After a long day of working on clients horses hustling to squeeze every horse in for one day. To come home to slow down take my sweet time working on rehab horses I have at the house can be the most relaxing part of my day. I love my job.

Side note this is day one with rehabbing this sweet mare at the house. I can’t wait to see how she recovers.

Left is before Arrow B Therapy worked on her right is after.

The before on this mare are amazing. She is currently at the farm for rehab on her leg.

She had cellulitis in her back left hind leg all the way past her stifle. We are left currently with a little swelling in her fetlock.

A recent study has shown ground poles at the walk increase muscle activity in both the longissimus dorsi (major back muscle group running along the spine) and the abdominal muscles. Ground poles at the trot increase muscle activity of the abdominal muscles. This confirms what we have often recommended, that cavaletti poles will increase strength and stability of the topline and abdominal muscles.

If you are setting up a sequential row of ground poles, which incidentally is a good place to start, place your poles approx. 2.5 feet apart for walking, 4 feet apart for trotting, and 9-11 feet apart of cantering. For most gaited horses, in lieu of trotting, space the poles 8 feet apart for your lateral gait.

Tuesday tip - Backing up

This is a low-impact exercise with no moment of suspension. It can be done in-hand and ridden, and your horse should move his limbs in diagonal pairs.

Performed well, it requires your horse to carry more weight on his hindquarters, and maintain increased hindlimb, lumbosacral and back joint flexion throughout the stride cycle.

Executed correctly with relaxation, impulsion and with the head lowered, the movement increases the throacic vertebral rotation, encourages core recruitment of the abdominals , thoracic sling and hip flexors. It also contributes to back mobility, the ability to collect and good posture.

For maximum benefit ask your horse to back up in-hand daily. Start with 1 or 2 steps and progress to 20 steps. The aim is good quality, long, marching steps.

I had a few people ask me about my new cyro machine here is a short explanation… With cyro the treatment time is very fast, it’s 30 seconds to one minute per area. The outcome outlasts, by far, any other type of cold treatment. It’s better than an ice bath, it’s better than ice packs, because it blows carbon dioxide at -110 degrees Farenheit on the body. Most people often do for preventative treatment is to treat the suspensory, as this is one of the main causes of lameness in sport horses.
