I love watching 2 dogs interact with each other. Can you guess by their body language which one is the higher ranking member of the pack?
Did you know that if a wolf (canis lupus) and a domestic dog (canis lupus familiaris) mate, a dog will come out?
This is proof that dogs come from wolves and are therefore genetically pack animals just like wolves. Use this bit of info when you encounter pack deniers:)
I love watching pack behaviors being acted out between 2 dogs of the same pack. This is a male and female. I apologize for the poor sound quality.
Current positive reinforcement training methods offer only half of the training dogs need. To train a dog you have to first train it to obey you the moment it is triggered thru one or all of its senses to do otherwise. For example, this can occur the moment your dog detects a deer or perhaps a strange person in its environment. Unless you can stop it on command, your dog is going to go after it.
These are completely natural response behaviors from dogs. In fact, this is your dog acting out its genetic response behaviors (GRB) that it inherited from its parents. To achieve obedience over your dog's GRB requires utilizing training methods for instant modification of its behavior the moment it is triggered. The methods adopted to do this are always lumped into the "aversive training method" category. An aversive training method is typically one believed to be exacting punishment or delivering a force to the dog.
Positive reinforcement methods using treats are not effective for behavior modification training. Methods adopted for the behavior modification of dogs came into popular use by necessity for dog owners to prevent their dogs from acting out their genetic response behaviors. These behaviors are typically the ones considered unwanted, aggressive, dangerous, or even vicious.
A dog will almost always snub treats being offered to it and go after the highly stimulating squirrel, cat, dog, or human it just detected thru one or all of its senses. Until you can achieve command & control of a dog the moment it is triggered thru one or all of its senses to act out its GRB on something, utilizing any positive reinforcement method in that moment and context has no place or effectiveness for preventing it from acting out the GRB and is a distraction at best for most dogs.
