I’m a control freak…

So when Mostly Kiddo wants to “help” or just hang out in the microgreens room with me - I give him little projects to do so he feels included. He often elicits the help of an excavator or a monster truck. I have some old seeds that I let him go to down with. After getting his excavator all dirty we proceeded to use another tray for a car wash/bath.

These deeper trays are cheap so of course it broke and there was water everywhere! Thank goodness the floor is cement!

I’m Emily, the face behind Mostly Greens. Thanks for being here!

A few things you may or may not know about me:

≻ I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, I even have a tattoo
≻ I work full time as a client service rep at a veterinary clinic in Seattle
≻ Our team at Mostly Greens consist of moi, my husband, and our 4yo. We also elicit help from my sister when we have bulk orders!
≻ I cannot handle spicy food, I’m a huge wimp! As the years have gone on I’ve gotten better, but still overall a huge wimp
≻ I’m deathly afraid of moths, and most other flying things
≻ My biggest pet peeve is loud eating
≻ Coke is better than Pepsi, except when it comes to cherry - Wild Cherry Pepsi is far superior to Cherry Coke
≻ As someone who struggles with social anxiety (and anxiety and depression in general) most of my jobs have been customer facing jobs. Starbucks was the one that really pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me get to where I am today!

The Mostly Greens Family! 💚

We had a blast during our photoshoot with the amazingly wonderful Ana from . Well, she’s Ana to me - we go way back to our Starbucks days working together at the mall.

She’s one of those people that you pickup where you left off. We haven’t seen each other in years but we kept in touch via social media. I knew I wanted her to photograph us when we started this business and she crushed it!

Where it all begins - the seed!

Mostly Kiddo often helps me weigh out seeds and he loves planting his own as well!

This particular variety is Speckled Pea! They start out dark colored with speckles (hence the name) and after soaking they turn a lighter tan color.

Pictured is Rambo Radish on top of freshly cut rosemary and garlic bread, mayo, tomatoes, and everything but the bagel seasoning. Not only did this look good, but it tasted amazing!

How??

How on earth did I go from 25 to 25K followers in less than 90 days??

I created this account and made my first post on 1/30/22 and hit 25K on 4/24/22 🤯

Here’s what I did:

≻ Post a reel daily
≻ Post a combination of reels, static posts, carousels, and stories
≻ Focus on quality not quantity
≻ Stay true to myself
≻ But went out if my comfort zone at the same time
≻ Learned from other’s success - watching those that are doing well and try to do what they are doing

How to eat broccoli microgreens! 🥦🌱

I need variety in the food that I eat. Sure, I have some favorites and things that I eat frequently. But generally speaking I need to mix things up - especially when it comes to veggies! I get tired of eating them the same way.

If you’re like me and need variety, here’s some ideas for eating broccoli microgreens:

≫ On sandwiches, burgers,
tacos, and eggs

Welcome to all the new faces around here! 👋 I’m genuinely glad you’re here and hope we all get to know each other.

Thought it was a good time to share and how I got my start growing microgreens.

In the last couple years I started to get really into houseplants. And as one does, I started following a bunch of different plant related accounts! While scrolling through reels I came across an account that grew microgreens outside in a hoop house (green house). They kept popping up on Reels, so then I followed their account. Microgreens didn’t seem to far of a jump from houseplants so my research phase began. The more I researched the more I fell in love. Once I started growing I had already mentally jumped with both feet in!

Since planting my first trays January 17, 2022 (yes you read that right!) I’ve learned so much about myself, business, marketing, and I’ve gone out of my comfort zone. I’ve found my “thing” and life is so much sweeter.

✨10K✨ Is this even real?

We hit 5K followers sooner than I anticipated and then blew right passed it. Three days later we hit 10K. As I post this we’re over 13K. 🤯

Honestly, I’m not really sure how it happened, but I’ll tell ya what I did because something obviously worked.

Here’s what I did:
⋆ Posted every day
⋆ Post a reel daily (or at least I tried)
⋆ Post a combo of static posts, reels and carousels
⋆ Engage with other accounts
⋆ Stay true to who I am
⋆ Go out of my comfort zone a bit (i.e. posting reels with myself as the main focus)

We went to our first market yesterday! 🎉

It was the Eco Market at the put on by . Instead of our normal compostable packaging we went the jar route to be even more eco-friendly.

I learned a lot about setting up our displays, how to talk to customers about microgreens, and what we could improve on. Excited for doing another one!

But the best part was meeting Laura from in person!!! 🤩 She’s the person who got me first interested in microgreens and has become a mentor and friend. The microgreens course that she teaches (and that I took) opens up April 11th!

Technically this is our second bulk order for but it’s the one that had a delivery date first! 200 containers of broccoli - which is 300oz!

This order is for and their Chicken Soup Brigade which “provides food and nutrition services to improve the health of individuals living with serious illnesses such as cancer, kidney disease, HIV, and other diet-related chronic health conditions.” We’re so honored to be a part of such an amazing program!

Very excited to be trying out some LOCAL seeds from !

During my recent saga with delayed seeds I went on a frantic search for seed companies near me. I found a couple and have ordered small quantities to try.

Seattle Seed Co. is located on Whidbey Island - which is located about 1.5hrs away from me, and includes a ferry ride! I grew up going to summer camp on Whidbey and absolutely love that whole island.

Yellow in a blanket of green. I love when I get the occasionally yellow, and sometimes white, sunflower shoot.

Google hasn’t yielded a quick answer to what causes this. So I’ll take it as a sign to remember to stand out!

Radish Trials!

I needed to order some more radish seeds so I thought it would be the perfect time to try some new varieties.

Last round I grew China Rose and this time trying out Rambo & Triton! Here are some of my observations:

Rambo - love the colors, fast to germinate and germinated well despite a couple dry spots on the tray.

Triton - slower to germinate and didn’t germinate as well. Maybe the soil got too dry? You can see from their photos on day 4 that the edges are looking dry.

Our first bulk order! 🙌 We are so proud to join forces with & to bring fresh, local, nutritious, and delicious greens to preschool families in Seattle!

Since we haven’t ordered our labels in bulk yet we decided to get some specifically for this order. We’ll be growing A LOT of sunflower to fulfill this order. Seeds arrive in a couple days and we’ll be planting this weekend! Stay tuned to see us scale up drastically.

Pea Shoots taste just like a sugar snap pea and are so beautiful with their little tendrils.

Their crisp sweetness makes them so versatile! You can add them to a salad, chop them up in a slaw, top your eggs or sandwich, put them into a pesto or smoothie, and even lightly sauté with a little soy sauce and garlic.

Arugula is my “problem child” but I’m not ready to let it go. While it is very popular it is my lowest yield and the most sensitive. Here are some ways to to help with your arugula grows: > be very careful not to over water when planting > germinate for 2-3 days max > no covered blackout period (I do a hybrid blackout) > less is more when it comes to watering > harvest when it’s looking it’s best because it’ll turn quickly. Ever look back and realize you didn’t know you needed more?When I first came across the idea of growing microgreens I had unknowingly been feeling uninspired, stagnant, and like I needed to mix it up. I wasn’t unhappy, I just didn’t know I needed something new to light a fire in me. The universe (and Instagram) knew before I did that I needed a new hobby. I had recently gotten into houseplants, and if you are like me you know that indoor plants can be a very (VERY) expensive hobby with no return on investment. In comes Laura from @handgrowngreens - my soon to be mentor (of sorts). She kept popping up on my Reels and so I started following. I thought, maybe I too could grow microgreens? And maybe I could have a little side business? So naturally I started learning and watching tutorials and reading ‘how to’ guides. I tend to jump in with both feet, as they say, and go all in. It’s been just over 5 months since I planted my first trays. July will be our biggest month yet and we’ll be bringing in almost $3K! Here’s everything you need to know about seeding microgreens: ≻ start with fluffy soil, I sift mine ≻ press your soil to get it flat and even ≻ I work in stages, prep all the trays with soil first ≻ slightly water before seeding ≻ after pre weighing your seed, use a spice shaker to seed evenly (link in my bio for the exact one I use!) ≻ thoroughly “water in” ≻ stack 6 high and then add some weight ≻ and now you wait 2-4 days depending on your germination room conditions! I have a confession to make…I don’t have it all together. I struggle with self doubt, impostor syndrome, and anxiety. I’ve talked about it before and I’ll keep talking about it. When I figured out that I had anxiety I was in college. I was probably 20-21 yo. And then looking back I realized I had anxiety my entire life. If this was something people talked about more back then, maybe I would have figured it out sooner? If you think you might struggle with anxiety, or if you know you do, you can always reach out! Gaining 25K followers is 3 months I constantly feel like I don’t deserve it. I feel like it was “just luck” and “nothing I did”. Which, may be partially true, but I do need to remind myself that I do deserve this. The self doubt rolls right info impostor syndrome, but I do feel that it’s a separate thing that everyone deals with. Which makes it that much more important to talk about and to build each other up. Seed soaking tools! You’re gonna want to save this if you’re new to microgreens. My favorite two tools for soaking seeds: 1. Mesh painters bags -> machine washable -> allow for soaking of large quantities -> easy to rinse and drain 2. Bucket to soak in! -> I like the 2 gallon size -> big enough to soak large quantities but not too heavy once filled. Both of these things can be found in the Amazon Supply List link in my bio. Sifting Soil A S M R ✨ Why sift soil? 1. I buy compressed bales of soil and sitting breaks up all the chunks 2. It keeps out big clumps of moss and any sticks, twigs, or bark 3. Microgreens grow best in light and fluffy soil 4. Plus it’s SO SATISFYING! Mostly Hubs made my sifter out of reclaimed wood and metal mesh from the hardware store. The soil I use is ProMix HP with Mycorrhizae @promixgardening I get it from a local hydroponics store. I absolutely love ASMR videos, what about you? Should I do more? Sunflower provides such a plentiful harvest! 🌻 It’s more labor intensive to grow (blast those darn seed hulls!) but it’s so rewarding. Lesson learned - don’t spray the top of sunflower the day before harvest! Thankfully I was okay to wait an extra day before harvesting. I harvest my microgreens at the perfect maturity and ensure they are dry! This allows them to have the best taste and last the longest. It’s a good reminder that while this life seems long, we can’t get time back. This audio really spoke to me and I wanted to share with you all 💚 I didn’t love the soil that I purchased…too many twigs and really clumpy. I was inspired by @stevestonmicrogreens to sift my soil. I enlisted Mostly Hubs to make me a sifter and it was therapeutic sifting it all. I am pleased with the results! The soil is all fluffy and much less “twiggy”. This is my first time growing sunflower, pea, radish, and arugula - I’m still amazed at how amazing they look! Today is only day 9 or 10 for some of these. Wow, just wow! Just take the next step. Don’t get caught up in what is overwhelming you, simply take the next little step rather than getting caught up in the scary end goal that doesn’t seem attainable.
