Meet Sweet Pea, a name perfectly fitting for such a sweet soul.💛
This darling girl’s story is one of heartbreaking loss and resilience. At 15 years old, Sweet Pea is blind, deaf, and an orphan. Her world was shattered after losing her elderly mom to illness at the beginning of this year. Her mom had lovingly left cat care instructions for her husband, but unknown to many, he was suffering from Alzheimer's and unable to care for himself, let alone their three cats.💔
When Sweet Pea was finally discovered in the house in August, she was lying on her former mom’s bed😞, covered in f***s and urine, with significant hair loss, frail & emaciated. She went to a rescue with the other 2 cats, but her care & condition was quite unique, so the rescue asked for help.
Her journey to healing has been complex. She had suffered from severe diarrhea due to the parasite, giardia. More critically, she had undiagnosed hyperthyroidism, but the rest of her bloodwork was surprisingly fantastic. Hyperthyroidism can be devastating in cats, causing a poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and stress on the heart. The resulting hypertension (high blood pressure) from untreated hyperthyroidism is usually the culprit of retinal detachment, causing blindness. In time with proper thyroid meds & taurine supplements, sometimes the eyesight can return, but it’s uncertain how long her issues were left untreated, so the retinal detachment (blindness) may be permanent.🥺
But Sweet Pea’s spirit refused to be broken!💗 Once she started the proper thyroid medication and taurine supplements, her transformation began. Her appetite returned, she perked up, and her grooming habits returned. Through all the pain and confusion, she NEVER lost her ability to PURRRRRRRR so loud and enjoy the gentle touches of affection. One cannot deny this little lady was well-loved her whole life.
Though her world is now dark and silent, she is bravely learning to navigate it. She is mapping out her small room, coming out of her small crate to find the litter box before quickly returning to the comfort of her blankets. She finds security in this small "den," where the crate walls help her guide herself. She senses (smells!) when we walk in, immediately perking up for food or just some good, gentle rub-downs!🥰
She’s not alone on her journey! You may remember the abandoned mom and kittens we found during a hiking excursion? They are furtastic! Mama Chickpea, Bean, and Sprout have become her loving foster family. Bean and Sprout adore cuddling up to her. Little, shy Sprout has become her tiny protector, glaring at us when we reach in to pet her.😆 Mama Chickpea often gives Sweet Pea much-needed "biscuit massages." Sweet Pea cherishes their affection and cradles them in return.🥹
But this beautiful arrangement is temporary. Soon, the "Bean crew" will be ready for their own next chapter…a forever home, and darling Sweet Pea will need a home of her own to continue receiving love and proper care. She needs a calm, compassionate home for her golden years.
