Sales Policy and Pricing!

These images were created for MAES Farmer’s Market so they don't include everything we offer, just what we plan on bringing to the market. Pricing is subject to change, but that being said these aren't augmented for the market. If you are coming to the market and are looking for something specific, send us a message and we would be happy to transport adults for pickup at the market.

We will also have hatching eggs available at the market. Prices will be handwritten on the cartons.

Discover the unique TAMUK Composite Rabbit, a breed expertly crafted for backyard meat production and designed by Dr. Lukefahr about 30 years ago. This breed stands out due to its hybrid vigor, enhancing steady production and reproductive traits like fertility, litter size, and milk production. Initially created from a blend of seven diverse breeds—New Zealand Red, Siamese Satin, Californian, New Zealand White, Dutch, Champagne d’Argent, Harlequin, and Havana—the TAMUK Composite boasts a genetic cocktail that supports a spectrum of coat colors. From agouti and black to lilac and red, these rabbits not only add color variety to your homestead but also offer the potential for selling naturally colored pelts at markets.

Key features of the TAMUK Composite include large ears with thin fur to aid in heat dissipation, a large, convex skull shape to facilitate more effective oxygen intake, and a slight mandolin or commercial body type, all contributing to their exceptional heat tolerance. This makes them perfect for regions prone to hot climates. The integration with the TAMUK line of New Zealand Whites has further boosted this breed's performance, particularly in traits crucial for effective meat production.

Ideal for small-scale backyard operations, this breed provides a fascinating way to involve family members, especially children, thanks to its intriguing variety of colors and educational value.

The TAMUK Composite Rabbit exemplifies sustainable and practical livestock farming, providing a valuable resource for both small family farms and larger commercial operations looking to enhance their productivity under challenging environmental conditions.

RIP to our very first duck, Pinky. ❤️

Somehow she didn't make it into the coop (I expect to find a nest hidden somewhere) and got got by some sort of large mammal in a camera blindspot. It hit us very hard because she was the OG favorite but she wasn't the first and won't be the last. Such is life on a farm. 😣 Friendly reminder that animals should be secured overnight!

In the heart of our urban homestead, roosters are more than the morning's herald; they are integral to the vitality of our permaculture ecosystem. 🌱🐓 They get a bad rap because of their crow, but we are definitely pro-rooster. Here's why keeping a rooster can be essential to urban farmers:

1. Flock Harmony: Roosters are the guardians of the coop, ensuring peace and order among the hens and young chickens. Their presence alone can enhance the social structure and well-being of the entire flock.

2. Sustainable Breeding: With a rooster in the mix, we're able to naturally expand our flock, fostering a self-sufficient homestead.

3. Natural Pest Control: Our rooster is on pest patrol, foraging for insects and grubs, keeping our garden thriving without the need for harmful chemicals.

4. Vigilant Protectors: Always alert, roosters act as an early warning system against potential threats, they have been known to sacrifice themselves for their ladies if it comes to it.

5. Instinctive Leaders: They encourage hens to forage and feed safely, maintaining the natural balance and health of our chickens as they roam the homestead.

6. A Touch of Tradition: Beyond their utility, roosters bring aesthetic and cultural richness to our urban oasis, connecting us to an agricultural legacy.

7. Living Lessons: As part of our educational outreach, roosters help illustrate the full spectrum of chicken behavior and life cycles to learners of all ages.

Feather-picking in Muscovy ducklings can be a natural but concerning phase of their development. Here's a quick guide to managing this behavior.

🦆 Understanding the Behavior: Juvenile ducks may sometimes exhibit feather-picking, which is usually a temporary phase. While it can indicate issues such as nutritional gaps or environmental stress, it isn't always a sign of a serious problem.

🌾 Nutrition Matters: Make sure their diet is rich in proteins and essential nutrients to support healthy feather growth. Simple dietary adjustments often make a big difference.

🏞️ Space to Thrive: Overcrowding can lead to stress. Ensuring ample space for each duck helps reduce the risk of feather-picking due to stress.

🎯 Engage and Enrich: Ducks thrive with stimulation. Provide pools (when age-appropriate), perches, and toys to keep them engaged and deter feather-picking out of boredom.

🐛 Stay Parasite-Free: Regular health checks for parasites are important. Treat any infestations promptly to prevent discomfort that could cause feather-picking.

🔍 Monitor and Respond: Keep a close eye on your flock. If necessary, separate ducks that continue the behavior or are being singled out despite other measures.

For new keepers, it's important to remember that with careful observation and management, this behavior can be managed without long-term impacts on your ducks. It has been a common occurrence in our flock but it ceases once they have grown in their wing feathers (which have always feathered in perfectly).

This year we will begin offering TAMUK-Composite rabbits! I have fallen in love with raising rabbits over the last year and after some false starts found that the TAMUKs are the perfect fit. They are a commercial sized meat rabbit that is well known for its heat tolerance. A must for anyone looking to be able to provide meat for their family year round. They come in a cornucopia of colors and have the sweetest personalities. Big thanks to Cofield Farms for getting me started with them and to RoseOak Ranch in Texas for helping me take it to the next level! Shout out to my rabbit mentor Whitney for helping me stay sane ❤️

Starting a flock is hard. We have our breed project, but one of my favorites is our nankin breed. We keep them pure, separated by comb type and that involves two coops itself. The Nankin breed is one of the rarest breeds around and also one of the oldest, surviving at least 500 years through famines despite being not much bigger than a Serama. They have what I like to call "big chicken energy," they will boss around any chicken in the yard. I love using them to teach young pullets and cockerels. They are the most hardcore broodies. I will be taking these guys (and possibly their babies) to shows in the fall/winter, they aren't perfect but the more people that meet them, the more will fall in love with them.

If anyone wants any info on them, let me know!
