Let’s catch up on some canine body language.
(Not my photo)

Tail wagging and raised heckles, what does It mean?

Emotional arousal, which can be positive (excited curiosity) or negative (anxiety, fear, or tension).

Tail wagging doesn't always mean friendliness. Dogs wag their tails for many reasons, such as nervousness, excitement, tension, or aggression.

What to look for:

Speed of the wag: Fast, loose wags tend to mean excitement or friendliness.
Slow, stiff wags often signal uncertainty or agitation.

Tail position:
High stiff wag = alert/dominant.
low wag = nervous
mid level wag = neutral or curious.

What Raised Hackles Mean:

This is called piloerection and is involuntary. Like goosebumps for humans.
It means your dog is on high alert.
This can happen due to:
Seeing an unfamiliar dog or person
Feeling threatened or unsure
Overstimulation or excitement

What This Combo Could Mean:

Your dog is processing something emotionally intense. Possibly feeling unsure, challenged, or over stimulated. The tail wag can mask stress, so it's important to consider the whole body.

If your dog’s body is:

Loose, playful, bowing, ears relaxed β†’ excitement or curiosity.
Stiff, ears forward or pinned, eyes wide, growling or tense mouth β†’ tension or defensive/aggressive arousal.
