Imagine you’re in an overwhelming environment for an extended period of time, a new person or people pick you up and take you to Target, let a bunch of new people hug you. They then take you to their new house (which is completely new to you, new smells, new sounds, etc.) The new people then bring around a bunch of new people to sit with you, talk to you, and hug you. You are expected to be absolutely perfect or they’re going to take you back from where they got you.

Can you just imagine?! Now add in a massive language barrier and that might be a fraction what some rescue dogs feel when they’re brought into a new environment.

The amount of rescue dogs who are returned to shelters and rescues is horrifying. People are giving up left and right because they’re new dog isn’t cuddly, or fitting right into the family right away or accidentally bit someone because 20 minutes after being adopted nipped a stranger at a pet store who was adamant about giving the dog a treat.

We need to do better for them. When you adopt an animal, you are responsible for their well being, you are their advocate and it is your responsibility to keep them safe. Stop rushing them!

Beautiful Godiva. A gorgeous girl who has been waiting for someone to right the wrongs of her life and give her the happy ever after she so desperately deserves. Godiva was adopted from a shelter when she was 3 months old, she was returned just 3 months later due to showing uneasiness towards the resident dog. The owners used a shock collar on her to “prevent any unwanted behavior” and at just 3 months old, Godiva’s only learned coping mechanisms were being punished giving her no safe ways to communicate. Fast forward almost 5 years and Godiva is living behind a kennel door 22 hours a day with dogs barking near her consistently.

Godiva is one of those dogs who flips a beautiful bright light on when she’s with her people. She is extremely tentative, eager to learn and pick up a new trick as often as you can teach her. She is so very affectionate and craves the love and care of a kind human touch, she is playful and so enjoys bringing joy and a carefree feeling to you when you’re around her. This sweet girl is ready to come home to someone who values her, loves her despite what others have put her through and enjoys her company every single day for the rest of her life.

Godiva is almost 5 years old, she’s a beautiful black lab/shepherd mix. She is 55 lbs and available for foster or adoption at pawsshelter in Kyle, Texas. Godiva would do well in an adult only home with no other pets. Although these homes can be challenging to find, we know her people are out there!

Please share her. I know these posts can become overwhelming and “just another dog that needs a home” but you might connect Godiva’s future family to her and how beautiful would that be?

BOXER FANS 🐾

Rocky is looking for a new home!

He’s an amazing, silly, loving, smart, goofy classic Boxer. He is housetrained, gets along with friendly dogs, lives harmoniously with cats and loves all people. He will use a crate if necessary and is the most comfortable bed warmer throughout the night.

Rocky’s best features: Fun, funny, silly, goofy, smart, extremely loving, friendly with friendly dogs, likes cats, housetrained, crate trained, beautiful, is poetry in motion when he’s in full running mode. Rocky needs a yard where he can romp and live his best life!

What Rocky needs to work on: Not jumping on people when he meets them because he thinks everyone wants to love him. He has a typical boxer “scream/bark” at people we see on walks. Again, he thinks everyone should come over and let him love all over them. He’s a beautiful boy who craves love and affection!

Even though I feel so much loss and grief from my past animal shelter experience, I’ve been really reflecting and sitting in gratitude thinking about how much I’ve gained. So many amazing people and animals have come into my life. I now have lifelong friends who I talk to on a regular basis, owners of dogs who I feel so bonded to that I get regular updates on. All the pain and anguish has been worth all of the beauty and joy that has come from the experience. Thank you to those of you who are fully invested with hearts in the right place and thank you for the unwavering support and love.

I am going to be taking a little bit of time to reset, reestablish some boundaries for my empathetic heart and get back to work ready to invest in making a positive impact in what I can control 🤍

Are all coping skills positive and healthy? No, do we even as humans struggle with unhealthy coping skills? Yes.. ask my 4 year old daughter who screams like a banshee when she’s mad. Is she a bad kid? No. She just needs help learning better coping mechanisms to deal with her frustration. Dogs need that same patience, grace and love. We need to change our way of thinking about dog behavior and instead of condemning a dog for their behavior, we need to help them learn healthier coping techniques and become the best versions of themselves.

Luling Animal Welfare Society - LAWS is a small shelter out in Luling, TX that will be participating in a 24 hour long shelter slumber pawty event which works to bring awareness to shelter animals and the lives they live while waiting for their furever homes. They are so close to their $10,000 goal which helps to vaccinate, spay/neuter, feed, train and rehabilitate the hundreds of stray dogs they take in and find new homes for. If we can get 192 people to donate $10 they’d make their goal!! Can you be one of those people?? 🩷

I have been volunteering with LAWS for a few months now and the love and care they give to their animals is incredible. A stray, scared dog will come to them and within hours the kennel manager will have worked to build their trust, get them settled and comfortable around people and established in a well matched play group. The love and care they have is so refreshing to witness! Let’s help them reach their goal!
