Introducing my pick for the Fort Worth Mustang Show!!
This pretty girl is a Scarlette/Carmine(and my QH Mae) triplet on paper - meaning she’s a “14hh, 6 year old sorrel mare with a star and (at least) one white foot”

In actuality she is a 6 year old, 15hh sorrel mare with a star, the prettiest head, and four white feet 😄
I adopted her in the online auction in January, but had to wait until April 18th to get her! We don’t have a working truck currently, so a super sweet lady, Mrs Carrie, trailered her here!

She’s from Maverick Medicine, NV, which is an HMA I’ve never worked with before, I’m excited to see how different she is!

We’ve had quite the adventure already, before I ever got to actually train her though 🥴 My family was out of town for a week so she got to just hang out in the pen with my sister’s gelding… and they somehow escaped their pen and got out with the other horses in our big pasture! Surprisingly, I was able to get them herded into our arena, they did manage to get out but with my sisters help they are safely in their smaller pen now 😄

I’m super excited to start training her, when they were out in the big pasture she was trying to come over to me but then would get spooked. She was really brave though and would try to face me, and even start to come to me, so I’m hoping she’s pretty confident overall! She also seems SUPER balanced on her feet and put together well… also she’s at LEAST 15 hands tall 😂

Have you worked with a Maverick Medicine before? What’s your opinion?

Also - I need help with a show name! What should I do?

She will be available at the Fort Worth Mustang Show in September! Please like, share and comment to follow along on our journey to finding her a forever home!

Makeover pics! Carmine was the best girl!! I had not prepared her NEAR enough for everything she had to handle, but she was so calm and handled everything like a pro! Horses everywhere, in an arena for the first time, wash stall, saddled multiple times a day to wait for FOREVER for our turn… she was so sweet and chill! We had only loped 11 rides when we got there, but she loped the correct lead each class!! (Not great, but the best she had done!)

She was literally perfect in our first class, handling and conditioning, earning us a tie for 3rd place… with the horse that ended up winning the whole competition!!!

She did get really bored and tired of doing nothing while waiting around but loved when I took her out to graze 😄
At the auction, I was the first and only bidder and brought her home that afternoon!
Since then I’ve been riding and having fun with her, and she’s only gotten better! Her lope is super comfortable now, we’ve been working on neck reining and hindquarter control. She’s got the best mind - I even let my non horsey (now husband) ride her and she took great care of him! She’s been mostly hanging out in the pasture but whenever I get to go out to the pasture she comes over to say hi, and when I get to play with her or ride she does as good or better than the time before! (And yes, she has gotten bigger; I’m pretty sure she’s 16hh now 😳)

Is your horse kid-safe or husband-safe? My other mustang isn’t, but Carmine for sure is!

Before I COMPLETELY redo this account though… I had to finish up Carmine’s story! I’ll do another post with Carmine-Makeover pics as well 😄
Carmine is absolutely amazing, she is SO much fun to train and just ride! She got even bigger, safer, calmer and relaxed so well, especially as she learned where her legs are 😂
At the makeover she was WAY better than I expected (including TYING FOR THIRD PLACE in our first class) but the main thing is that she was calm and tried so hard to do what I asked!! I was so proud of her!
And yes, the goal was to find her a home after the competition… but as you can probably see, I just couldn’t let her go 🤦‍♀️😍
She’s got such a good mind, I can leave her for weeks and she picks right back up where we were! Especially with how busy my personal life has been (if you follow my main account you’ll know) she has been mostly just hanging out and being a horse.
If you swipe to the last picture you can see part of what her new “job” is 😁
I’m so, so excited to keep training her and having fun with her! I’d love to teach her to be a pack horse someday, to take on hunting trips and epic trail rides!

Any questions? Have you ever planned to sell a horse but ended up keeping them? 😄

Monday, Day 34-Sunday, Day 47!
I did some more ba****ck mounting prep, since her pen was a little slick for me to actually do a good ride, so I worked on helping her find her balance with shoulder and hindquarters yields and just taking a few steps. She was really relaxed, even though she’s so tall I kinda have to jump/wiggle/climb onto her. I also worked on her not being as head shy, she’s okay, just doesn’t like her mouth being touched or me walking at her face quickly. Then… we left on a week long family vacation in Florida! So she got another week and a half off, basically. When we got home she again was right back where I left her, mentally and remembering wise! I was really impressed with her! I also brushed her really well and took progress report pictures, she doesn’t have the most photogenic face but I love her forelock!

How does your horse do after time off?

Monday, Day 26-Sunday, Day 33!
SO many firsts - First Sit, first Saddling, FIRST RIDE!!!
Carmine continued to amaze me with how confident she was with new things, especially the saddle and me being on and above her! She was super chill with me jumping and sliding and bumping into her, and was really relaxed with me getting on her ba****ck. She didn’t offer to buck or anything with the saddle on, and when I got on her she literally relaxed MORE! Lowered her head, yawned, licked and chewed - she honestly felt the most relaxed with me on her that she had yet! She did take a few steps of HQY when I got on her, but it felt like unbalanced steps, but she never got tight in her back or tensed up, it was so amazing! I just asked for a few steps this time, we’ll build from there!

Do you practice getting on your horse ba****ck first?

Monday, Day 19-Sunday, Day 25
I had a great week with Carmine! She literally picked right back up where we stopped when I left for a week - and she was only a week and a half from the wild! It was super muddy and slick with all the rain we’ve been having, but we were able to work on leading, getting her comfortable with me around her, and getting her more used to my tools and different things. She likes me at her withers, is learning to like face rubs but lets me halter her fine.

She handles new things really well, I LOVE watching her think through things and figure out what to do, she’s going to be such a fun horse to ride places! She is SO chill with me jumping around and acting all crazy, if the ground was better I would totally have gotten on her ba****ck! I just didn’t have a good pen to work in, yet, so I focused on getting things better. She had a harder time with head down, but started to figure it out (like on her own, when I was just doing things).

How does your horse do with you being silly around them?

HELLO EVERYONE! I am SO sorry for disappearing, yes, we are alive and well and just crazy busy!! Carmine has been doing SO good! I’m going to post chronologically, so this is from way back in March/April!

I spent some time with Carmine on the weekend, and worked on leading. It was really hard to do with all the mud though. I left on Monday, Day 12 for a week in Texas doing two clinics with ! My original plan was to bring Carmine, so I got up early to work on trailer loading, but one of the other horses I was bringing wasn’t too happy with loading in the trailer, and it was too muddy to bring the trailer close to her pen. I hadn’t led her out of the pen yet, and it would have been a long walk, through the gate and past the house and a bunch of things that she hadn’t met yet so I made the hard decision to just leave her home and took Skye, my forever mustang with me.
I had a wonderful week, I learned so much, met old friends and made new ones, and got to hang out with my extended family who lives around there! I got up EARLY and drove the 9 hours back by myself on Monday, day 19! Carmine was literally THE SAME or BETTER as when I left - I cannot believe the mind on this girl!

I will be posting every day until the makeover - I’ll be catching up to present day soon, I have SO MUCH to share!

Do you have any questions? Anything you want to know about Carmine?

04/15/2023

On Monday, day 5, I had my second actual training day! I was able to make a lot of progress with her, though I didn’t get to halter her. I did put a lariat on her, and she let me pet her and move it around and we were able to start following a feel with hindquarter yielding and a few steps forward! She didn’t really have a problem with feeling the rope on her, but leaned pretty hard before figuring out to turn and face me. I did a lot of asking her to just look towards me, and she started to understand it better. She let me take the lariat off no problem and pet her.

Tuesday, Day 6 was super rainy and I wasn’t really able to do anything with Carmine. But Wednesday, Day 7 was awesome!! It was really only Day 3 of actually training her, and we did our first haltering! She’s really good about being petted on her neck and back, but wasn’t sure about her head. So I worked a lot on that, I used the whip to get her used to everything as well as the lariat, and we ended our first session of the day with getting the halter on! I let her wear it about a minute, then she relaxed so I took it off.

Thursday, Day 8 was Awesome!! Carmine made SO much progress! I brushed her mane and tail, picked up all four hooves, petted her all over, worked on leading and lunging, yielding and backing, and she did SOOOOO good! I didn’t lead her out of her pen yet, but we’re almost there! I’m really impressed with how well she thinks through things! She leads pretty well, better on her left side but we made a lot of progress on her right side too! She lets me walk up and pet her, she tends to lean her head away but is learning to turn back towards me!

Friday, Day 9 was SUPER rainy so I didn’t get to do anything with Carmine except pet her a bit when it was feeding time. It was thunderstorm-and-lightning almost all day.

I haven’t done near as much journaling about what I did, do y’all want me to do more “general” posts or go back to doing detailed ones, once I catch up to where we are now?

On Saturday, Day 4 I spent a little time with her in the morning and evening, but didn’t get to really train her any. On Sunday she ate alfalfa from my hand, I got to spend a bit of time with her at the morning feeding. At some point in the middle of the night she banged/scraped/rubbed her face on the panel (not bleeding, just hair missing) but seems to be fine. She lets me walk up to her left side, not her right side yet.

I’m really excited to get to work with her more, what do y’all think she’s going to be good at?

Day 2 with my new mustang… meet Carmine!!!!
I still have to come up with a good show name for her, but I feel like Carmine fits since it’s a color of red (like Scarlette), ends with an E, and is a little unusual. My nickname for her is Smart Girl 😄
I had a really good day with her, though a little eventful as well - She got a health certificate for our trip coming up soon!
I did get to spend about 20 minutes working on haltering her before the vet came out, but didn’t get a halter on. She is pretty sensitive about things near her head, and she really doesn’t want me on her right side yet. She did good though, she’s really good about turning and facing me! She lets me walk up and pet her pretty well. I was able to work with her some in the afternoon as well, at liberty getting her used to being petted more - I can pet her neck, shoulders, back and sides on her left side, and started petting over her back some. She’s really good about that, and I was able to get closer to her right side as well! She doesn’t want her face touched, so I worked on approaching and retreating with that.

On Saturday, Day 3, I spent a little time with her in the morning and evening, but didn’t get to train her any. On Sunday, Day 4, she ate alfalfa from my hand, I got to spend a bit of time with her at the morning feeding. She somehow scraped/rubbed her face on the panel (not bleeding, just hair missing) but seems to be just fine. She lets me walk up to her left side, not her right side yet.

Does your horse like to have their face petted?
Do you have any show name suggestions?

Day 1 with my makeover mare - SHE IS AMAZING! I spent a couple minutes with her, technically, at the morning feeding, aka I didn’t just walk in and feed her. After breakfast I went out and worked with her… AND I GOT HER TAG OFF IN AN HOUR! She is Super good at facing me, she even started to take a step towards me! I did lots of approach and retreat, I didn’t have to ask her to walk or trot much at all. She is sensitive about being touched on her nose, she’s much more comfortable with me close to her neck. And she really doesn’t want me on her right side yet.

So I mainly focused on getting close to her left side, and then resting with me on her right side. She let me pet her nose a bit, and then I worked on getting close to her neck and she let me fiddle with the neck tag, and then just work it loose and take it off, didn’t take a step away! I stopped there for our first actual session.

In the afternoon I went back out and worked on petting her more, she let me pet all on her neck, shoulder, and down her back, on her left side! I was able to start working my way towards her right side some, but she still preferred me on her left side. I also introduced the halter to her, didn’t put it on just petted her with it. And we finished the session with a bunch of yawning!!
My mom came out to see her so I spent a few minutes with her then as well.

I am SO impressed with how well she learns things, and how quick she’s been! She isn’t super curious with her nose, but is really good with touch and with facing me and even yielding her hindquarters!

Have you had a big difference between horses and tag-taking-off time?

Meet Tag #8033, my mustang for the Tennessee Extreme Mustang Makeover!! I am SO excited to train her - she is SO SIMILAR to Scarlette!

About her:
She is a 6 year old sorrel mare, from Coyote Lake, OR! She was rounded up in October of 2021! She is 14.2, with a pretty solid build. She has a tiny snip and a beautiful Diamond on her forehead, a really long forelock, decent mane and pretty long tail!

We did get a tiny first touch in the trailer, and then she almost stuck my finger up her nose trying to sniff alfalfa I was holding 😂
After my most recent adventure, I’m super thankful to say that our trip was uneventful and we made it home safe and got her settled in before dark!

She was SO calm about loading, literally walked in. She seems to be really smart, she thinks through things pretty well and I’m super excited to see what we can do!

Do you have any questions? Comments? Name suggestions? I would love to hear what you think about her - I’m kinda freaking out since I need to name her now 🥴😂

I will be posting lots of videos and pictures on this account, and will be changing the name for her!

Two of my sisters also are competing, in the youth division, and they got two adorable fillies! Hosanna got the darker and Grace got the little sorrel. I’ll try to update y’all on them too! (Swipe to see them)

Our Freestyle Practice!!! We didn’t get to perform it because we weren’t in top 10, but it was fun to work on it! Our theme was Mission: Impossible (because it felt impossible what I was attempting… and because I love the music 😄)
The mission was to stop a bomb from blowing up 😁

I’d love any suggestions/ideas/critiques or things you liked about it!

Our Third and last Class of the Extreme Mustang Makeover - Trail!
This was my least favorite class, but it was still awesome! I definitely need to work on a lot of things, but Scarlette did almost everything I asked! For this class, we had to open, go through and shut a gate, lope over a pole, trot around cones, go into a chute, back and turn, sidepass over a pole, trot over a pole, cross a bridge and do a turn both ways.

Scarlette did great on the gate, I was able to do it one handed (keep my hand on the gate the whole time), and she picked up the correct lead. She didn’t hold it very long, but I could have asked better. She startled at the pole, but crossed it in a couple seconds calmly, which I was proud of! We trotted around the cones, I think she slowed down too much (at this point I was way overthinking what I was doing and probably confusing her horribly, just in how I was asking for things and trying to remember everything).
She did really good going into the chute, backed and turned great! Sidepassing wasn’t the straightest, but I did it with loose reins (I should have shortened them and asked for more correctness, but I wanted to see if she would do it like we had practiced). She trotted okay, to the next pole, slowed down but crossed the bridge really great (it had bothered a bunch of horses).

However, I was so excited that she crossed the bridge that I pretty much “let go” with my focus and she drifted right over to the wall, which didn’t leave us set up for our turns very well. She did what I asked, but I didn’t ask right and so they were pretty bad. But I was so proud of her, and it was a lot of fun! I got to learn what the judges are looking for, so next time should be better! After this class I sat on her in the alley and watched a bunch of the other competitors, and she fell asleep.

We got 32nd in this class, which was a little disappointing, but I’m also SO PROUD of Scarlette for not freaking out and for being so much fun to ride!

Have you done a trail class? What did you do best at? What was the hardest?

01/27/2023

Hi everyone! I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize these didn’t post!!

Our Second Class of the Extreme Mustang Makeover (and first Ridden one) - Mustang Maneuvers!
This definitely DIDN’T go as planned - but I am SO SO proud of Scarlette! It was our first time riding in front of judges like this, and our mess-up was TOTALLY my fault. We had markers along the wall where we had to transition to different gaits. The pattern this time was Enter at walk > trot > extended trot > lope left lead > stop and reverse (turn and face the other way) > walk > lope left lead > trot > stop and backup.

Scarlette was a little more “forward” than usual, which was kind of fun. She extended her trot, and picked up the left lead really really nicely, which I was super proud of! It was going great… until I got off balance, so she stopped to try to save me. She didn’t freak out at all, just tried to do what I was asking. I couldn’t help laughing the rest of the ride, she was doing her best! We didn’t get a walk to lope, but we did get the right lead which we had had a harder time with! She trotted and stopped, our backup definitely could have been better, but I was so happy with her!

We placed 21st in this class, which I’m really proud of! She did her best, and I learned what to do better next time!

Have you shown under saddle? How did your first show go?

And a huge thank you to my friend Lily for videoing!

Our First Class of the Extreme Mustang Makeover - Handling & Conditioning!
I was so proud of Scarlette, she wasn’t bothered a bit by the crowd, loudspeaker or anything… so much so that she rolled thoroughly in the round pen 😂

I had never shown before, but she did amazing! We got 11th out of 55! She stood great when I asked, trotted right off, and loaded into the trailer - even though the last time she saw one was when we unloaded after the 9 hour trip! She didn’t stand perfectly in it, but backed out when I asked.

(And yes, they did call me “Elaina” Stewart 🤦‍♀️)

WOW! This weekend at the Extreme Mustang Makeover has been an absolutely incredible experience! My very first makeover and first show!
Congratulations to EVERYONE who competed, I know it’s not easy and everyone was so amazing! A special congratulations to the top 10, I LOVED the freestyles!

I am so impressed with and proud of Scarlette, she was honestly one of the most relaxed and chill horses there. She was so sweet and LOVED all the petting and attention.

Scarlette and I placed 11th in Handling and Conditioning, 21st in Maneuvers and 32nd in Trail (due to my miscuing). She actually did everything I asked, I just forgot some things. We finished in 25th overall, out of 55!

I am so grateful I was able to do this, I have learned so so much! First off I want to thank the Lord, for the many blessings and things that should not have worked out the way they did!
I want to thank my mom and dad, Ben and Nili there is no way I could have done this without you! Y’all have been amazing!
I want to thank all of my family, those able to be there in person and those who supported through text and prayer, it means so much to know all of you care! And especially my sister Talia, who also competed, in the youth division. Great job T!

I also want to thank my wonderful friend Lily who flew from Idaho to Arkansas to drive to Texas to meet me for the first time and come support and help (a bunch)! And thank you for all the photos and videos!

I have made so many new friends, during the training and at the makeover, all of you were so nice and friendly and encouraging for my first Makeover and very first show! Thank you!
Camille's Mustangs (who WON!), Ellen, Briley, Emma, Kaiann, Aila, Taylor, Hannah, Tori, Claira, Stella, Sarah, Laura and many many more!!

I also want to thank Rose Horsemanship for teaching me so much with Skye and other horses, that I was able to use with Scarlette (even though I’m sure I didn’t do a lot of it right).

And I want to thank Ruth for giving Scarlette an absolutely amazing home, I cannot wait to see everything you and Scarlette do in the future!

Oh - and there most DEFINITELY will be a next time 😄

Would y’all like to see videos?

Extreme Mustang Makeover update!! I’ll be posting in detail when I can, but I am SO PROUD of Scarlette!! She’s giving me so much, every time!! She traveled the 9 hours amazing, and was sooooo chill I rode her in the arena that afternoon and just hopped on her ba****ck and rode around the indoor that night!

We placed ELEVENTH in handling & conditioning, our first class of the day! Of course, she rolled, but swipe to see what else we did!

In Mustang Manuevers we had two big errors, and both were my fault - I got off balance and accidentally cued her to stop WAY too early, from a lope, but she tried 🤦‍♀️
And then we didn’t pick up our right lead right away. But she did everything I asked, and I am SO so so proud of how relaxed and willing she is!

She did just about fall asleep during the Meet the Mustangs afterwards though 😂

On Monday, day 107 we did some liberty, and leading practice, then let her out to graze. Later in the morning we did a bunch with a feed bag, making sure she was fine with it all over, dragging it, tossing it at her, etc. She did good! She relaxed and started stretching down and bending to the inside even when the bag was on the outside, so that was nice!

I did my pre ride check and asked her to yield from steady pressure in different ways, then I rode her and work on leg steering. She’s doing good, we had been focusing on steering with the reins more and getting her soft, but she’s doing nice with leg pressure! Then I rode her out of the pasture, we worked on our stops and practiced filming a freestyle version to get a feel for it. We adjusted a few things, but overall she was great! Walk trot and lope were good, stopping and backing and side passing got better!
I brought her out to graze after that, and just sat with her. We had a lot of fun!

On Tuesday we went on a trail ride! In the morning it was REALLY muddy and slick so we played with doing the obstacles more precisely, on the ground. She got better, and started really thinking through where she put her feet!

Around lunchtime we loaded up and went to our friends’! She was great with saddling and pre-ride check. She was pretty relaxed, we started with trotting on a loose rein.

We practiced some of the obstacles in there, and canter, she did get both leads and maintained pretty well! We practiced turnaround and stopping, a little bit of rollback practice, then went on a long trail ride… PONYING my sister’s yearling!! She did amazing, super calm, only got startled once when he ran up against her because of a horsefly. She kept him in his spot next to her, but left him alone if I asked or when he was walking along, she was great! We rode about an hour and a half, through fields and forest and creeks and down the road, with cows and pigs and she did awesome! I was so proud of her!

We finished up with practicing our freestyle again. Then we headed home!

Can your horse pony another horse? Calmly? 😄

On Friday I practiced some things we learned from the custom camp, worked on backing up to and onto things, and on putting effort into my requests. She was great! Friday evening I went out and just got on her ba****ck and rode her around, she was awesome! We walked around and finished with just sitting on her and petting her a bunch, spending time with her. It’s hitting me that I don’t have much time left with her, so I want to make sure I’m not just constantly asking her for things, but that she’s enjoying being with me too.
On Saturday and Sunday I brushed her a little, but didn’t do any training.

Do you ever just sit on your horse and enjoy the moment? It’s so worth it, especially at night when you can look up at the stars.

Wednesday, Day 102, l I helped my sister set up obstacles and freestyle props, then played with Scarlette working on responding better to yields, the tarp, Figure 8 and relaxing where I put her.

After breakfast I went to help my sister move the cattle, I was leading Scarlette and she went right to them! We didn’t end up getting them to the other pasture, but Scarlette did everything I asked! We practiced trailer loading, then I saddled her, and did some ground checks. I was more particular about what I was asking for and she did good!

Sidepassing got better, and head down, she was relaxed most of the time and when she did brace she thought through it and relaxed! I checked yields with the snaffle, then rode her in the round pen. We worked on stopping and stepping her shoulders over, then practiced loping.

She was good, we even got a few walk to lope transitions, and worked on keeping her shoulders under her better. We did some more work on transitions then rode out and practiced with the obstacles and tarp, and had my sister help by flapping the tarp around. Scarlette did really good!

On Thursday morning I did some more find-the-rest-spot practice at the tarp, bridge and other obstacles, and yielding her shoulders and hindquarters, she was great! After breakfast I went out in the later morning and brought her to the trailer and saddled her, then we played with some more plastic!

I flapped a plastic bag around, tied a piece to her leg and then did a rope around her hindquarters. She got concerned about it, then relaxed a lot more. I bridled her then rode her in the pasture. She wanted to go around and explore so we rode to the back corner and worked on loping! She was SO GOOD! We got more comfortable loping off and maintaining longer, it was fun!

We practiced transitions along the fence, walk, trot, stop and back, a little more loping on a loose rein, then went through the obstacles. She was awesome! Dragging the tarp, great with the bridge, poles, cones and more! I untacked and asked her to lay down. It was SO MUCH FUN!

How does your horse handle plastic?
