3 months away from the 2024 deer season!!!!

The top photo was a track that I ran Boone on in Hillsdale county. This particular track was a nightmare situation. Normally you would want to be the first one on the scene so you can have a clean line from the hit site to the target deer. The hunter was honest with us and even showed us the areas that have been grid searched on his OnX hunt map and showed us where the previous tracking dog had went. I went into this track optimistic, hoping we could at least advance the track from last blood. For those of you that are not familiar with tracking dogs, when the area is grid searched the scent is spread everywhere and if another dog has been there before it becomes a race to the prize and younger dogs like mine will miss things. Normally I do not do restarts with Boone but I will if another dog has ran the track before us or if its been heavily grid searched. The third run was the charm on this track. I watched Boone struggle hard doing circles every 30 to 40 yards, trying to figure out what happened. Finally he broke off from the area that had been heavily grid searched. I could tell that he was onto something because of the way he was acting and sure enough a few hundred yards later there was the buck.

The bottom photo is a track that I did in Ingham county with Crockett. This was a very easy track for him. Quartering away shot didn’t allow the arrow to pass through, which left very little blood to trail. Crockett made quick work of it and found the buck in about 10 minutes.

Just over 3 months away from the 2024 archery opener!! I know that a lot of people are filling crop damage permits this time of year, I would love to have the opportunity to come out and run the dogs. Regardless if it’s a super easy one or not, nothing beats the real thing for training purposes.

The pic on the left was one of my favorite track’s I’ve ever done with Boone. The combination of a locked on baying bloodhound and a recurve bow made for an interesting afternoon.

The pic on the right was a pretty interesting one too, Crockett tracked this buck about 400 yards with only a few specs of blood along the way. We ended up by a pond where we got stuck in a thick area where the deer had bedded down several times. It took Crockett a while to work out of that scent pool, but eventually he ended up taking us across the road where we found another bed where the buck had laid down. I seen a set of fresh tire tracks and drag marks in the grass where it looked like someone had grabbed the deer leading right to the garage. The hunter went door knocking and the person who took the buck ended up giving it back.

The red devil dog is growing quick, we need this weather to cool down so we can get back to training 🥵.

4 months until the 2024 archery opener!!! 🦌🏹

Both of these tracks were ran in mid October last season and are both really similar. Both bucks were liver shots and both hunters allowed the bucks to lay over night, which made for 2 quick tracks. We have tracked and recovered liver shot deer that have traveled 1/2 a mile when they’re pushed by the hunter or coyotes, but usually they only go around 300 yards towards the nearest body of water.

And if that ain’t it… 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

You’ve gotta set’em up to win. Let them have some successes whether it’s target game or not. So many do not understand this concept either …

We’re counting the days for the 2024 deer season opener!!! Every week as deer season approaches I wanna share some of our recovery’s from the 2023 season and some of the things I’ve learned as a tracker.

The picture on the left is a track that I did with my dog Crockett, this is the only buck that I’ve ever recovered that was hit in the shoulder with 3 inches of pe*******on. Blood was decent in the beginning of the track and slowly went to specks. We jumped the buck about 500 yards into the track and the arrow was still lodged in him, the buck took off like a bat outta hell and finally broke the arrow off. The blood trail then picked up and we continued the track. We finally found the buck after getting permission from the the neighbor to continue the track onto his land. This deer had traveled just over a mile from the initial hit site. I feel that the hunter nicked the artery in the shoulder and it was severed when we jumped the buck. Crockett was on it from the start, tracking slow and quiet, but once we jumped the buck he was a baying maniac until the end.

The track on the right was done with my dog Boone in the beginning of archery season. This was a liver shot buck that was tracked the night before with no luck. I trust Boone now more than ever but it was a build of times like this that gained that trust. Zero blood the whole track, I truly belive Boone skipped the actual path the deer went because he smelt the deer by the time we were on the edge of the corn field. Watching his body language was super cool, he would run a little bit and start sticking his nose in the air and kept doing that until we found the buck.

Our track pack spent the holiday weekend enjoying all the best things, while certainly not now or ever forgetting the sacrifices made for us to do so. 🇺🇸

To all those who served- Thank you.

Meet Rip, the last dog that will live in this house for several years or will swan dive off this roof lol. Kayle showed up with him unexpectedly last week, she better get her tracking gear ready 😉.

This is the 4th time I’ve tried running both dogs together on the same line off lead, they did do a lot better this time but it seems to turn into a race to the prize vs slowly working the trail. The biggest thing that I’ve been struggling with is them fighting at the end for the prize, if they’re fighting over a piece of a deer hide imagine how hard it will be to control them when it’s an actual Deer at the end of the trail. My goal has always been to be able to run 3 hounds off lead on the same track and be able to fully control all 3.

Any time I get into a tough terrain tracking are Boone will start doing circles starting small and progressively getting bigger until he takes the line. It’s fun learning your dogs and I feel will definitely pay off next season. We jumped 2 bedded deer heading into this marsh and he still chose to stay on the line.

After we finish practice tracks, we go and check for mushrooms.

Set a couple practice tracks for the boys today that I’m planning to run them on right at the 24hr mark. Theres a few things that I try to do to make these tracks challenging for them.
Heavily deer populated areas Terrain changes Age/length of track Varying weather conditions Creating scent pools
