In veterinary school, a billion years ago, I got to see a couple of these bad boys alive and squirming. (A veterinarian a couple of hours away discovered them, also during a "routine" spay procedure, and transported them to the new veterinary school to add to their collection of preserved specimens.) These little nasties really do reach 3 feet in length and are the diameter of your finger.

I have been watching articles the past 2-3 years about the worldwide spread of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus which killed 82 MILLION chickens in the US last year alone and countless wild birds. The fear is that this deadly virus would jump to mammals, which it has... killing 70% of the elephant seal calves born in 2023 (over 17,000 found dead on Argentine beaches). It has now been detected in dairy cattle and a man in Texas. If this adapts one more step to human to human transmission, Covid will look like the sniffles in comparison.

My newest foster pup is a "Jackapoo" named Archie. He is 11 weeks old, weighs less than a bag of sugar and is twice as sweet. Applications are being accepted by Phyllis.

An interesting story. If you are considering genetic testing, please get the health panel and not just the breeds. The most accurate tests are done Embark and Wisdom. For a full health screen, expect to pay around $150.

Darla the Australian shepherd appeared to be female, but genetic testing revealed she had a mix of male and female parts.

Valley Creek here in the Great Valley is the worst! 😲 To think of the times I took Pepper for a special walk and a fun swim in the creek. (First thing she does is to take a long drink.) I think I will be sticking to the Schuylkill River in Phoenixville near the Lock 60 Recreation Area as my go to place.
