The roots of Labor Day grew out of violent clashes between labor and police during the Haymarket Riot in 1886, when thousands of workers in Chicago took to the streets demanding an eight-hour workday. This event was pivotal in the labor movement, highlighting the struggles of workers for better conditions. Chicago was also central to the 1894 Pullman Palace Car Company strike, a major railway strike involving the American Railway Union that impacted labor rights nationwide. Labor Day became a national holiday shortly after this strike, signed into law by President Grover Cleveland, who also ordered federal troops to Chicago to quell unrest related to the strike. Chicago has a rich history of Labor Day parades and celebrations dating back to the 1880s, with tens of thousands of workers participating to show labor solidarity!
