Wonderful description of the connection between horse & human ❤️🐴

I went to the barn early this morning. The dark was thick, the stream in the woods overflowing, and stars letting me know the clouds were receding.

All was dark in the barn; the home of the horses was still nestled within a blanket of night. Both had come in last night due to the rain. I walked in with care, softly announcing myself. I could hear the night sounds of horses — subtle movements of feet, light puffs of breathing. Coaly stood up from lying down, I could feel his eyes waking and his interest in why I had come. Rocky slightly stirred as well, then settled. I walked to his stall, looked in, my eyes trying to find him in the dark but couldn’t. Then I heard him lightly breathe. He was lying down.

“Oh, it’s you. Hi,” he seemed to say. Then he settled back into his rest. He was still in the night world in mind and body and dream. I closed my eyes and leaned against his stall and felt perfect there, light and rooted, where I was supposed to be, feeling so relaxed, peaceful, and wholly alive. Hearing him relaxed and peaceful and wholly alive. And I slowed my breathing, and all thought drifted away, becoming a zero-point of just being and loving.

Soon I found my breath syncing with his, a calm and steady breath in and then a release of a puff of breath out, pause, and then letting another calm breath in. So effortless, so surrendered, so trusted. The night sounds joined us—an owl, Coaly licking and chewing, a rooster in the distance. Rock’s breathing, my breathing. And within this I felt him, the truth of him, who he was and how he was feeling, what he needed in life if anything. He was giving me the gift of open-ness.

I slowed my breathing and the most amazing thing happened — he slowed his as well. I was giving him the gift of my open-ness just like he did, and he was accepting.

After about half an hour he stood up and with my eyes still closed I heard him step over to me and place his head beside mine. I felt his breath on my face like a caring whisper. A thousand pound animal as light as a feather inches away from me.

Relaxed and peaceful and wholly alive. And I realized that healing is a natural by-product of remembering this wholly aliveness, this love for life and who we are, and sharing that love with those around us.

🐴 Meet Our Trail Team 🐴

This is Mina 😍

She is a 13 year old Tennessee Walker that was at a rescue in Mississippi. She had a foal at the time and was pregnant again!

She stands about 15hands and has a beautiful red shine to her coat.
She is very easy to catch & comes to you in the field. She is gaited & ridden on most of our trail rides.
Her one negative is her tendency to want to be the BOSS mare in our pastures when not on the trail 😂

For this reason, Mina will be retiring from LOTO Trail rides and is looking for a new home were she can enjoy a smaller herd (maybe just one friend) and continue her love of giving rides & enjoying the trails 👍🏼🐴❤️

If you know somebody that would love to meet Mina and see if they connect, please contact us.

The Holes We Could Step In...

Yesterday I posted a video of loping horses in a big field that was covered in tall grass. It received a bunch of comments from people concerned about holes from foxes, gophers etc and how that would keep them from loping and maybe even from riding there.

I can understand and even share their concern, to a point. We sure need to do our part to keep our horses intrusted to us safe and sound. However, let me relate a story that took place a few years ago.

I took my son Cody, who was about ten at the time, with me to visit my brother Levi in Montana where he was cowboying. We were all able to ride as a crew, with the ranch hands, one day to round up a few thousand acre pasture in preparation for weaning of the roughly one hundred cow calf pairs that were in that pasture.

Well it was a couple mile long trot to the back of the pasture. Not far into the trip out I noticed a large prarie dog town ahead of us that we were headed straight for. I was curious to see how this was going to be handled by the forman of the crew and by the rest the cowboys and their horses for that matter.

As we reached the point it was clear we weren't going around to avoid the hundreds of holes in the ground left by the noisy chatter box rodents I atleast thought we would slow to a walk. That didn't happen either. Every man just put his hand down, never breaking stride, allowing the horses to navigate where they placed each of their feet without the micromanagement of the riders.

Not one of the seven horses stepped a single one of their twenty eight feet in a hole! Each of them figured out how to manage each of their own four feet without help. Not only did this happen once, but we crossed and additional two prarie dog towns before reaching our destination.

I learned a valuable lesson that day that I have carried forward. We tend to ride worrying about all the things that could go wrong that we often lose sight of what could and is going right. Yes we could step in a hole, our horse could take a misstep. But truth be told, honestly, contrary to what we think, not much can be done in life to prevent some things. We just need to learn to trust that the horse is competent to handle the things they need to handle.

These same ideas can certainly be carried to parenting and just life in general. If we do everything for our children, we will always have to do it all for them. If we try to control everything in life, we will at best get burned out.
Instead I am choosing to control what is mine to own and then not worry about all the rest.

Bad things happen in life. But I am learning to usually just put my hand down and ride...
