Ellis County Sheriff's Office, SPCA of Texas Host Free Pet Vaccine Clinic

WHAT: In partnership with the Ellis County Sheriff's Office, the SPCA of Texas is hosting a free pet vaccination clinic, with rabies, DAPP and FVRCP vaccinations plus microchips, all donated by Merck and Petco Love, to help curb the spread of preventable diseases and illnesses in pets living in Ellis County. The free vaccines are made possible through Merck and Petco Love's national vaccination initiative, which is providing 1 million free pet vaccines to its existing animal welfare partners, including the SPCA of Texas, for family pets in need.

“Thanks to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office for their partnership and to Merck and Petco Love for their sponsorship, we can offer these important vaccines at no cost to pet owners,” said Karen Froehlich, SPCA of Texas President and CEO. “We urge community members to take advantage of this free resource to ensure the health and wellness of our community’s pets.”

WHY: Parvovirus and distemper in dogs, and panleukopenia in cats, are some of the most prevalent deadly diseases impacting pets that are preventable with a simple vaccine. An estimated 30% of pet parents do not take their pet to a veterinarian annually for preventative care.

To address this critical need, the Ellis County Sheriff's Office, the SPCA of Texas, Merck and Petco Love are partnering to make pet vaccines free and accessible in an effort to ensure the health and wellness of the community's beloved pets.

The SPCA of Texas aims to vaccinate 200 pets at the event, which will help prevent the spread of disease in Ellis County communities.

HOW: The vaccination clinic is open to the public and is first-come, first-served. Free vaccines and services for dogs include DAPPv, rabies, bordetella and microchip. Free vaccines and services for cats include FVRCP, rabies, bordetella and microchip. This free vaccination clinic is funded by Merck and Petco Love and are only available to pets and people living in Ellis County.

Broken puppy update! Her name while she’s at the ranchito will be Sunny Z 🌞 Today was her follow-up exam at the vet. Based on how well Sunny had been doing this week I was cautiously optimistic we would be continuing her treatment, so I removed her soiled splint to bathe her and get her all fresh for a new splint. At the vet office everyone agreed she had improved; she has control of her bladder and bowel, is able to stand on her unaffected side, and best of all she’s happy 😁 This means we are moving forward with weekly splint changes until the vet is confident she is ready for surgery. We are a little concerned because Sunny developed a pretty large seroma in the area of her trauma that they had to drain. We checked her hematocrit just to make sure this isn’t anything to be super concerned about. Her hematocrit was a tad low so we’ll be monitoring her until her checkup next week. If anything changes we’ll take her back to the vet sooner! Otherwise, Sunny was the perfect angel patient and got a new splint. Purple this time 💅🏽 Sunny has gained a little weight which is good but we’re adding supplements to improve her overall condition. Topped everything off with her puppy vaccinations, a nail trim, ear cleaning and some new medications. We got this Sunny Z! Please continue to send her all your healing power ⚡️

Two former Texans goofing off while they wait for their furever families. Marshmallow, the black and white with the big smile on her face, was so sick at the shelter that she had to been given until the end of the day to be rescued. It's Ruff Without a Roof committed to helping her and Nava Dog assisted by getting her to the emergency clinic where she stayed for several days to treat her pneumonia. When Marshmallow was well enough to leave the ER she recuperated at the ranchito until she headed north. Seeing that big smile on her face is everything 💖

Aimee’s head tilts 10/10. We’ve partnered with It's Ruff Without a Roof to help Aimee. Aimee found herself at Dallas Animal Services after being hit by a car. Aimee needed more medical help than the shelter could provide and she needed immediate help. That’s when IRWAR stepped up and said they would take responsibility for Aimee. Nava Dog assisted by getting Aimee to our Texas vet where she has already had one surgery, and still needs two more. Maybe three. This is rescue. It truly takes a village.

We are a Texas-based organization and know some within the Texas dog rescue community have been directly affected by this tragedy. Two foster kittens are better than one 😁 Delilah (black & white) and latest foster kitten Smokey (camouflaged against the gray) are official BFFs. It took a day but now they’re playing and snuggling together. Best news is now that Delilah has a friend she isn’t constantly crying for attention anymore 👍 These kiddos will be available for adoption through Dallas Animal Services in about three weeks. When you go to the vet and come home with a bonus pup who’s not vaccinated yet. This baby floof was hit by a car and taken to the vet for euthanasia. I happened to be there so she was surrendered instead and now she can have a chance. She has a broken right rear leg and broken pelvis. Unsure of any unseen damage, we have to make sure she can p*e and p**p on her own. Whatever your method, this baby need prayers, blessings, vibes, etc. . . Accepting name suggestions too

Kitten season is in full swing and shelters are overflowing with underage kittens in need of foster homes. Nava Dog is fostering this little bean for Dallas Animal Services. Her name is Delilah and she was found alone in the community and wasn’t wanting to eat at the shelter. Happy to report that Delilah is now munching down on her food. Sheba wants to be your BFF. A Good Samaritan found Sheba three weeks ago, and has been caring for her while trying to locate her owner. Unfortunately, Sheba wasn’t microchipped and no one has come forward for her. Sheba’s Good Samaritan loves her and would keep her but can’t because they are at their pet limit. So, we are on a mission to help find a home for Sheba and her the stunning eyes. Sheba is about 1-2 years old, 40 pounds and house trained. Sheba is a well behaved and smart girl that has already learned sit. Sheba’s favorite thing to do is to be with her person and she def does well with school aged children. Sheba L-O-V-E-S car rides. Sheba is working with her Good Samaritan on crate training and overcoming some separation anxiety. Sheba even gets to go to work with her Good Samaritan where she is perfectly well behaved. There are two high energy resident dogs in the Good Samaritan’s home that Sheba tolerates but prefers that they keep their nonsense to themselves 😉 Sheba might be a bit shy when she first meets new people, but warms up quickly and is a very sweet girl that just wants to please. It’s been a week since this perfectly imperfect little lady was found. Her snaggletooth is everything! We have done our due diligence to locate an owner but no one has come forward. Honestly, we didn’t really expect one to because it appeared she had been intentionally left to be found. If her person is out there and sees this, please know she is loved, being cared for until she is placed in a great home. We are calling her Porcha. She has been fully vaccinated, checked for heartworms (she’s negative 😁), and she’ll be spayed next week. When she’s cleared for travel she’ll be heading to our Badass friends who are experts at finding amazing homes for our Nava dogs 💖

🚨LEGISLATION UPDATE: Today, the Dallas City Council passed the MONUMENTAL humane ordinance related to animal welfare! THLN and The Humane Society of the United States has been diligently working with the city on the ordinances to address many challenges regarding animal sheltering and animals in the field.

This ordinance will prohibit the sale of puppies and kittens in pet stores, prevent cruel breeding practices, close the puppy mill pipeline to Dallas and protect unsuspecting families from deceptive financial practices along with the other major Texas cities with this ordinance. This ordinance will support animal welfare organizations and change the landscape of animal welfare in Texas!

‘On that fateful Tuesday, sales director Michael Hingson, blind since birth, arrived for work on the 78th floor of the World Trade Center’s Tower One. Hingson’s guide dog, Roselle, settled into her usual post beneath the desk.

At 8:45 a.m., a hijacked jetliner crashed into the tower 18 floors above Hingson. After calling his wife, Karen, and making sure his staff was evacuated, they began their hellish descent down 78 flights of stairs.

Roselle led the way for Hingson and 30 others, spiraling down the emergency stairs, working methodically through smoke, debris, and fleeing office workers, they made it to the lobby. By the time they reached the sidewalk, Tower Two had been struck and was collapsing. “It sounded like a metal and concrete waterfall,” Hingson said. They ran for shelter down a subway entrance.

They emerged from underground as Tower One fell, raining down ash and debris. Roselle led Hingson some 40 blocks to a friend’s apartment and safety.’

For her heroic behavior Roselle received the Canine Excellence Award (ACE) in the guide dog category in 2002. She died in June 2011, aged 14, with Michael and Karen Hingson at her side.
