Arapahoe County Animal Services is cautioning urban residents of an outbreak of raccoons suffering from canine distemper and asking residents to take precautions to prevent the spread.

Raccoons can acquire canine distemper, a viral disease that also infects foxes, coyotes, skunks, and unvaccinated dogs. The disease does not affect humans.

“Providing food sources may lead to unnaturally large concentrations of animals and increase the spread of disease,” Animal Services Field Supervisor Alyssa Haden said.

Residents should discourage raccoons from their property by feeding their pets indoors. If feeding occurs outdoors, bring in food and water bowls promptly after their pet has eaten.

Garbage cans should be secured with lids that can’t be knocked off or removed, and compost piles should be covered in bins that raccoons can’t access.

The disease is spread when animals have direct contact with body fluids or droppings from an infected animal. Distemper is always present in the environment, so the best prevention for dogs is to make sure they are vaccinated. Contact your veterinarian to make sure your dog’s shots are current.

Symptoms may include discharge from the nose and eyes, a rough coat of hair, emaciated appearance and unusual behavior such as disorientation or wandering aimlessly. Symptoms become progressively worse and is usually fatal.

Keep children and pets away from sick raccoons. As the disease progresses, the animal may appear calm but can become aggressive if approached.

Contact Colorado Parks and Wildlife at 303-291-7227 for additional information or any other wildlife concerns.

What a fantastic day at the fund match! So many came out to support Scarlatti’s care and some specified $$ to the car repair too!

Thank you Lauren Sanchez-Susman and Jacqueline Sanchez Susman for hosting, Sean and Deborah Szymanski for handling the auction, thanks to all that came out to play and all that bought all the liquor ( I mean auction items). Thank you everyone who donated $$ and auction items.
And thanks to those who volunteered, you guys were amazing.
It’s a beautiful day to play. Scarlatti and I are humbled by your generosity ❤️

Multiple cases of Strep Zoo at the Colorado Springs animal shelter. They have a robust plan in place to ensure that they contain this bacterium that impacts dogs.

In many cases, dogs pass away from this infection, however, they have not experienced this.

Streptococcus Equi Subsp Zooepidemicus, also known as Strep Zoo, is a bacterium that is commonly found in horses, cattle, and pigs and rarely causes disease in these animals. Because it is zoonotic, it can be transmitted between animal species and (rarely) humans. When it affects dogs, it is highly contagious and can cause severe respiratory disease. It is a relatively new pathogen present in animal shelters and there are still many things they do not know about this bacterium.

Strep zoo is transmitted primarily by direct contact, contact with contaminated fomites and by inhalation. It can also be spread during the sanitation process and survives in wet environments.

This bacterium is effectively killed by deep cleaning, scrubbing, and power washing surfaces.

We encourage everyone to visit Prevent Pet Suffocation! It's really opened our eyes to the risk of suffocation that chip bags and other food waste products posed to our pets. The stories are heartbreaking! A tiny bit of extra effort when disposing of food waste products can be life-saving for the pets we love.

What an amazing day. Stepping back into the ring after everything Scarlatti has gone through the past two months was indescribable. We walked in the building and she saw the agility rings and looked up at me with a huge smile on her face. She was SO happy.
She ran like a champ and double Q’d with two second places. We missed finals by one- I’m ok with that. I got to run my 11.5 year old best girl who was diagnosed with cancer two months ago, two surgeries and in the middle of treatment . We have never done Westminster and it was something that I wanted us to experience. She handled everything so well.
I love her to the moon and back and maybe more.❤️
Now we’re researching how we’re going to get home with storms and a bad transmission.😳
