Xylitol, also known as Birch Sugar, is extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure, or even death in dogs.
Itโs in so many things like toothpaste, gum, baked goods, gummy vitamins & medications. It can also be found in certain brands of peanut butter, which so many of us use to give medications to our dogs. Itโs extremely important to read product labels before giving anything to your dog. Symptoms can include, vomiting, tremors, lack of coordination, and seizures.
What if your dog accidentally ingests xylitol? It is crucial to seek medical attention immediately, even if your dog has not shown any symptoms yet. There is no antidote but the sooner your vet can offer help, the better the outcome. If you must keep items in your home that contain xylitol, keep them locked up & away from your dog, like you would anything else toxic.
We use peanut butter that DOES NOT contain xylitol.
