Hydroponic update!!

This is 8 days of growth on my oat grass. Oats are a bit harder to grow than wheat or barley, and it hasn’t quite reached the 6 inches it should by day 8, so I’m waiting to feed it to the animals til day 10. I’ll be switching to sprouting only barley or wheat soon, but I’m really happy with the results!

I’ve been working on this hydroponic fodder system this past month or so, and finally got it done! In a few days all these trays will be full of oat sprouts and grass. We hope to be feeding the chickens, rabbits, and eventually goats from this to improve health and cut down on feed costs. I’ll be posting updates as things get going!

I finished building my first chicken tractor in the Fall for my Speckled Sussex, and after sitting winterized for the past few months, it’s now being put to good use fertilizing the future garden. It usually gets moved every day to fresh pasture and has been working great so far!

We have downsized some of our breeding stock recently and haven’t had many litters. However, we will have some full blooded Flemish available in June. These will be non-showable colors, suitable for breeders or pets only. In the future we will have pedigreed Flemish in light gray and black.

Cleo has been hard at work making a nest. She is due anytime now. One of our red does has also made her nest, bred to our red broken buck, Flip. Lots of babies coming!

The ducklings enjoyed the nice weather yesterday evening. We chose Khaki Campbell ducks because of their excellent egg production. They are known to lay up to 340 eggs per year!
