Do dogs chew their food or swallow it whole?

A question I get all the time and the answer might surprise you!

Most dogs don’t actually chew their food the way we do. Their teeth are designed for crunching, tearing, and swallowing, not grinding. So you’ll often see them break a piece once (maybe) and gulp it down.

But don’t worry dogs are built for this. Their digestive system is made to handle larger pieces of food.

Why many dogs swallow food whole:
• Natural instinct to eat quickly
• Small kibble that’s easy to gulp
• High excitement or food motivation
• Multi-dog homes where they feel rushed

When it can become a problem:
• Choking
• Vomiting from eating too fast
• Poor digestion
• Increased risk of bloat in larger breeds

Ways to help your dog slow down:
• Use a slow-feeder bowl
• Offer puzzle feeders or snuffle mats
• Feed slightly larger kibble that encourages chewing
• Incorporate enrichment-based meals
• Provide safe chew options for dental health and mental stimulation

Dogs don’t naturally chew like we do but with the right tools, we can help them eat safely, calmly, and in a way that supports their overall well-being. 🐾💛
