Welcome to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists
We have technological abilities here at OSVS that exist no where else in Rhode Island and exist in only a few places around the country. We are high tech, but the people who work here when you get down to it are just doing it for the animals.
We LOVE our patients and we hope you feel that when you walk through our doors. We truly care about our patients and clients and are here to be a resource for you and your loved ones. At OSVS you are not just a medical number, you are part of our family.

Winnie's story
Mary and her daughter went to an event Rhode Home Rescue was hosting and they instantly fell in love with Winnie's sweet temperament. Winnie was adopted from Rhode Home Rescue in October after Mary and her family lost their precious Yorkie a year before. It wasn’t long before she was settled in, playing and being a feisty little pup. Winnie now spends her days going in to work with Mary at the tax office. At night Winnie sleeps with Mary’s daughter under the covers. Winnie was fitting into their family perfectly! Unfortunately, Winnie loves to eat everything in sight. Winnie turned one on April 30th and even though she was growing up she was still mischievous, as ever. One day Mary went to run some errands and her son called while she was out, Winnie had gotten into a bin that contained a pill bottle of Baclofen and she was lethargic on the couch. When Winnie’s owner got home, she was foaming at the mouth and howling. Mary, her daughter, and her son were so scared, they thought she was passing away in their arms. When Winnie’s owners called OSVS we were at capacity. Mary had brought their Yorkie into us before and she knew that if anyone could save her it would be OSVS. So she proceeded to drive to our emergency room and when they arrived our staff saw how lifeless Winnie was, we took her into our care immediately. Baclofen is a powerful muscle relaxant that affects the brain and muscles directly. It can cause respiratory depression or failure by affecting the diaphragm. Winnie had ingested 12 Baclofen which is well over the toxic dose. Winnie was on a ventilator and a CPAP machine. She was monitored 24/7 throughout her stay by our skilled doctors, nurses, and emergency staff. After three long days filled with TLC, Winnie was able to go home to her family. It was so evident that she was so loved by our staff, her calm and sweet demeanor won us over! We sent her home with newly acquired toys and so many hugs!

Bella's discharge
Bella was brought home from the vet after being spayed and quickly her owners knew something was not right. When Bella walked across the floor her legs would collapse, she was lethargic and very very sick. Her owners knew something was terribly wrong. Someone suggested that they bring Bella to OSVS for an evaluation.
When they brought Bella in, they were given the choice to put her to sleep or operate because she was that sick from the spay gone wrong. Bella’s owners loved her and did not want to lose their girl so they decided to operate. The next morning, after the operation, they received a call from OSVS and were told Bella had some sort of leaking going on in her abdomen and that they would have to operate again but it would be very dangerous because she already had two operations in a short amount of time. After the second operation, they were told that one of Bella’s kidneys had to be removed and that the other one was not functioning at one hundred percent. Again, they were scared that she might not make it... but Dr. Hallowell and our staff stayed with Bella and helped her heal day after day feeding tube and all. When Bella’s owners first came to visit her, they were scared because she was connected to all kinds of tubes and was extremely lethargic.
Then one day, they were in the waiting room waiting to see Bella ... and were shocked to see her run into the room on her own for the first time since the operations! Bella was back!
Bella was hospitalized at OSVS for over 30 days.
Finally, one day Dr. Hallowell said, she is well enough to go home with a feeding tube. Bella’s parents were so excited that she could spend Christmas at home. When they came to pick Bella up, we asked her owners to take her out the back door not knowing the entire staff was waiting to say goodbye all cheering “Bella, Bella, Bella!!!” Bella’s owners had tears in their eyes, overjoyed with emotion and so happy that Bella had made so many friends.
