Recently I had a client bring me a six year old gelding. I was told he will buck and buck hard, he’s staggy,bad with his feet, full of himself,and just all around hard to handle. I was told the whole truth,which I appreciate. That being said, when I really got to working his feet around in the round pen and trying to engage his brain it kept coming to me that most of that behavior doesn’t really belong to him. He has a big soft eye , has a ton of feel and softness,and when he is confident and trusts me with what’s going on, will absolutely melt to me. I kept thinking about how him being a stag (he was cryptorchid and had surgery) and having been “broke” rather than started might have been the cause of a lot of his reactive and over reactive outbursts. He probably feels like he’s never had a friend in this world. He’s going to be a little challenging for sure, but I think all we need sometimes is a friend who believes in us.
