KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING.. are these our wisest aids ?

François R. de La Guérinière (18th century):
“Knowledge of the nature of the horse is one of the cornerstones of the Art of riding; and all horsemen should make it a main point of study... Without this theory, practice is always uncertain."

Alexis L’Hotte (19th century):
“Nature is the first of all masters. Its book is the fairest, most knowledgeable of all books... the most useful to consult.”

Philippe Karl (21st century):
"The mouth is a crossroad of numerous biomechanical synergies. Strong or continuous pressures on the tongue or sensitive bars are painful and traumatic, physically and pshychologically.

Nowadays, we have enough knowledge (physiology, biomechanics, motion, balance, ethology) to reject counter-nature riding concepts. Therefore let us study how to put the horse 'on the bit' by the light of these sciences.".............................................................

CONSEQUENCES OF NOT KNOWING:
In a mindset of 'submission' and from the position of low hands with tightly closed fists, the only option is to pull backwards. This leads to an inward brace of forceful pulling or 'sawing' the reins, and a stiff back to still hold or push with the legs. Riders fixate on enforcing control and immediate obedience, there is no consent or harmony, no dignity, elegance or grace.

The lower the hand, the harder it acts on the hypersensitive tongue. Why this obsession with low handed riding? Tightly cranked nosebands preventing or stifling the horse's protests only make it worse, and more cruel.

In natural defence, horses attempt to protect their tongue by pulling it up out of the way, over the bit, to the side, or out. Failing that, they grind the teeth in tension and pain.

What on earth possesses an instructor to then advise a student to tighten a nose band for more torture? Without a chance for mutual conversation or dialogue, without a right of reply, the horse then reduced to a mindless senseless machine - a tool of sport or whim. I ask, is that why you wanted to have a horse?

UNDERSTAND YOUR ACTIONS
o Educate your mind and your hands, don't accuse the horse
o Understand the massive forces involved on frail structures
o Understand the consequences, short and long term
o Know the difference between prejudices & principles
o Ask questions, observe, reflect and reassess.
o Find confidence from curiosity, seek horse knowledge.

Edited 11/7/23: This post is about being aware of learning how to use your hands thoughtfully to communicate and teach with kind compassion, knowing why, and knowing how different positions and actions impact a horse. Whatever is in your hands. Be it a bit, a bitless or a neck rope. Knowledge and a kind heart directs a kind hand. Any gear can do harm in the thoughtless hands. We must fully understand the impact of what WE do with what we use.

Our horses are just like us. Panda jumps at everything, Buttons could care less🤣

06/30/2023

When you can't ride them, still bring them. I said it. Princess Buttons doesn't mind a bit, and doesn't even know that she can't run anymore with her girl. BUT she knows what it's like to be included. She feels left out & gets depressed when she's alone, given that she's been our ESA (especially Panda's) for the past 10 yrs. When we go for our trails and I let her lead with her nose in front of the car, I can tell THAT is her happy place! And she's even happier when she gets to pack the littles around❤️ Don't give up on them when they're old, that's when they need you the most..and for all of the love and support she's given over the years, she deserves nothing but the best retirement. Here's to 25 Princess! We love you

Dear Cowgirl,

Yes you, the girl reading this who is more comfortable in boots and jeans than a dress and heels.

You're still wondering if I'm talking to you aren't you?

Well I am.

You're the girl who would rather be outdoors than in a shopping mall.

The girl who would probably rather have a beer and a BBQ than go clubbing.

The girl who turns on a truck and drives down dirt roads instead of taking the subway.

The girl that saddles a horse, gets on a tractor or puts on her boots for her work week.

The girl that doesn't have perfectly manicured nails, but a smile on a sunburnt face.

Yes you.

Society shows us pictures of what we are "supposed" to be everyday as women.

But here's a lil reminder for you, if you are needing it....

You are perfect the way you are.

If dirt and sweat are more common to you than heels and diamonds...

Girl, you're beautiful in a way no one else has.

Just because you're a cowgirl, farmer, horse lover, rodeo gal, ranch wife, farrier, full time cowboy, or just plain outdoors-woman....doesn't mean you're any less cause you don't rock wall-street in a pair of heels.

It makes you beautiful in your own unique way that no one else has.

Don't let anyone tell you differently. ©Adrianbbrannan 💕

Dear Cowgirl,

I hope you’re weird.

I hope you’re whacky.

I hope you’re safe in body and never in chances you take.

I hope you stick out like a sore thumb, or blend into the background given what your soul requires.

I hope you don’t allow heartbreak to turn you away from love, that you sing at the top of your lungs, and dance your way to the pickup every time.

I hope you remember to hold hands, to say what you feel and damn the world’s expectations.

I hope you realize that a life lived with simple joy is better than any kind of false perfection social media portrays and grandparents won’t always be around …take the time to sit and listen a while.

I hope you have joy, purpose and strong belief in a higher power that you’re able to depend on when the power goes out in the world.

I hope you have love, I hope you have hope.💕 ©AdrianBrannan

LADY MOE: From inside the archives we meet Lady Moe. While some servicemen were known for adopting local dogs and cats, the 96th Bomb Group found another pet to take under their wings.
In August 1943, a crew from the 96th Bomb Group acquired a malnourished 50 pound donkey during their time in North Africa after flying the Regensburg shuttle mission. The donkey, who the men named Lady Moe, survived the journey and experienced her first combat mission when the crew bombed Bordeaux, France, en route to England. After the plane landed at Snetterton Heath, base of the 96th Bomb Group, Lady Moe became famous among the rest of the servicemen, who took great care of her. She enjoyed eating ci******es and food from the mess hall, and spent her days roaming freely around the base. She joined ground crews and support personnel as they anxiously waited for B-17s to return from missions. As a foal with a gentle personality and soft coat, she bunked with servicemen in their barracks. She quickly grew into a 150 pound shaggy coated creature with an ornery temper, according to a March 1944 article in the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Although she lived a pampered life, Lady Moe also had a duty to perform. She appeared as a featured guest at public relations and charity events in England, where children and adults lavished attention and treats onto her. Newspaper and magazine circulations published numerous articles about her exploits on and off the base. Lady Moe also made an appearance in V-J Day celebrations at Snetterton Heath in August 1945, where she remained after the war. On 3 October 1945 Lady Moe’s life came to a tragic end when she was hit by a train after she wandered onto a railroad track. Her death was reported in several newspapers to the shock of the men who cared for her. She was buried at the base. In the years after the war, the men of the 96th Bomb Group remembered her fondly, whether it was a shared cigarette or avoiding her teeth in their attempts to pet her.

I don’t know how much longer we can do this…
Rescue is just getting harder and harder, we’ve been doing this 17 years currently have 60 horses and it’s the hardest it’s ever been. Prices just keep going up and up… In just two years our feed price has tripled, hay has doubled, vet bills are getting higher, farrier is getting higher.

We’re working as hard as we can doing real estate to bring in money to pay for the horses because donations just don’t cut it. We barely get much in from sponsorships, and other donations. We get no grants or government funding… and our medical care credit cards are full

My health has been declining and I’ve been extremely sick, we’re trying to downsize but then more horses come in that need help and now we’re having to say no, something we’ve never done before. I have 5 more coming in over the next two weeks! We do adoptions but it’s hard to find good homes with the prices of care going up! The horses with lifetime medical conditions stay here in our sanctuary program because they need ongoing specialized medical care.

When I say we can’t do this without you guys I truly mean it… If theirs anyway you can help us we would greatly appreciate it! Just sponsoring a horse for $50 a month can help tremendously, if we had 100 people donate $50 a month that would help pay for the feed each month. Please consider donating and sponsoring as it is a tax write off for you and/or your business and it will help keep the rescue running! To sponsor please message me here and I can send you the form to sign up a monthly donation. Thank you ❤️🐴
