Our friend Luna recently visited us as she was experiencing acute vomiting, inappetence, and severe lethargy. An abdominal radiograph (x-ray) revealed a mechanical foreign body obstruction. Luna had ingested a black foam piece from an exercise mat, which could have caused serious health issues if left untreated. Thankfully, with prompt medical attention, we were able to remove the foam safely. Luna is now recovering well and will be back to her playful self soon. This serves as an important reminder to keep small objects out of reach of our curious pets. 🐱❤️

Polar Bear came in for a grooming session but was also experiencing some health issues like loss of appetite and vomiting. Our team went above and beyond by conducting an ultrasound, bloodwork, and X-rays during his visit. We also noticed and treated his eyelid hairs (distichia) that were irritating his eye. We're so glad we could provide comprehensive care all in one visit! 🐱💙

Emergencies often require a team effort, and today was no exception. Toby came to us in respiratory distress due to pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs). Our dedicated doctors performed a chest tap, successfully removing nearly a liter of fluid. This procedure brought Toby significant relief, and our team is now working on a treatment plan to ensure his continued comfort. 🐾

Our specialists Dr. Melissa Hobday and Dr. Melissa Java, who have been collaborating for years, bring extensive expertise and experience to the field. Their joint efforts have significantly enhanced the diagnostics and treatment of pets. In this video, they coordinated a sedated airway exam, chest X-rays, and an endotracheal wash to obtain a fluid sample from the lungs of Arlo, a cat who was diagnosed with feline asthma and concurrent bronchopneumonia.

On a Friday afternoon, our team responded to an emergency involving a canine patient with a severe de-gloving injury sustained from a vehicular accident. Dr. Tsui initially stabilized the dog upon arrival, and after thorough evaluation, it was determined that amputation was the most appropriate treatment to ensure the dog's health and quality of life. Our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Hobday, performed the leg amputation. Dog leg amputations, while significant, often result in excellent outcomes, allowing pets to live pain-free and adapt remarkably well to their new circumstances. We are pleased to report that during a follow-up visit, the dog is recovering exceptionally well and adapting admirably as a tri-pod! 🐾💗

Chester's owner brought him in to be diagnosed after he began throwing up nearly every morning when he woke up. After a thorough exam including an ultrasound with Dr. Simpler, Chester was diagnosed with feline inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

IBD is a condition in which a cat’s gastrointestinal tract becomes chronically irritated and inflamed. Inflammatory cells infiltrate the walls of the GI tract, thickening them and disrupting the ability of the GI tract to properly digest and absorb food.

Common signs of feline IBD include vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea with or without bloody stools, and lethargy. These signs can vary in severity and frequency.

Making a diagnosis of feline IBD requires an extensive workup because many of the signs of IBD are commonly seen with other diseases.

IBD can often be controlled so that affected cats are healthy and comfortable. However, even with proper management, symptoms may come and go. Keeping the disease in check requires strict compliance with dietary and medical therapies. Monitoring by the veterinarian and owner is critical so that relapses can be assessed and the dosing of long-term medications can be adjusted.

Chester now has a personalized treatment plan and the support he needs to manage his IBD.

Miss Kitty is an acupuncture queen! This sweet girl has received acupuncture from Dr. Joanna Murray for a variety of conditions including upper respiratory and digestion issues.

During this acupuncture session, Dr. Murray is treating Miss Kitty for her chronic back pain. This good natured cat has visible back twitches and sensitivity. Before beginning the treatment, she would self-sooth by chewing on her paws and areas of her back until the fur was gone. Since her acupuncture sessions began, her back twitches have decreased and the fur has begun to regrow on her paws and back.

When acupuncture is performed on a patient, the doctor inserts very tiny, sterile needles along acupuncture channels. Acupuncture points are located at anatomic sites rich in nerves, blood vessels and lymphatics. Needling in these spots can elicit the release of pain relieving substances, decrease the release of pain-inducing substances such as inflammatory cytokines, and stimulate the nerves to aid in nerve signal transmission.

This process results in local and systemic changes in the body that can help with pain, inflammation, mobility, and overall homeostasis. Acupuncture can be used as part of a multimodal approach to a patients care or as a stand alone treatment for some conditions.

On Wednesdays, we learn.

Each week, we meet as a team including doctors, vet technicians, vet assistants, and front desk client service representatives for a staff meeting to ensure that we are working together to give our clients the best care.

In addition to staff meetings, each Wednesday Certified Veterinary Technician Jenn leads teaching rounds. Jenn is not just a CVT, she is also board-certified in Emergency and Critical Care. With over 20 years of experience in both general practice and emergency care, Jenn is a treasure-trove of information and real life experiences. Some topics covered in these sessions include taking vitals, parasites, and medications.

Our goal at the Animal Hospital at Thorndale is to equip our team with knowledge, experience, and support to ensure that our clients receive outstanding care.

You already know about the happy ending for Hercules. We just wanted to share a few more images from his journey to health.

Hercules lived most of his life as an outdoor community cat. However, a few weeks ago, this independent tomcat was found laying against a wall in his neighborhood, injured and covered in maggots. Hercules had extensive injuries and was battling infection, especially in his ears. Under the care of our compassionate team, brave Hercules fought through it all.

The best news is that Hercules, a cat who had always avoided human contact, has grown to appreciate people during his recovery. He will now live his senior years as an indoor cat, pampered and loved.

Oreo is a handsome athlete who came in for the correction of his torn cranial cruciate ligament injury. This is the same issue frequently seen in people, but the repair is vastly unique to the dog.

Dr. Hobday, our board certified surgeon, performed a tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO). This procedure allows dogs to walk on their leg immediately following surgery and get back to normal activity in two months which is when we will see the radial bone cut healed. This procedure neutralizes sheer forces in the knee that occur when the cruciate ligament is damaged.

Here you can see that his preoperative tibial slope is 28 degrees and the postoperative tibial slope is a neutral 5 degrees.

After little Rui was found as a stray, his new owners decided to welcome him into their home. This sweet kitten came to visit us yesterday to make sure that he starts his new life in the healthiest way possible.

Rui is now up-to-date with his vaccinations. He was also treated for ear mites. These minuscule pests can cause itching, irritation, and damage to the cat's ear if left untreated. Fortunately, ear mites can be identified under the microscope. Routine vet care as well as flea and tick prevention are the best ways to keep your cat free from ear mites.

From stray to family member, Rui is feeling pretty pawome these days!

An abscess forms when a wound heals over on its surface, thus sealing the deeper infection inside.

In this case, the abscess developed following a bite wound. Diseased tissue and the inflammatory cells liquify into pus which breaks through the overlying surface skin and drains. This leads to foul odor, pain, and discomfort. Our team lanced the infected area and drained the wound to help this pet feel better.
