The English Springer Spaniel is a sweet-faced, lovable bird dog of great energy, stamina, and brains. Sport hunters appreciate the duality of working Springers: handsome, well mannered pets during the week, and trusty hunting, show and performance buddies on weekends.

Are you interested in this breed? The OFA, working with the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association, recommends the following basic health screening tests for all breeding stock:
- Hip Dysplasia (OFA or PennHip)
- Elbow Dysplasia
- ACVO Eye Exam
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy
- DNA Repository
Optional but recommended:
- FUCOSIDOSIS
- PFK
- Degenerative Myelopathy
- Autoimmune Thyroiditis
- Cardiac (Basic, congenital, or advanced via a cardiologist)

Dogs meeting these basic health screening requirements are issued Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) numbers. For potential puppy buyers, CHIC certification is a good indicator the breeder responsibly factors good health into their selection criteria.

Trooper has been so much fun. He's already had success in the show ring, he's getting the hang of agility, and loves to play scent (we are working on being gentle with the boxes before we trial.)

He's a super sweet boy, and his health clearances make a breeder smile. CHIC #: 200401

He's the sire of our upcoming litter.

Does your dog/puppy pull on their leash when you are trying walk them.

We recommend positive reinforcement when teaching your dog these skills.

Remember, your dog's neck is similar to yours. There are many very important structures such as major arteries and their spinal cord in their neck. Dogs can sprain and even break their necks. So you do not want to be excessively popping your dog when trying to train them to a leash.

Loose leash walking comes by building a relationship with your dog based on mutual love and respect.

Here is my list of the characteristics of an ethical breeder on my list:

Fully health tested parents-
this is more than a vet visit. This includes breed specific and general health genetic testing
OFA and Penn hip exams
Eye exams yearly
All parent club related health testing

Temperament testing

Proving your dog in conformation, performance events, and companion events.

Screening potential buyers to find life long loving homes

Spay and neuter contacts

Taking back puppies they produce if the owners can not keep them

Microchipping puppies before they go home.

AKC registration completed before they go home.

Age appropriate vaccinations and well puppy exams.

Eye exams by a veterinary ophthalmologist

Using puppy protocols such as puppy culture and early neurological stimulation.

I wanted to update you about our offerings at Sunset Hills Dog Training.

In 2024 we changed our format to a single class system. All classes are pay as you go. This is to help you work around your schedule and budget while still being able to participate in activities with your dog. All classes are $25 per dog per class. I'm very proud to say we have been able to maintain our current low prices since our opening in January of 2020, and we have no plans to increase prices in the near future..

In 2024 we added a Star Puppy/Trick Dog/baby-agility class. In this class puppies build their confidence learning baby agility skills and earning their new star puppy title and their trick dog novice title. Puppies need to have completed their puppy series of shots and be less than one year of age.
