Meet Salty, a brave patient undergoing treatment for a liver mass we've been closely monitoring with ultrasound and CT scans. Recently, changes in the mass prompted an exploratory surgery, and our team has been dedicated to providing Salty with the best possible care and support throughout this journey.

During the procedure, we discovered a large mass involving the left medial liver lobe, extending toward the hilus of the liver, and affecting the left lateral and quadrate liver lobes. While the mass was deemed non-resectable, we obtained a biopsy to guide the next steps in Salty's care.

Fortunately, the biopsy results came back benign! Salty was diagnosed with nodular hyperplasia, a common and benign condition in older dogs. This condition occurs in 70-100% of dogs by the age of 14, with no specific breed or s*x predisposition. It’s a relief to know that Salty's mass is part of this frequent, age-related occurrence, and he’s receiving all the love and care he deserves. 💙

Meet Ash, a one-year-old American Shorthair feline and one of our incredible blood donors! 🐾🩸

Ash joined his family as a young kitten after overcoming a tough start. He had a right femoral neck fracture with scar tissue and bone callus that required FHO surgery, performed by Dr. Zweig and Dr. Coronado. Since then, Ash has been living his best life! Known as a total love bug, he actually enjoys coming into work, which inspired his family to enroll him in the blood donor program. When Ash isn’t busy saving lives, you can find him snuggling with his family, soaking up the sun, or playing with his floppy fish toy. At home, he’s affectionately nicknamed ‘Fluff’ for his gorgeous fluffy white coat, and he never says no to fishy treats!

Just like human hospitals, we rely on blood donations to save lives. Ash’s generous donation of whole blood will help pets in need, and we’re so grateful to him for being a lifesaving hero!

At this time, our blood bank program is only accepting dog donors. If you think your dog could be a hero, visit osvs.net/blood-bank/ to learn more!

Externships provide invaluable hands-on experience that helps develop both clinical and communication skills. ‘I loved being able to further my knowledge about procedures and why they're done. I appreciated the veterinarians who allowed me to be a bit more hands-on with my learning,’ shared Fallon Pfeifer, a University of Glasgow student (class of 2027), as she reflected on her time at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists.

During her externship, Fallon worked closely with Dr. Lucy Spelman, who shared her expertise in exotics; Dr. Julia Klinzman, who empowered her to take the lead in clinical diagnostics; and Dr. Brett Hogberg, who guided her in using physical exam findings to shape diagnoses.

We’re so proud to be part of Fallon’s journey and can’t wait to see the amazing things she’ll accomplish! 🐾

Jackson’s Incredible Journey 💕

After six weeks on the run through Johnston and Providence, Jackson was safely trapped by the dedicated volunteers at Missing Dogs Massachusetts and brought to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. Despite his long adventure, he remained remarkably resilient. We were honored to be part of his incredible reunion with his family—a moment that brought tears to our eyes. Welcome home, Jackson!

Upon presentation, his vital signs were normal, though he was noticeably thin. His physical exam revealed a dirty haircoat, a few superficial scrapes, and some chipped teeth—but overall, he was in surprisingly good condition.

We are so happy that Jackson is now safe and back where he belongs! His story is a testament to the strength and resilience of our beloved pets.

Bruce’s Journey to Recovery! 🐾💙

Bruce came to our ER after a fall from the couch left him unable to put weight on his right hind leg. X-rays revealed a fracture in the distal aspect of his right tibia, and he was quickly transferred to our Surgery Department. Our skilled surgical team stabilized his fracture with a bone plate, IM pin, and cerclage wire.

During recovery, Bruce faced another hurdle—he developed pneumonia and was moved to our Critical Care Department, where x-rays confirmed the diagnosis. Bloodwork also showed a drop in his white blood cell count. To help him heal, Bruce was placed on nasal oxygen and started on antibiotics. When his condition worsened, he required HiFlow oxygen support. After 10 days in the hospital Bruce's care team felt comfortable sending him home as he was no longer oxygen dependant.

Through all the ups and downs, Bruce fought hard, and today, we’re happy to share that he is back home with his loving family! 🏡🐶💕

We are so grateful to have been part of Bruce’s journey. Thank you for entrusting us with his care!

Over three years ago, Sedona’s world changed in an instant—she suddenly couldn’t walk. Her family rushed her to Portsmouth Vet Clinic, where they quickly contacted OSVS for an emergency referral. Without hesitation, Sedona’s owner brought her straight to us, hoping for answers.

That weekend, Dr. Cellini was on duty. Given Sedona’s acute pelvic limb paralysis and back pain, our team immediately performed an MRI, which confirmed a severe spinal cord compression due to an L2-3 right-sided intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH). Without delay, we prepared Sedona for surgery that very afternoon.

The procedure went smoothly, and we successfully removed a large amount of herniated disc material. After a few days in our care, Sedona went home with a sling to assist her as she regained mobility. Through dedicated aqua therapy and at-home physical therapy, she defied the odds—within just a few weeks, she was walking again!

Fast forward to today, and Sedona is back to running, playing, and living her best life!

🎉 Seeing her happy and healthy makes our entire team so proud. We LOVE pup-dates like this—nothing brings us more joy than witnessing our patients thrive! 💙🐶

🎉Maggie is Home! 🎉

After 18 days in our ICU, Maggie has finally gone home!

Her journey has been nothing short of incredible. Over several weeks, Maggie’s appetite declined, she became increasingly lethargic, and she experienced intermittent vomiting. When she arrived, our team discovered elevated kidney values and a decreased red blood cell count, prompting further investigation.

Maggie underwent multiple surgeries, including a resection and anastomosis for a jejunal mass with an associated intussusception. Histopathology revealed a malignant spindle cell tumor with suppurative inflammation and granulation tissue—which came back as leiomyosarcoma.

On Day 13 post-op, she required an abdominal exploratory surgery for a pancreatic abscess. Throughout her hospitalization, she received pRBC and FFP transfusions to aid her recovery. As if that wasn’t enough, she also underwent the surgical removal of a large encapsulated intramuscular lipoma in her right abdominal wall. This girl couldn’t catch a break!

But through it all, Maggie fought like a warrior. Thanks to her incredible strength and the dedication of our ICU and surgery teams, she’s finally back where she belongs—with her loving family!

We are beyond proud of Maggie and wish her a smooth, happy recovery! Let’s hear it for this resilient girl!

🍫🐶 The Dangers of Chocolate for Dogs: What You Need to Know

Sweet Roxy had a scary day after indulging in some dark chocolate. She was experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, and an elevated heart rate, all classic signs of chocolate toxicity. Roxy was admitted to the hospital, where she received IV fluid therapy, GI medications, and supportive care to help her recover. Thanks to prompt treatment, Roxy is on the mend and feeling much better! Did you know that chocolate contains substances like theobromine, caffeine, and methylxanthine, which are toxic to dogs? The effects of chocolate toxicity depend on the type of chocolate, the amount consumed, and the size of your pup.

Here’s what to watch for:

Mild symptoms (low doses): Vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.
Severe symptoms (higher doses): Anxiety, rapid heart rate, heart rhythm issues, tremors, or seizures.
Pancreatitis risk: Due to chocolate’s high fat content, some dogs may develop pancreatitis days after ingestion, leading to nausea, vomiting, and lethargy.

🚨 What to do if your dog eats chocolate:
Treatment varies based on the amount ingested. If caught early, vomiting may be induced. For mild cases, outpatient therapy may suffice, but severe cases often require hospitalization, IV fluids, anti-anxiety meds, anti-arrhythmics, and gastrointestinal support.

Prevention is key! Keep all chocolate out of reach, and if your dog sneaks a bite, don’t wait—contact us immediately.

🚨 Meet Nala Maria! 🚨

On New Year’s Eve, sweet Nala Maria experienced a traumatic accident and was hit by a car. She was rushed to our sister hospital, Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS), where she arrived anemic due to blood loss. She had a large bruise on the side of her chest and internal bleeding within her chest. Nala required plasma and red blood cell transfusions along with supplemental oxygen, IV fluids, and pain relievers to stabilize her condition. She initially had a severely elevated liver value from her trauma, this returned to normal during her recovery. Despite resolution of her anemia and liver injury, Nala continued to have difficulty breathing during her hospitalization. Upon further evaluation and X-rays, it was discovered she had a diaphragmatic hernia, where her abdominal organs had shifted into her chest through a tear in the diaphragm caused by her trauma.

Nala Maria was transferred to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS), where our surgical team stepped in to perform life saving surgery. During surgery, her liver and spleen were repositioned back into her abdomen, and the hernia was successfully repaired. A temporary chest tube was placed to remove any residual air or fluid caused by the hernia and surgery.

Nala Maria spent several days in our ICU, where she received around-the-clock care to monitor her progress. We’re thrilled to share that Nala is now breathing comfortably, recovering smoothly, back home, and on her way to feeling her best! 💕

Please join us in wishing Nala Maria a continued recovery as she heals from this incredible journey!

*Intensive care in the ICU for multiple days and emergency surgery carries a significant financial cost, thankfully Nala's owner had pet insurance for her to help offset these bills. We strongly recommend pet insurance for the majority of our pet population to help with unexpected emergencies.

Kelsey and Becca visited OSVS today with Miss Emi for an appointment with Dr. Marini. Both Kelsey and Becca are part of our sister hospital team at Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services, where they serve as ICU/ER and surgery technicians as well as technician managers. Emi has been experiencing some neck pain, so she was referred to our Neurology team. We’re happy to share that Emi looked great during her exam today!

We love being so close to our sister hospital—it’s such a benefit in situations like this! Even though we’re in different states, the 30-minute drive makes collaboration seamless and allows us to provide the best possible care for patients like Emi. 💙

Honey’s Road to Recovery 🍯

Honey had an unfortunate accident that brought her to our emergency room, where she was diagnosed with a right caudal mandibular fracture and left eye proptosis. Honey did wonderfully during her hospitalization and has been such a brave patient! She underwent general anesthesia to repair her right mandibular fracture, which was stabilized using a wire. To further support the wire and ensure proper alignment of her upper and lower teeth as she heals, a BEARD (subcutaneous muzzle) was placed.

In addition to addressing her jaw, Honey also had an enucleation of her left eye. She is now on the mend, and we are so proud of how well she has handled everything so far. Sending her lots of love as she continues to recover!
