So thrilled to announce that Indecent Behavior left for his new home yesterday, though really we could almost say he returned home! He was adopted by Carly who worked with him as a foal and up until he was sold originally by his breeder. As many horses as she's worked with, this one was special and she tracked him through retirement and was quick to start the adoption process.

Such an awesome reunion. Congrats to you both!

Happy Holidays from all of us at After the Races! Hope everyone is warm and happy wherever this finds you.

After the Races is so incredibly thrilled to announce that after one insanely long and crazy year, we have officially closed on a new and forever home for ATR! There's been a lot of ups and downs and delays and we have to thank the seller for seeing things through with us when many people would have moved on.

ATR will be staying local, in fact moving even closer to Fair Hill, and we hope this property will grow to become everything we need it to be as we continue in our mission of rehabilitating and rehoming retired Thoroughbred racehorses while promoting the usefulness and versatility of the breed beyond racing.

We will be sending out more information soon via our newsletter so go to our website and sign up for that if you haven't already! Also if you would like to help us celebrate, I've added a donate button to this post for people to share their excitement through giving (even a few dollars, just lets us know you're as excited as we are)!

2024 has been one hell of a year, but we cannot thank all of our donors and supporters (and dedicated volunteers and staff) for helping us get through it. You kept the dream alive. You made this possible.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

What a perfectly timed update from adopter Nicole. She reports that Best Yes has settled in beautifully with her farm and family and that he was lovely for his little hack in the snow yesterday. We love seeing our horses doing so well and being so loved!

Hope everyone is staying warm, wherever they are.

Have you seen WalkOnTheWildSide?

Wally is a huge (almost 16.3), 2 year old, bay gelding that came to us in partnership with Beyond the Wire. He only raced one time and "wasn't going to be the next American Pharoah" so he is lucky to retire early and sound!

This handsome fella is by Golden Lad and out of a Milwaukee Brew mare. This means he has so many greats in his pedigree: Medaglia d'Oro, El Prado (IRE), Seeking the Gold, Wild Again, Mt Livermore, to name a few without going back too far!

WalkOnTheWildSide had a clean evaluation with our vet and is not expected to have any limitations. While he was perfectly sound for his intake evaluation, he has been tender footed since having his shoes pulled and getting TLC to help them toughen up. Absolutely should be no deterrent for anyone adopting a HUGE baby horse who needs time to finish growing up. That time can be used to let him develop great feet! The farrier says they're off to a great start.

Wally is currently turned out with a group of geldings. He's easy to catch and handle and very sweet. He has no vices and is submissive in the herd structure.

Priority will be given to an adoptive home willing to give him time to grow before going into full work as he's only two years old, and to someone with experience to bring a young, green racehorse along when he does return to work.

What's That is a 5 year old, 16.2 hand, dark bay gelding that came to us in partnership with Beyond the Wire in Maryland. He is unraced but was in training earlier this year. He is well bred, being by Great Notion and out of a Dance With Ravens mare. Worth looking up his pedigree as there are some greats in there!

He'd stopped racing in May due to a very minor tendon injury and by the time he came to ATR it had mostly healed! Our vet found him sound and her ultrasound showed the fiber pattern looking excellent. We gave him a bit more time off and graduate him to full turnout and he is now ready to go back to work without future limitations!

What's That has a cool personality. He enjoys making silly faces at people in the barn, and has been a gentleman to work with in the barn and has even largely ignores the farm dogs even when they're at their silliest running around. He was very kind to our companion pony Styx when they were turned out together, and is now turned out with 3 other geldings without issue.

So far we've only been able to work with What's That on the ground outside of a brief evaluation ride but he has been so easy to work with. He is eager to please and really looks to connect with his handler doing ground work and for just having one short ride in many months, he was happy to just bop around. He should prove very amateur friendly but is nice enough professionals and show homes should certainly still pay attention!

Weather and lack of an indoor this time of year prove difficult for us to get much (if any) riding done, but this guy is a steal for someone willing to restart a lovely horse themselves.

Did you know having good quality hay in front of a horse all winter essentially helps them stay warm from the inside? As this article puts it, it's like they have an "internal combustion" system!

Getting enough good quality hay to last the winter is VITAL to our ability to keep our horses not just comfortable, but thriving, all winter long.

You can make a difference by donating to our fundraiser on FB or on our website at the link in the comments.

Help kick-start your horse's furnace by providing proper fuel, particularly good-quality forage.
