It's time for another ! This week we are featuring our Sitatunga.

Sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii) is a species native to the wetlands of Central Africa. Last assessed in June 2016, it is listed as Least Concern, but its population is declining (90,000-120,000). Destruction of its wetlands habitat, along with hunting and trapping, is the biggest threat to its population.

Did you know? Sitatunga have long, splayed hooves and oily coats that are well-adapted for walking through muddy, vegetated swamplands.

Happy first day of winter and !🌟❄️
This week we are highlighting our Roseate Spoonbills. In Amazonia, you will find our four, free-flying Spoonbills, two male and two female.

The Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) is a species of wading bird found primarily in South America, with smaller extant and breeding regions along the coasts of Mexico, Cuba, Florida, and the Dominican Republic. Last assessed in October of 2016, it is listed as Least Concern with a stable population of around 170,000 individuals.

These wading birds are known for their distinct, spoon-shaped bill used for foraging by wading in shallow muddy water, sweeping their bill from side to side, and detecting prey by feel. Roseate Spoonbills have a diet of small fish, aquatic invertebrates, and occasional aquatic plant matter like roots and stems.

Here’s an exciting update from Shannon, Animal Curator, regarding Mexican Gray Wolves and upcoming developments. Our dedicated team collaborated with LightHawk to ensure the safe transportation of our male wolves to New Mexico for breeding, as advised by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program. Keeper Jackie even had the opportunity to accompany them and witness their release into their new habitat. We currently have two Mexican Gray Wolves waiting for you to visit, they're cold-tolerant, so come out and say hello 🥰 #conservation #WeAreAZA
