countless ways. Protecting them means supporting the balance of entire ecosystems, benefiting wildlife and people alike.

You can find birds thriving across our Zoo, showcasing their diversity and importance. Every visit helps us continue our vital work to protect these amazing animals and the planet we all share.

🦨 Campbell, a year-and-a-half-old striped skunk, is making incredible progress in his harness training with the help of our Animal Ambassador team. This clever critter, who joined us from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, is learning to walk on a leash, giving him the choice to explore outdoor paths safely while enriching his day with new sights, smells, and sounds.

Harness training is a part of our commitment to providing our animals with choice, control, and plenty of enrichment. From learning the training basics of “station” and “target” to mastering his harness setup, Campbell’s training journey is a testament to his intelligence and adaptability.

🌟 Keep an eye out for Campbell on the Zoo paths this summer!

We had the pleasure of hosting Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II and his family for a special behind-the-scenes visit at the Zoo! During their visit, they met a few of our animals up close, heard about the specialized care they receive and learned more about our conservation efforts in Colorado and around the world. 🦒🦁

As the Broncos gear up for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, we’re wishing Pat and the entire team the best of luck! Go, Broncos! 🧡💙
