Tuffy got a new hair do!

Because his right eye is blind, possibly from damage to his eye socket, it has some issues with drainage. With his long forelock, it often gets stuck in his eye gunk and irritates his eye. Plus he needs to be able to see better with his left eye.

So we have him a pony tail haha!

He seems to actually enjoy it and has been more spunky! Every time someone is at the back door he hurries over to give his hellos. Of course he gets lots of love for being such a sweet gentleman.

The journey of repairing is feet is still on going and will be for some time. Sadly it isn't a quick fix but we, as well as his farrier, have high hopes for a wonderful recovery!

And yes, compared to the two donkeys and Willow the other pony, Tuffy is skinnier but the great quality hay as well as plenty of sneaked treats is doing wonders for his weight gain!

Sam's daughter got to see her best friends' family bees! She had a blast learning about them and hasn't stopped talking all about them!

If you haven't yet, go give Thistle Creek Farms a like or a follow to show your support to a generational family farm!

The pigeons are happy with the renovations in their loft! Any potential danger hole that could allow predators was covered and sealed. Nest boxes were moved for ease of access for the pigeons and us. Roosts were shifted so no more getting pooed on when feeding and watering.

The bobwhite quail we have are enjoying it too! They have plenty of places to scurry about and have fun! This winter we'll put the Contournix quail back in so they can enjoy the loft as well!

Now to finish the boy pen for the goats and sheep as well as finish moving this year's kids and lambs to officially wean them off of their moms! The first time they went right back to nursing when put in with the flerd so this time, we will keep them separated until the moms have been dry (not in milk) for awhile.

We've been busy with renovations in the barn!

From securing the pigeon loft, installing fans, fixing rabbit cages, planning the buck pen, and more, we've been keeping busy! We've also been getting ready for two goat does that are possibly due in October so the kidding pens are getting spiffied up! Miss Saturday is one of the two does so we have our fingers crossed for happy healthy goat kids!

Even though it's still summer, we like to get things that we use in winter emergencies ready. Our kidding pens are one of those things. They are set up to keep the mother and babies warm and cozy with privacy for them to bond. It is a very good set up for first time mom goats and sheep to help with bonding! Plus it gives us easier access to spoil the babies rotten!

It's been busy and hectic on our end here at the farmstead!

Between the oats being harvested, straw and hay being bales, trying to beat the rain on all ends, it feels like today is the first day we get a moment to breathe. Hopefully everything is calm and smooth sailing until the next super hectic spell. Every farmer knows they come in waves!

We have raw oats straight from the field available!

Oats make for a great livestock and equine grain and our oats have no herbicide, pesticides, and the ground they grew from was fertilized with the poo from all our livestock! We also feed it to all our critters!

There is a lower risk and worry of bloat and acidosis when feeding oats but it's still good to be careful so the animals don't gorge and get a tummy ache. It's like when you get a delicious treat and eat too much, then your belly is mad at you. So moderation is key till they are used to it!

You can also take them home, clean them, and use to make your own flour or oatmeal! We don't have the tools to do that so you'll have to do it on your own!

One fifty pound bag is only $25 and goes straight back into the farmstead. Pick up is obviously at the farmstead!

Shoot us a message if you're interested!

It's combine day!

You'd think it was Christmas, Halloween, and her birthday wrapped into one day with how excited the youngest member of the farmstead is!

So far we have three gravity boxes full and there's still more to do!

Big shout out to Thistle Creek Farms and the Gillen family, Fox Lake Farm, for being awesome neighbors and helpers! We got a third wagon from Thistle Creek and Fox Lake Farm has been doing the combining. It takes a village even when farming!

Harlequin buns everywhere!

All three litters have been moved into the grow out pen since the weather has been waaay too hot for them to bounce around outside. The boys get the back while the girls get the front.

Interested in getting a Harli rabbit? As you can see, we have many to choose from! Not all are show quality and there are a few meat only stock but there's plenty to choose from for your needs!

Rice County Sheriff Jesse Thomas reminds residents to be on the lookout after a resident reported receiving a voicemail from a county government number. The caller claimed to be a deputy sheriff and asked the person to call them back at a different phone number.

If you get a strange or unexpected call from the government or law enforcement, the sheriff recommends you hang up.

And if you find yourself on the phone with someone claiming to be a government official or law enforcement, DO NOT give out — or confirm — your personal or financial information.

Today this handsome bull came to visit our ladies for a spell. He's a pure Hereford and ready to give us some more pure Hereford calves next year. We picked him for his deep red coloring, easy going temperament, and low birth weight for first time heifers. His genetics will give us some even deeper red coloring in our calves!

We leased him from Rood Family Bull Rental who has many bulls of different breeds for rent. They service Minnesota and the neighboring states for everyone's bull needs, from AI to live service. We are so happy to be doing business with this family business!

When you grind your own feed, you get to know your local feed mill!

I've known Steve at the Lonsdale Feed Mill since I was my daughter's age. Some of the best memories I have were going to the mill and listening, in awe, while my dad and Steve talked crops. If I misbehaved, both would tease me that I'd have to go shovel corn in the pit. Now I tease my daughter the same way when we're there.

There is something special about knowing generations of a family business that spans your own family's generations! From customers buying grain or feed to farmers delivering their grain to the workers of the feed mill, everyone starts to know each other.

My daughter and Steve were giving each other a knowing look as her grandpa Nate started complaining about the rain, yet again haha!

So the winner is Kristin Matson of Madison and her Cloverbud goat!!!!

We will still have a fun contest of who likes what picture the best of pictures taken by our friends of animals at the fair! It will be a shorter contest with no prize but will still be fun!

And that's a wrap for the 2024 Rice County Fair !

We had a blast, all the kids had fun with their shows, and they made some new friends. Already the list has started for what they want to show next year. Thistle Creek Farms oldest child is a real 4Her next year so she gets to take a lot more critters!

We hope everyone enjoyed the fair! Now we'll be getting ready for the BCPP and MSPA pigeon shows this winter. All the kids enjoy the pigeon shows and talking to seasoned pigeon breeders.

It's the last day of the fair! So bittersweet.

On one hand, we are sad to see the fair end for the year. It was a great time again with all the kids making new friends, learning about new animals and projects they want to do next year, and enjoying fair time. Sadly it's the last year for some of our 4Hers and we have to say goodbye.

On the other, it is going to be wonderful having all the animals back home under one barn roof again! We won't have to worry about anyone being rude or mean to them (though the barn guards have been doing amazing about keeping the animals safe), and no more multiple trips to town and back every day. Plus now we'll prepare for the pigeon show season!

We hope everyone enjoyed the fair this year and enjoys the last day! Fair season isn't over, with our neighboring counties having their fairs coming up,so if you didn't make it don't worry! You'll still get your fair fix if you desire!

Jet the pony from Thistle Creek Farms is ready to go home and see all his pasture friends again!

The last show of the fair season was wrapped up in the Dairy Goat Cloverbud class! Saturday did awesome for her little kid!

Already she has a list for next year 😱 She wants to add a beef cattle project and a meat goat project but either drop sheep or take a hair sheep for the sheep project. Oh me oh my we're gonna be busy! At least we'll have more time to get Mootilda ready for her fair life next year as well as finish her training to visit nursing homes and such.

We hope everyone is having a blast at the fair and enjoying seeing all the animals! The 4Hers work hard year round to get their animal projects ready so stop by and admire them. Don't forget the General projects either! They all worked hard on those as well!

I worked at the 4H Food Sta d tonight and had a blast! It was great to see so many people coming in to support the 4Hers as well as getting some good food!

When you come to the fair, be sure to swing on by! Even if it's just to get a cup of coffee or a bottle of water, stopping in shows you support these kids. Take a moment as well to check out all their awesome General projects in the Food Stand area.

You don't have to show an animal to show in 4H at the fair! Stopping in and looking at the general projects will show you everything you can do and then some!

We hope everyone has been able to enjoy the fair so far!

Please remember when in the animal barns:
No screaming or yelling
No hitting the cages
No trying to scare the animals
Be polite and respectful to the hard work the 4H kids and their animals put in to be at the fair

Enjoy the fair!

The next generation of pigeon hobbiests! We love talking to all the kids about pigeons and getting them interested in these amazing animals. That's why Sam spent almost an hour talking to two first time pigeon showers about their breeds and pigeons.

Do you want to learn more about pigeons? Feel free to reach out and ask us! With over 20 years of breeding, caring, and showing pigeons we know a little bit that we'd love to share!

Stop us at the fair to ask your questions or just message us. We've been playing with the idea of hosting a workshop for kids to learn about pigeons. Just have to find the time to talk to the head boss of the Poultry Project!

Be sure to come by the Rice County Fair and see the kids' hard work!

Headed to the fair. Be sure to stop out this week and check out all the hard work from the kids.

The General Classes were judged today at the Rice County Fair! Great job to all the 4Hers who had a General project! You don't have to have animals or livestock to have a good time in 4H!

Now on to the contest! From the 17th to the 21st, take a picture of your favorite 4H ANIMAL at the Rice County Fair and post it!

On the 22nd we will compile all the pictures into a post, each will have the photographer's name watermarked onto it, and let everyone (not just our locals) vote what their favorite picture is. Voting will be held from the 23rd to the 25th.

What does the winner get? We are offering either a breeding pair of Harlequin rabbits OR 50 dollars, the equivalent of one of our breeding pairs!

To be eligible you must:
*Like or Follow our page
*Be a Rice County resident or local county (Steele, Dakota, ect)
*Post your picture either in the comments of this post OR on our page OR message our page your photo
(If commenting your picture make sure it's on this original post and not a shared post)

Failure to follow these three requirements will sadly result in your photo not being posted in the voting pool.

All 4H, FFA, and ARBA kids get an extra vote with proof of being a member of any of the three organizations!

We cannot WAIT to see all the fun pictures!

Before we get overwhelmed by the fair this week, look at what happened here!

We are beyond excited to have our very first litter of French Lop kits! It's been over eight years since we've had them and seeing seven healthy bouncing bunny beans has our hearts full!

Later, either tonight or tomorrow, we are going to post about a contest for our local followers involving the Rice County Fair. So stay tuned!

Having five dogs in the house, this made everyone laugh!

How many pets do you have in your house? What are some ways you deal with the shedding and the mess? We've just accepted that we will always have the vacuum at the ready to clean up hair. The mop is also always ready to be used when it's raining out!

Look at all these Harlequin babies! They were all a little miffed about being put in their nighttime pens instead of being allowed to nibble in the yard longer!

Our magpies, a color pattern of Harlis, are ready to go to new homes! Their sire is Expresso, who will be at the Rice County Fair, and our two black magpie does Chai Tea and Americano. We also have Japanese, the second color pattern, ready from our Japanese doe Macchiato and our black Magpie buck Decaf.

These twin brothers will be available after the Rice County Fair! Be sure to come down and see them in all their sheep-y cuteness!

Because two Cloverbuds have been working hard with them, they lead very well and have good manners. They are wethered to be able to be shown at the county fair but that doesn't deter from how adorable they are!

Here they are taking a break after being led around before meal time.

Sadly we are trying to find a Hereford bull to keep our ladies company from August to October this year. The farm we usually rent a bull from decided to go the black white face route and we want a nice Hereford lad to keep our calves pure Hereford.

We are near Dundas, MN and would prefer to rent a bull within a 30 minute radius of us, in case of emergencies or issues so then the fellow farmer is reasonably nearby. The bull needs to have a good attitude towards calves and preferably no aggression towards farm equipment (IE skidsteer).

Let us know if you have a bull that fits the bill!

Tuffy got some cuddles in the middle of his grooming session with the youngest farmer. He's such a gentle soul!

We are working with our farrier to repair his hooves that were overgrown and damaged from the neglect he suffered before coming into our care. Our farrier is positive he can fix Tuffy's hooves to almost perfect condition but stressed he'll never be able to be a show pony, which we don't mind. He'll just be the big snuggle bug on the farmstead and a confidence booster for the little girl who loves him.
