Stop in and find your purrrrfect companion!!

Say hello to beautiful Belle! Belle is a sweet, petite, affectionate and talkative all black female around a year old. She likes visits from the volunteers and will talk to you to ensure you don’t pass her by during visits! She lives with others at the shelter and gets along fine with them so she would be fine as your one and only girl or as an addition to a multi cat family! If you are interested in giving Belle the life she deserves, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday from 12-3pm . All LHS cats and dogs are fully vetted, spayed/neutered and up to date on all their shots.

Sherman isn't that far away 🤣.

The Dog Control officer in Sherman is an amazing human. She covers many townships and is often overwhelmed with dogs. Most she is able to transfer to other shelters/rescues, but she likes them to go directly to a home.

She also has lots and lots of kitties looking for barn/workshop homes.

We wanted to give you a little update on our intentions for this page. This page was originally created by a group of like-minded animal rescuers who care deeply about the dire situation going on in Chautauqua County (and pretty much everywhere else). It was created to share adoptable animals from the local rescues which at the time, shared space at a local retailer. We will continue to share adoptable animals and animal events from Chautauqua County, but we need to take care of our own animals before we think about helping other areas. It is not because we are cat haters, it is the opposite. A life is a life but when animals are brought to another area to be adopted, you are giving a local animal a death sentence.

Have you noticed that no matter where you go in Chautauqua County, you will see a cat? We are overrun with cats and there is little to no help. Our humane societies, SPCA and small animal rescues are bursting at the seams. They cannot take anymore animals. Those that have funding, don't have the veterinary resources. Those with the veterinary resources, don't have funding. We do not have animal control officers; we have dog control officers who are also overwhelmed. While organizations are disagreeing over how to help with the problem, cats (and dogs) are dying. Yes, animals in Chautauqua County are being euthanized on a regular basis. Those are the lucky ones. In most cases when a sick, injured, abandoned, unwanted animal is found by the public, they have absolutely nowhere to take it. After reaching out to every rescue/shelter we have, they are left with no other options. Animals who have nobody to help them, often suffer a fate worse than death. Leaving these animal in the world to fend for themselves can end in a cruel and painful death. To these animals, a peaceful sleep would be the kindest thing we could offer them.

So often animal rescues try to put the blame elsewhere. When someone calls you and says, 'I found this kitten, I need help because I am not allowed to have pets on my apartment'. What about someone that has to move across country immediately due to an unexpected death of a young family member. The young man who chose to go into a year long rehab program but could not find anyone who could watch his cats, so he surrendered them. These are all things that have happened. These people had absolutely nowhere to reach out for help because they literally called everyone and were likely chastised in some shape or form. Instead of putting the blame on the people that ended up in these unpreventable situations, maybe we should put the blame on ourselves. Every single time an animal is turned away, that animal's fate is likely sealed. Maybe if we all worked just a little bit harder, maybe we could actually make a difference.

If you are in Chautauqua County and you wish to help the cats of Chautauqua County, please consider supporting one of your local animal rescues or municipal shelters. No rescue is going to be successful if they don't find adopters. Our goal with this page is to match rescues with potential adopters, while strongly promoting adoption from Chautauqua County rescues.

Thank you to each and every one of you who have supported the various organizations helping Chautauqua County cats. Please share our page and our events. We need ALL OF YOU to help. The cats are in trouble. Please share and ask your friends to adopt locally. There are so many worthy rescues in Chautauqua County. Message them and set up an appointment to meet them today.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who has supported our adoption partners during National Adoption Week. Without your continued support, we would not be as successful as we are. With your help we have found homes for 42 animals. This has been our most successful adoption week ever.

Today is the 3rd day of National Adoption Week. We are so thankful to our pet parents and our amazing volunteers.

Those kind individuals you see in our adoption center are all very dedicated volunteers. They go above and beyond not just during NAW but all year long. Not only are they helping to process adoptions but they also ensure that all the animals are cleaned, fed and made comfy. Having these volunteers readily available makes the adoption process easier. We are so truly blessed to have such amazing volunteers and loyal pet parents. Together we have saved 18 Chautauqua County lives in the past 2 days.

Please help us to help more cats in our area. There are so many stray and abandoned cats in Dunkirk and surrounding areas. Every person who adopts an animal is saving 2 lives. For every animal adopted, another one is saved. Let’s work together to make the world a better place. Not only for the cats but the people too.

Tell your friends to stop by the store all week. Someone will be on-site from open to close until Sunday.

Hi everyone! Meet Vader! He is a very sweet and loving kitty who is ready to find his forever home. We were told that he was feral at first but something about him made us think otherwise. He didn't show signs of being afraid of humans but he would just sleep most of the day. After being in a foster home with some outgoing kittens he learned how to act like any other kitten. He even learned how to ask for attention, to meow, and to even purr. Vader is 8 months old, neutered, and up to date on all his vaccines and is waiting to find a home.

As June comes to an end, we want to share with you some amazing adoption stories and the animals currently available at our adoption center. There are also a few changes you might notice, and we want to make the transition as easy as possible for all.

During the month of June, we had 49 adoptions. We have had 204 adoptions since February 1st (start of fiscal year). Our little, tiny store, our compassionate volunteers and our amazing pet parents are what make us successful. We are so truly blessed to be part of such an amazing and caring community.

We will do our best to keep our page updated but if you are traveling from a distance, call the store first to see if the animal is still available. Many of the store associates will process same day adoptions and an animal may have already been adopted. This is especially important with small animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits. Rabbits are not housed in the store 24/7 and can only be there when volunteers are present. Guinea pigs are now housed in the store 24/7. When we have available guinea pigs, they will be at the end of the small animal aisle near the cat room.

National Adoption Week is coming up starting July 15th. We are hoping this is the most successful event to date. We will be flooding our page with photos and are asking you to share. A lot of little lives are depending on you.

Please check out our current adoptable animals. Information and how to apply can be found in each photo.

It is TRUE, we HAVE KITTENS!! So many of you have been patiently waiting for a kitten. Well, now is your time to get one. We currently have 3 kittens (10 weeks) that are ready to go and one older kitten (6 months).

We have over 30 guinea pigs visiting us this weekend. These little guys and girls are patiently waiting for someone to give them a loving home. Guinea pigs are social and most like to have a friend. Reduced cost adoptions this weekend only. All adoptable guinea pigs are $20.

If you have your heart set on an adult cat? We have several available from all 3 rescues that are currently residing in our store. Stop by and meet them and we can help you get your application approved.

06/01/2024

Due to the safety of the animals, we have been advised that the small animals need to be housed in a different location than the cats. While we have always shared space, we never considered that not only could it be disasterous if one of our small animals escaped but just being housed next to cats could be incredibly stressful for these tiny and sensitive little souls.

Thanks to our amazing store leaders and our awesome district manager, a request has been placed for us to get an entirely seperate enclosure for our small animals. When our partners don't have small animals, we can utilize that extra space for extra felines.

Until we receive this kennel and are able to keep our guinea pigs and small animals in a different location, we have pulled them from the store. We are going to try to set up at least once a week for meet and greets and we will continue to post our guinea pigs here. If you are interested in adopting a guinea pig. Contact us and we will set up a time to meet with you. Also keep an eye on this page for the other small animals and rabbits we have in our care.

A representative will be in the store this Sunday (June 2nd) from 1 to 4 PM. Stop by and meet these beautiful little piggies.

Thank you PetSmartand PetSmart Charities for doing anything for pets!!

Hi all! We are looking for dedicated volunteers for our cats and guinea pigs at the Dunkirk Petsmart. Our volunteers typically come in once a week for around an hour. It is a very fulfilling position that allows us to ensure our animals are taken care of while they await their forever homes. It also gives the animals time to interact and play. Cleaning includes scooping the litter boxes, providing fresh water, filling up food dishes, and of course some free cat therapy. We are still looking for volunteers to come in Sunday mornings and night and Wednesday nights. We are very understanding that life happens and you may not be able to make it some days. If that ever happens just message the volunteer coordinator and she will be able to cover.
