It is important to make sure the water is safe before jumping in or letting pets swim/drink. The Swim Guide is a free resource that provides weekly updates to local water quality testing. Trained staff, volunteers, and partners collect samples at nearly 20 popular swimming spots and then publish results weekly on the Swim Guide website!
Not every body of water is tested, but it is a good start if you are looking for a safe spot to cool off this summer.

So many foods, medications, cleaners etc. are toxic to our furry friends, not to mention the endless amount of items your pet may ingest. A lot of times a first reaction when you know your pet has gotten into something they shouldn't have is to induce vomiting, but that is not always the best method! Certain toxins are extremely irritating to the GI tract and mucous membranes. Once mixed with stomach acids, they can be even become even more harmful. In these cases, it's best to get your pet to your veterinarian so they can treat them and help prevent the absorption of the toxin. There is also a possibility the object your pet has swallowed is sharp, jagged, or very large, in which case vomiting the item can cause injury to the esophagus and mouth when it is forcibly pushed through the upper GI tract. It's best to let the vet decide how to handle foreign bodies. In some cases, it may pass on its own, in other cases, your pet will need surgery or endoscopy to remove the foreign body. If your pet has gotten into a toxic food or substance or swallowed a foreign body, stay calm and call your vet or get them to an emergency clinic as soon as possible. You can also call Pet Poison Control for more information if you know what toxin your pet has ingested.
