Brief Beaker update! ❤️

So Beaker spent about 96 hours on IV fluids before we rechecked his bloodwork, and we are absolutely astonished at how improved his kidney values are! Truthfully, if I did not run both samples on Friday and Tuesday myself directly after collecting them, I would think somehow some tubes got mixed up. That’s how much they have improved!

We do not know if the improvement is permanent or not, but a few hours after rechecking his bloodwork on Tuesday, we stopped his IV fluids and transitioned him to twice daily subcutaneous fluids. Beaker had been handling these like a champ! He is still receiving anti-nausea and pain medications as well as an appetite stimulant and a phosphate binder. His appetite is not as good as we would like, but it has been improving.

Tomorrow he will have more bloodwork rechecked to determine how he is doing since stopping his IV fluids. We hope to have good news then! ❤️

As of right now, his care is totaling ~$1100 and is expected to continue to rise. If you’d like to help out with his care, we would appreciate any and all donations and shares!

Beaker update! 💕🐱

The last 3 days have been… eventful, to say the least. After learning that Beaker had been stuck in a tree initially, we were expecting some abnormalities on his labwork. The results were definitely not great, but all could have been from dehydration/malnutrition, and we were hopeful that was it. His vet started him on subcutaneous fluids that his foster started on Wednesday evening, the day after he came into the rescue. The plan was to continue fluids under the skin and let him get hydrated and fed again, then recheck labwork in 2-4 weeks.

Unfortunately, it became obvious over the next 36 hours that he was much sicker than we initially thought. Friday, we had him rechecked and he had lost most than half a pound. He was not eating, and he had started vomiting. There were times over the day where we were concerned he would not make it.

Repeat bloodwork was performed, and it was found that his kidney values had worsened dramatically. So much so, some of the values could not be read by the lab machine in the hospital. A brief ultrasound was performed of his kidneys and other organs, and we found that he has a renal infarct. This basically means that his body sent a blood clot through his kidneys, and this caused a part of the tissue in one of his kidneys to die. He also has pancreatitis.

We started aggressive supportive care for him, including IV fluids round the clock with higher doses during the day when we’re at the hospital. He is on a pain medication, an appetite stimulant, injectable nausea meds, and a phosphate binder. If he did not start eating after 24 hours, we planned to place a feeding tube. He spent one night in a hospital kennel in our bathroom, and now he’s set up in our side room.

Friday, he looked really scary. Saturday, he was perking up and nibbling some treats, so we did not place a feeding tube. Today, he is SO much brighter and has started eating!

We will be posting a fundraiser for him soon, as his care is expected to be $1200-1500, but for now, here are some pics from the past 3 days.

We’ve got some nice adoption updates to share over the next few days!

First, we’ll start with the dynamic duo of Sushi and Sashimi! These amazing kittens were adopted together (by a close friend of a previous LCR adopter, actually!). They are already doing wonderfully in their new home, sweet and affectionate with their new family, playful and adventurous.

We couldn’t be happier for them! Here are some pictures of them in their new home. 🥰

So… if you didn’t already know, I’m kind of a sucker for a cat in need. And when I saw a cat in need, I couldn’t help but reach out, because the person who found him wanted to help him. And I love helping people help cats.

So with that said… Meet Beaker, the adorable and slightly cross-eyed orange boy we took in today. ❤️

He is estimated to be a few years old, and he is currently skin and bones, weighing in at only 5.5 pounds. The last two pictures show how thin he is, poor boy. We submitted a full diagnostic panel to the lab for him and will get most of the results tomorrow to see if there is a reason he is so skinny, or if it is hopefully because he was outside (and stuck in a tree!) for however long he was. We also have calls in to local animal control officers to see if he has been reported missing by anyone.

Despite being in such rough shape, he is SUCH a sweet boy! He is a lovebug who is constantly purring, rubbing on you for attention, and flopping onto his back in front of you (sometimes using your leg to really get that dramatic flop going!). He is in a temporary foster home while we figure out exactly where he’ll end up in foster care pending his labwork results, but these pictures are from his short stop at our house to pick up supplies for his foster home. He settles in very quickly!

We’re hoping for the best for his labwork results. ❤️

I can’t believe I never shared this video! This is the fun part of working with me - sometimes I bring kittens to work, and sometimes my coworkers socialize them to new things, like “cat tv!”

It’s been a bit since I updated on the new group of five kittens from two litters I worked for a few days to catch (and will be getting back to working on the adults soon), but I wanted to post a few cute kitten cuddle puddle pictures from when they were at work recently and give a quick update on these cuties.

First update is, they do have names! Biscotti and Amaretti are the two older kittens, and Cannoli, Zeppole, and Tiramisu are the three younger kittens. Amaretti is the only girl among the five of them, which is lucky for us when it comes time to spay and neuter them, as it’s easier to get boys on the schedule. So thank you, little ones!

The next update is, the reason I don’t have any great pictures of them yet is that they’re still in our quarantine space away from our main foster room as they have been battling some terrible upper respiratory infections. All five have been on antibiotics twice a day, and depending on who is having eye symptoms, Biscotti with the terrible eye on intake and the others have all been getting eye drops two to three times a day.

Last week, little Tiramisu seemed so suddenly worse that we had to take a radiograph to make sure he was not developing pneumonia. Kittens can become so dangerously sick so quickly, so we couldn’t wait to see if he improved on a higher dose of antibiotics first.

Despite being so sick, they’re overall in good spirits! Especially little Tiramisu and Cannoli, they are really brightening up and showing interest in adventuring out of their quarantine kennel to explore the room. We’re hopeful that they’re all finally turning the corner!

When we take on kittens, we always know they’re going to be expensive to care for, but when they’re sick, they’re even more expensive. If you want to help with their care, we greatly appreciate any and all donations to help with their vet bills and supplies!

Oh snap, I’m a few weeks late on an adoption announcement again—but the great news is that Sweet Potato Casserole (Sweet P) and Honey-Glazed Ham (Ham) are finally settling in to their new home well! Not only do they have each other, they also have an older cat whose name fits with theirs and a new loving family. We’re so excited for them! 🥰

The new babies from the co-litter of 5 we recently caught are doing well! They’re starting to be more social with us and less fearful, and though they’re not 100% healthy yet, with treatment they have all improved and are continuing to do so.

My heart hurts to post this. Though he seemed to do okay overnight into the early hours of the day, this morning we lost little Pigeon. 💔

This photo is him at 5:30 this morning, seeming comfortable and full, resting on my fingers where he held on with his tiny paws. Just two hours later, his breathing had changed dramatically and while I was rushing him to the hospital to get oxygen support, he passed on the way. He was premature and had a rough start in life, and it is highly likely that his lungs were not strong enough. Without a suckle reflex and so premature, he surely would not have survived outside.

My heart is broken, despite knowing there was a chance this could happen. I try to remind myself that he may have only been with me a short time, but he was loved, warm, and fed while he was with me, and that matters. He mattered, and we gave him a fighting chance by tube feeding him throughout the night. He was loved.

I have a rule that if a cat passes with the rescue, then they become an official part of the family, our family. They join my beloved personal pets after cremation, and I cherish all memorials of them. So, though it was short and in a heart-breaking way, welcome to our family, Pigeon. 💔

I am working hard to catch his mom, spending my evenings after work there trying. She has something neurologically wrong with her, but I do not know yet how bad or if it has been the cause of now two litters who have passed. We are going to get her spayed as soon as possible, and she has a place to live indoors lined up. We will get her, though I’m so sad we couldn’t get her before she gave birth to little Pigeon.

Thank you all for the well wishes and thoughts of hope. 💕 And thank you to my amazing work family who supported me today through losing him before work. It warms my heart to know he had so many people rooting for him. He couldn’t have asked for a better try after his start at life.

Two days of patience and trying different bait and trap set ups, sporting a new sunburn and an arm that has been shredded by blackberry bushes…. I got the last little baby! I’m so excited over it, you all get a picture of my face even. 😂

Here are some photos of him immediately after capture today, and a group photo of the others from this morning who are already doing SO well since I caught them 3 days ago. He’s been put back with his brothers and sister, and we’ll start making our plan to get the adults next!

Anyone who knows me knows that this is my kind of weather. While some other people are complaining about the heat, I thrive in anything over 78 degrees! So, what did I do on Tuesday after work?

Well, I spent hours trying to trap 5 kittens an hour away from home until 9:30pm, and was successful with 4! I was recently contacted after an animal-loving kind woman passed, and the cats outside she cared for were left with a lot of confusion and new family members coming to take care of them. While some of the young adults are feral, we are hoping some will socialize, but priority was given that night to trying to catch the kittens. They’re the most vulnerable out there, and multiple of them have eye discharge and signs of illness that could be fatal if not given proper care at their young age. The four kittens we caught are from two different litters, two estimated to be six weeks and two estimated to be eight weeks. Their moms, as well as a few other females, are looking very pregnant again.

Now it’s my day off and I’m camped out again, hoping for the last kitten. 🤞 Then we’ll work on trapping the females and doing what we can with them, and finally the males as space allows. If any of the adults (6-12 months most of them, according to the caretaker’s family) socialize, we may be looking for fosters for them.

With the kittens being sick and about a dozen or more adults to work on, some very pregnant and some likely not able to be socialized, this is a HUGE project. If you want to help out, we would greatly appreciate any shares and donations—even a few dollars helps!
