Conformation photos are a very important part of your marketing strategy. Whether it is marketing a stallion at stud, a sale horse, or your broodmares, being able to judge conformation is key to people choosing your program or not.
Here are some tips to ensure you get great conformation photos.
1- CORRECT FITTING TACK! Make SURE your halter you use, FITS the horses head. It is snug up to the “knowledge bumps” on the face. It fits clean under the throat latch. That means up behind the jowels, not sitting on the side of them. And for the love of Pete do NOT use a bronc halter. It massively distorts the head and takes away from the beauty of the horses head. Just don’t use them. They are awful.
2- Proper Foot Placement! The feet closest to the camera should be perfectly square under the horses body. There should be a plumb line from the trailhead, to the hock, to the ground, and the cannon bone should line up with that plumb line for the hind leg. The front leg should have a plumb line from the elbow, to the back of the knee, to the ground and again, the cannon bone should line up with that line. The feet furthest away from the camera should be just 1-2 inches in front of the hind leg, and 1-2 inches behind the front leg to ensure you can see all 4 feet.
3- Correct Camera Angle! The photos should be taken from the stifle of the horse, with your shoulders (and camera) square to the horse from a squatting position. This ensures correct and accurate photographs to judge the horses conformation.
4- Head and Neck Placement! The neck should be placed with the natural emergence from the shoulders. On the performance horses, that is generally level with or slightly above the withers. Head should be JUST slightly turned towards the camera, with the ears up.
These simple things can elevate your conformation photography leaps and bounds and help push your program in the right direction with your marketing strategy.
