We all of things we need to work on, none of us are perfect and we should be given love and grace and the same should be extended to our four legged friends 🐾
Rescue dogs especially typically come from some sort of trauma and need extra support to help rewrite the negative experiences they’ve had into positive ones. A lot of people surrender their animals thinking someone else will pick up the slack and give them the life they always deserve. Getting dropped into a shelter environment can really break an animal, it’s loud, confining, a lot of time in a small environment for a long period of time. The trauma and behavior quirks some of these animals go into the shelter environment can often compound and get worse because they’re not getting support to develop better coping skills. A shelter is not a home and these animals need to be given a second chance to get the happy ever after they so deserve.

Day in the Life of a PAWS Shelter Volunteer
Volunteering is one of my greatest joys and spending time with these amazing animals is such an important aspect of my life! A lot of people always say they could never volunteer at an animal shelter, because it would be too sad. The more volunteers, the more attention, love and rehabilitation these animals receive from their previous trauma which helps the rescue situation so much as a whole. So while it may be sad to leave them all behind when I head home, I’d much rather be there bringing them joy even for a moment than not at all. “It’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all” - Alfred Tennyson

Meet Domino 👋🏻
This very handsome beast boy is full of so much love and snuggles. He is so appreciative of your time and your effort he might even try and give you a hug 🤗
Domino would do really well in a home with older kiddos who can help reinforce good manners with yummy treats and positive reinforcement. He has made some really good friends at @pawsshelter and they always go best with a good meet and greet at the start to establish a good connection and friendship.
Domino loves car rides and loves to feel the wind in his ears, he is not a big fan of water though, he’s a bit of a cat in that way 😏 he is a very good laundry helper, will steal blankets and cuddle them up and make them real warm. He can be a little reactive on a leash, but that may be mainly in the shelter environment, with a little patience love and training with his favorite treats that can definitely be worked on!

Beautiful Noodle has been adopted. This sweet girl has captured the hearts of so many and has been shared countless times and will hopefully spread the important message that rescue animals need time to decompress and build trust. Noodle’s adopters understood that and have had her for a week and it’s going amazing. We are so overjoyed and proud of this sweet girl.
There is a home out there for every single animal, I have hope and so much motivation to find all of the long stays and maybe all the dogs in general at @pawsshelter a home.

This guy has so much love to give and he’s shown it to so many of his that have been lucky enough to get to know him. Biffer is such an interesting case of a rescue not being saved quick enough to where they have to spend an extended amount of time in the shelter, which isn’t always the most stress free environment. @pawsshelter does such an incredible dog to ensure their animals are so loved and well taken care of, but a shelter can never be a home for an animal and Biffer is unfortunately a good example of that.
This guy needs someone really special to step up and help him become the dog we all know he can be. He’ll need someone patient who can go at his pace and help him learn to trust again.

We need to do better for these dogs. As a society, as a community. We have to do better. Way too many animals are getting discarded every single day, because they don’t fit in perfectly with someone’s life… make them fit. So many animals are getting treated horribly and then dumped and those who care deeply are having to pick up the pieces and sometimes having to do the worst possible thing and euthanize the animal because there are too many. My heart breaks daily for the countless animals sitting in shelters, the countless eyes looking at me so sad because their days are numbered. We have to do better. Please share this video, please talk to the people in your life about considering a rescue dog first. Please share this video for them and all the animals like them who need us to be their voice.

Decompression and trust building is so important for rescue dogs, especially for the ones who have dealt with trauma in the past. Some dogs with trauma history are fearful, some choose fight when they go into fight or flight mode in a way to protect themselves. Every time I meet a new dog, I let them get to know me. I let them take their time to see that I am a trustworthy, kind and gentle presence and will never hurt them. This helps them to rewrite the memories of the people who have done the opposite in the past. The more positive experiences they have, the easier it will be to let their guard down and not rely on their fight or flight protective measures anymore.
I am so lucky to volunteer at @pawsshelter and absolutely love interacting with dogs like Noodle who need someone to show them what love is, because they all deserve it.
I highly recommend you look into volunteer opportunities at your local animal shelter. It is such a rewarding and life changing experience!
