Anyone remember that video we posted a few months ago of an ultrasound showing a puppy heartbeat?

Well, here are those Cesky Fousek puppies just before they went to their new homes! They were fully examined, received their first shots, as well as medications for flea, tick, heartworm, and deworming. They did great during their blood draws for genetic testing too.

We’re seeing and pulling cheat grass out of pets every day. This one worked its way an inch under the skin between a pup’s toes.

Be sure to check your dog’s feet and ears after walks! If your pet is shaking its head or limping, don’t wait to get it checked out.

A few days ago we had a successful foreign body removal from the cornea. This pup will hopefully feel a lot better in a few days without this piece of cheat grass (or some other type of plant material) in its eye!

P.S. - This was removed under sedation with a topical numbing agent applied to the eye since scratches and foreign bodies on the eye are very painful. Don’t try this at home!

There’s nothing tougher than a working border collie!

Last week we treated a young border collie after a traumatic puncture to the chest that occurred sometime while she was out working cattle. Her chest cavity had filled with blood and her lungs on the left side had collapsed. We drained the blood off, transfused her with her own blood to help prevent life-threatening blood loss, and went to surgery to repair the wound on her chest. Even when she could barely sit up she was still wagging her tail when she saw a horse trailer drive by ❤️

After a few days of intensive care in the hospital and a lot of TLC at home, she looks like she’s going to pull through! The EAH team was thrilled to see her for her recheck x-rays.

Congratulations to Ella on a beautiful litter of Cesky Fousek puppies!

We’ve had the pleasure of providing veterinary care for Ella through the whole process including multiple progesterone tests to time her ovulation, diagnostic ultrasounds to confirm pregnancy, nutrition consults, puppy count radiographs, and now caring for the puppies!

Our team loves a basket of kittens ❤️

Unfortunately, as most of the locals know, our county has a ton of feral cats! We’re trying to help address this problem with our first spay and neuter clinic on May 23rd.

In order to offer more spay and neuter clinics this fall and next spring, we need at least 6 females (and as many tom cats as possible) to be brought in. So please, help us help the county and bring in your barn cats!

It was all fun and games until cute little Sally ate the rubber chicken 😅

Her owner knew it was better to be safe than sorry and brought Sally down right away. It’s unlikely that this toy was going to pass through her intestines (and if it got stuck in there we would have to do an emergency surgery), so we tried to make Sally vomit.

Thankfully, it all came up!

A creepy crawly reminder that the ticks are out and biting!
A couple weeks ago we diagnosed a dog with Lyme disease. This tick-borne illness is no joke! While we don’t have a lot of tick-borne illnesses in the county right now, there’s a good chance that we’ll start seeing more over the next few years.
So please - get your pet on a tick preventative from spring until fall. Especially if you travel with your pets to the coast, down south, or back east!
Edit: We also saw a case of tick paralysis this past month as well!

Marrow bones - dogs love them and sometimes we hate them 😅 this one was stuck all the way behind both lower canines. Dr. Younggren applied gentle pressure and wiggled it off under sedation but we had the saw ready just in case!

We’re already seeing a LOT of ticks on dogs!
We usually recommend tick preventatives from spring until late fall because ticks carry a lot of diseases that they can give to dogs and people. Also, they’re just gross, right?!

We surprised Cheri with a retirement party at M. Crow last night. She has spent many years helping animals in Wallowa County and while we’re sad to see her go, we know that she deserves all the adventures coming her way! If you see her out and about, be sure to give her a big congratulations 🎉

And just like that we’re headed into Equine Dental Month!
A healthy mouth is a huge factor contributing to a horse’s overall health. Due to high demand, we are starting dental month on March 15th. Give us a call to schedule before Dr. Grover is booked out!
Photo #3 shows an older pony with equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EORTH). These teeth are infected, painful, and make it hard for her to grab feed and eat appropriately. She was constantly tossing her head.
Photo #4 shows the same pony after extractions. The gums will heal and in a couple weeks she’ll be back for a routine float to improve alignment in her mouth. She’ll be in less pain, able to grab food easier, and hopefully be more comfortable with a bit in her mouth!

Does your dog have a lipoma? These are tumors made of adipose tissue - aka, fat! They’re typically benign, or non-cancerous.
Ever wondered when these tumors should be surgically removed? Here are a few guidelines.
1) If they are in the armpit or groin. They can become large enough to cause pain and impact walking. There are also BIG blood vessels and nerves in these areas and lipomas can wrap around these important structures.
2) If they are bothering the pet or dragging!
3) If they are fast growing.
Here is a great example!
Photo #1: This dog needed an emergency surgery to remove his lipoma after it had started bleeding. He had this lipoma for a few years, but in the past two weeks it rapidly increased in size! It also reached a size where defecating would become more difficult.
Photo #2: Here is his tail afterwards. Almost immediately after surgery he started wagging his tail!
The surgical site could not be completely closed since the tail has limited extra skin. A section under the tail was left to heal via second intention (the body creates granulation tissue to slowly heal the wound over several weeks). He appears to be doing great during his 2 week recheck! 🎉

Just a quick reminder that most of the food and desserts that you love for Valentine’s Day are toxic for your pets!

Did you realize that dark chocolate is MUCH more toxic than milk or white chocolate? And that xylitol in a lot of sugar free and baked goods can cause life threatening low blood sugar in your pets?

Baby season is here! One of our assistants, Teagan, is just finishing up bottle feeding these little ones. Whether it’s lambs, calves, piglets, puppies, or kittens - you name it, we’re seeing it.
Notice how we repurposed that Dr. Pepper bottle?!

February is coming up which means it’s Dental Month! We have availability still, so give us a call before slots fill up.

Why are dental cleanings worth it? Just swipe through the photos to see! Details on each photo are below:

Photo #2 - The x-ray shows periodontitis with bone loss and the tooth with the black hole in the middle of it had a cavity that was large enough to require an extraction.

Photo #3 - After scaling off the calculus along the gum line, we were able to see severe pocketing and root exposure, which can be very painful.

Photo #4, 5, 6 - We had a dog come in after biting a moving vehicle’s tire. We thought the jaw might have been fractured, but dental x-rays showed the jaw was intact. We removed the canine and the last photo shows the space left behind immediately after extraction.

In two shakes of a lamb’s tail, Gus was ready to help this little lamb warm up from hypothermia (low body temperature)!

When hypothermic animals come in, we warm them up in a controlled and safe manner. This lamb has a heating pad, a bear hugger, and our resident cat Gus to help him warm up.

We have a new employee at EAH! Please welcome August, aka Gus! His resume includes the following qualifications and skills:
- He is polydactyl (has extra toes) 🐾
- He sports an impressive handlebar mustache
- He is very sweet, chatty, and greets everyone with a loud purr and a head bump!
- He loves other feline friends! 😻

After a recent performance review, he has agreed to work on the following:
- Not breaking into pet food bags
- Not breaking into doughnut boxes 🍩
- Not walking on the keyboards
- Realizing that not all big dogs want to eat him! 🐶

He has some big shoes to fill following after our beloved Toe-Joe, but Gus said he’s up for the job!
