Out of the Bark will be closed from December 23rd through January 1st. During this time, we will be open by appointment only.

As the year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to say thank you. We are incredibly grateful for our amazing community and for the continued support of our small business. Your trust, kindness, and commitment to your dogs mean the world to us, and we truly couldn’t do this without you.

Wishing you and your pups a joyful, safe, and restful holiday season 💛🐶

The last time Oakley went to the groomer, it ended in a growl and a bite.
So we didn’t “try again and hope for the best.”

We prepared.

✔️ Consent-based handling
✔️ Muzzle conditioning without pressure
✔️ Desensitization to tools before the appointment

The result: a successful grooming visit, a muzzled dog who remained regulated, and a groomer who could work safely.

Muzzles aren’t a failure.
Preparation isn’t optional.
This is what responsible behavior work looks like.

We all want a dog who comes when called…even with distractions.

The foundation isn’t repetition or pressure. It’s association.

By pairing a neutral sound (like a bell) with food, we teach the dog that the sound itself predicts something good.

Sound → food.
Sound → food.

That’s classical conditioning.

Once the association is strong, then we layer in cues, distance, and distractions. This is how recall starts.

True calm doesn’t come from exhaustion… it comes from safety, predictability, and trust.

Today we practice… absolutely nothing.

Cooperative care isn’t just training— it’s trust.
It’s teaching dogs that their voice matters.💛

From wipe-downs to nail trims to vet visits, we help dogs participate willingly using fear-free, reward-based methods.

They get to say “yes” … and “not right now.”
And when we pause and listen?
Their confidence grows. Their stress drops. Their whole world changes.

Cooperative care makes life easier, but more importantly, it makes dogs feel safe, understood, and empowered. ✨🐾

Your dog is NOT giving you a hard time…They are having a hard time. ...

Meet Loki — a 5-year-old with a big personality and two injections a day on his care plan. He came to us after biting everyone in the house and even making it tough just to open the drawer where his muzzle was kept.
Thanks to a referral from Arroyo Vet in Livermore, we started cooperative care training… and wow, what a transformation!

In just 6 sessions we:
✨ Shoving his head happily in his muzzle
✨ Built up his muzzle-wearing duration
✨ Taught him how to comfortably eat through the muzzle
✨ Took happy walks with zero pawing at it
Next up: introducing injection practice in a fear-free, cooperative way.

Stay tuned — Loki’s just getting started. 💛🐾
