A very positive story pulled out of a possible fire.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Many of you have been following our recent post detailing the unsettling incident that occurred in our barn involving a heated water bucket. We have an update for you and it's good news.

Yesterday we received both a call and an email from Farm Innovators. They are the supplier of our bucket that melted and charred the wall of one of our stalls. They are also our vendor for the 15 other buckets that keep our rescued horses and donkeys hydrated when periods of harsh New England snow and below zero temperatures forces them to be inside our barn. We had planned to contact Farm Innovators regarding our issue but Farm Innovators beat us to the punch.

It was surprising (and refreshing) to see this family owned business—founded in 1983, developed by farmers and for farmers — take our scary experience so seriously and quickly reach out to help research , troubleshoot and hopefully correct this unforeseen circumstance. Not only did we have a lengthy discussion about their products (did you know that they are UL certified just like products from GE and Whirlpool?) but I also had the opportunity to learn about their testing procedures and dedication to safety - they test each product twice before they ship a unit and the product is double insulated around any live wiring for additional safety.

They then also asked our permission to reach out to Tomten Farm and Sanctuary's licensed electrician who had already been here to check our electric and make sure our fail-safes had worked properly (they had).

While they realize that there is no way to calm our fears 100%, they ARE going to send us new buckets for every stall. In addition, they are including thermostatically controlled outlets as an EXTRA safety measure (these thermo cubes sense ambient air temperature and not just water temperature). And beyond that, they have pledged to make a donation to the nonprofit that we dedicate our lives to here: Tomten Farm and Sanctuary.

To see this family business so committed to client satisfaction, safety and the animals is not only impressive but reassuring. It is a wonderful thing when a business stands by their product and tries to make it right.

To those who may be saying, "Well, that's nice but look what COULD have happened!!", we say this: The truth is that sometimes even the best products (of any kind) fail, even when used correctly. It is indeed unfortunate that this happened. We'll be first to admit it was definitely scary and have to look at that scarred result in our stall each day. But we are not the kind of organization who holds a grudge, makes it our mission to destroy others' businesses or exaggerates the consequences of an event. We understand nothing is perfect 100% of the time. Yes. This could have been catastrophic, but thankfully it was not and it is an opportunity to find even more ways to provide for and protect our Recues. We have used Farm Innovators' buckets, bowls, birdbath deicers and more for many years and thanks to their dedication and effort we still feel comfortable continuing to use them.

We understand that not everyone will agree with this decision. But leaving our senior animals without warm water during single digit and negative temperatures or expecting them to fight their way through ice to get to that water is just not the level of care we are comfortable providing. Without warm water our Rescues (many who are super seniors) are much more likely to suffer from impaction colic and we are simply not comfortable with that.

We take this incident very seriously and in addition to the new buckets and the thermo cubes, we are already looking into additional safety measures that we can take as we continue to strive to provide the top-notch care every life deserves and that Tomten has been known and respected for since 2014.

As we do so, we continue to be committed to sharing that information with you so we can all be more, do more and give more to the animals in our lives…confidently, ethically and safely.

I know my posts haven't been showing up on many feeds in the last few months due to something fishy with the Facebook algorithm, but if you were going to share ONE post of mine - this one is it.. because we have all seen horses in pain where the rider or owner may be unaware.

I know we have all seen it or experienced it: the swish of a tail under saddle.. the horse fussing with their head while being ridden.. a pinned ear, a little bit more "white of the eye" than we usually see.. a horse opening their mouth when working.. Those behaviors that make for a "less than fun" ride, and can be frustrating for the horse and rider.

So often, trainers, riders, and competitors chalk things like this up to "behavioral" issues - a training issue or attitude problem with the horse. But what if something else is going on - what if the horse is actually conveying that they are in pain? How would we know if the issue was discomfort or training?

Dr. Sue Dyson, vet researcher and developer of the "Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram," spoke with me on this week's podcast episode about what the pain ethogram is, how to use it for horses in our care, how to distinguish a potential discomfort/lameness versus a "behavioral" problem, and what we can do about it as equine professionals and riders.
