One thing I struggled at home with Milo as he constantly wants some kind of play/engagement.
We have started to incorporating during our walks is do nothing because teaching your dog DOING NOTHING is doing something is one of the most important concepts of getting a dog to be calm.
This is something I have frequently started to use inside my house as well! Don’t be afraid to put a leash on your dog, and just say for right now, in these next 10 to 15 minutes, we’re going to learn that doing nothing is doing something.
@Dan Clark & @jenbiglan have been telling me that Milo doesn’t always need something to do, or some new crazy enrichment game. They both suggested that I should focus on Milo not doing anything and teach him doing nothing is still doing something.
P.S. They both also suggest this is a good practice for me too (I need to learn to chill out🤣🤪)
Start preparing for firework season now!
Having an anxious or frightened dog can be really hard to deal with for pets and owners perspective.
We have put together some helpful tips to aid you through a stressful time.
* Start by desensitizing your dog to loud noises. Over time, your dog can learn associate these sounds with something pleasant instead of something scary.
* Create a safe space for your dog to feel comfortable, such as, a blanket draped over their crate or under a table.
* Avoid letting your dogs outside or walking your dogs when fireworks are likely to go off. Make sure you take them for a long walk to tire them out long before the fireworks start.
* Play the radio, TV or classical music to mask the sound of fireworks.
* Meet their needs before the evening! Going on a nice walk, playing games, and providing your pup with food puzzles before the night are amazing ways to physically and mentally tire your pup out, making it easier for them to settle and relax.
* Try using a calming collar, pheromone spray, or wall plugins to create a calming environment.
* Make sure your dog’s tags are up-to-date and microchipped in the event that they get loose.
* If there is still concern about your pups stress levels, consult your veterinarian for possible medication to help your pup get through the night.
