“Look at that bad dog with the huge muzzle”

Today this was said to me along with several other comments about my “mean doggie” at the farmers market. In the past this would’ve upset me but I’ve learned muzzling is a form of advocating for your dog. There was also positives, one kind woman stopped appropriate distance from us to offer encouragement and said good work and that’s a nicely fitted muzzle

Muzzled dogs are not “bad dogs” they are scared dogs, brave dogs, dogs in training, shy dogs, scavengers, and a million other reasons!

What can we all do better as dog people to support responsible muzzle training?

- look away/avoid eye contact with dog
- give space
- refrain from judging/assuming
- keep your dog back
- do not pet or approach unless invited to
- give the owner a thumbs up or a smile they’re probably already nervous and feeling judged!
