There is no reason whatsoever that you can’t use an OTTB as a backyard pleasure horse, and never even THINK about any sort of competition, if that’s your deal.

These two, Tense and Frosty Lover, between them, raced 50 times and earned $68,000. And they were happy as clams schlepping around on the buckle like a pair of old Quarter Horses.

Don’t be put off by the stereotype that Thoroughbreds are hot and aggressive. Some are, many aren’t. But much of that has to do with whether they got trained nicely, or got hammered around by someone, and even if a horse did get bad treatment, so often it can completely recover when a good person replaces the bad one.
