Many people often want a girl puppy over a boy. Two important factors people often use to decide whether a boy or girl is right for them come down to two things: potty training and personalities. We’ve decided to go ahead and weigh in on this topic to help future first-time cavvie owners decide.
When it comes to potty training, the obvious reason people tend to pick girls is because they’ve heard girls are usually easier to potty train than boys or they’re afraid boys will mark all over the home. While this is can be the case for many breeds, that’s not always the case with Cavaliers. So with that said, here’s our first hand experience with both.
For us, Cavvie boys are quite frankly easier to potty train. By easier we mean faster and with less accidents. Note the word “accident.” Girl Cavaliers take us twice as long to break as the boys, believe it or not, of being able to hold their bladders longer. Girls tend to pop a squat wherever they can when the kennel doors open in the morning. The boys, not so much. They’re typically ready to run off immediately out the doggy door to go potty outside when their kennel doors open. While we do experience our guys wanting to mark if there’s some down time in the house, it’s best to keep in mind that we have girls who are frequently in heat so they have girls to impress around here which means our opinion is quite skewed. Because of this, our boys wear disposable diapers in the house after they come back in from potty breaks. Since most dog owners will fix their boys and we have none to speak from experience on, we have to trust the experts on this one when they say that fixing the boys will reduce their desire to mark around the house.
So, who won that battle for us? The answer is that they’re even in the potty training and house breaking department, so let’s move onto Cavalier personalities.
Many people pick girl Cavaliers because they’re wanting a softer, gentler Cavalier to be a great addition to their already established families which often include children. Often times there is a bias that the girls will be more loving and the boys more unattached to his pack. We can humbly say that is no where near the case for us and here’s why: Cavalier boys will love their pack fiercely. He will take great pride in being the man of the house and will always be found by your side day or night. He’s not needy or overprotective, he’s just in love. He will show you that he absolutely adores the ground you walk on.
When it comes to the girls, Cavalier girls will quietly lay at your feet, on your sofa, or in a warm basket of freshly dried clothes. She will find you when you have food, be excited for company like you are, and totally lay on that floatie in the pool with you - so long as you keep her royal highness dry, of course. She is the one who will patiently wait for you to make time for her. 🐾
So what’s our take on it? Find the puppy that calls to your soul. You will know when you know when it comes to cavvies and the time you are blessed to have them will be something you mourn deeply when they’re gone. 🐾💖

No one said Cavaliers are exempt from puppy stage shenanigans but they sure do make it hard to fuss them while they’re in it! This is Pout from our 12/23/21 litter who turned out to be quite the diva. With a house full of kids of our own here at SLCKC, my kids would often call her “Pow, Pow, Pout.” Her momma shared this adorable video with us showing us that my hoomans have left their imprints on her heart. This is why we raise our Cavaliers with such love and care from the very beginning. Thank you, Magen, for loving Pout as fiercely as we did.
