So, this morning (2 am to be exact) one of my client's dogs decided it was a good time to play with a black and white kitty.
Needless to say, it didn't end well for the dog. 🤢

She brought her in this morning, and we got her cleaned up, but it got me thinking. Most people know the basic of what to do in the case of a skunked dog, but for those that don't I wanted to give a few tips.

1. First thing you want to do if you know your dog just got skunked is grab some paper towels and start dabbing the dog. You want to soak up as much of that oil as possible. (I recommend wearing gloves to keep the oil from soaking into you)

2. If you're not able to get somewhere to bath them and you have to bath them at home. Here is a simple recipe you can do at home.

1 Quart Peroxide
1 Tablespoon Dawn Dish Soap
1/4 cup Baking Soda

Mix it all together and sponge it over the dog (be careful not to get it in their eyes) I were gloves when doing this as well.

3. If the dog got a full-frontal attack use vanilla extract on their nose. It helps cover the smell and is not toxic if the dog licks it.

Here at the shop I use a 4-step process.

First, I use a special degreaser to help pull the oil from the coat. They soak in that for 5 minutes, then I do a de skunk wash (the recipe from above) then I do a normal wash and then finish up with a conditioner as the peroxide can be hard on their hair. If the dog is a dog that normally gets its haircut, I recommend a grooming as well as removing as much of the tainted hair as possible definitely helps.

Just about halfway done!

Big houses are great till you have to deep clean 😏

But I will prevail and not one germ will survive!

I wanted to give everyone an update on our kennel cough situation.
I had to take our one dog to the vet yesterday (something unrelated to kennel cough), but while I was there, I discussed with her the situation with the shop and how long to wait and how to reopen safely.

So good news is I don't have to stay shut down as long as "Dr. Google" had said.

My vet told me that they are only contagious for 10 - 14 days after symptoms start. Since Toad took his sweet old time contracting this, this puts me at Sunday for our last start up so we will be in the clear on June 9th.

Before I reopen, I want to do a deep clean on the house and shop. I want to make sure to kill any germs that might still be lingering around.

So, our official reopen date will be Thursday, June 13th, 🥳

We will be doing an evening nails this month as well. The new date will be Thursday June 20th.

Anyone who would like to get appointments set up your more than welcome to give me a call before we official reopen if you'd like.

Also, I've had many people asking me how the dogs contracted kennel cough. I want to ease everyone's mind and assure you it was not a sick dog coming into the shop.
We've found that it actually came from a dog we had visited a few days prier and we had brought the virus home on our clothes to our dogs.

I want to thank everyone for being so patient and understanding while I worked through this mess.

ATTENTION ALL CUSTOMERS

The groom shop is closed starting today till the beginning of July.
Two of my pups have unfortunately contracted kennel cough ☹️

We've never delt with this before but from what I've read their symptoms can last 1 - 3 week during which they are obviously contagious and then they are still contagious for 2 -3 weeks after symptoms stop. So, hopping for only a week of symptom.

They started showing symptoms last night, all customers who came in yesterday have been notified and we are praying their pups don't get it.

Anyone who has an appointment set up for June I will be calling you starting Tuesday to get you rescheduled if you'd like or if you want to take your dog elsewhere till we're through this mess I completely understand.

I am so sorry for the inconvenience.

Once the dogs are symptom free and we've done a massive deep clean on the house we will reopen.

Again, so sorry for this inconvenience.

My old girl Snickers came in this morning 🩷
She's a new old client. She use to come here back before I had closed the shop, she saw I had reopened and now she's back.
A good bit older, but still a cutie 🥰

Not quite sure what he is.
He was a rescue and I'm thinking this might have been his first grooming.
He was crazy and excited through the whole thing but did do very well 🙂

She's a goldendoodle, not quite full sized, but also not quite a mini.
She had the most unique black spot on her back.
She was a very good girl today ♥️ even though she did have a bit of spark in her for her front legs 😏
