Fancy Cats & Dogs is a nonprofit organization run by volunteers, with the purpose of rehoming cats that need it. A lot of these cats have been through hard times, so we do our best to make sure to match up every cat with the right human(s) for them. We are a 501(c)(3) charity and our money comes from donations so anything that you can do to help is immensely appreciated (United Way #98772)

Founded in 1997 by Cathy Awad, Fancy Cats now has four PetSmart Adoption Centers and 150+ volunteers. Our mission is to end needless euthanasia at shelters in the National Capital area by rescuing and finding suitable lifetime homes for our cats & dogs, promoting spaying and neutering, and educating the public on responsible pet ownership. Since our inception in 1997, we have found loving homes for 15,000+ cats. 🧸 Meet Bear — The City-Savvy Cuddle Bug!

At just 1.5 years young, Bear is the perfect mix of puppy-like fun and "good boy" manners. He’s already hitting the milestones every adopter dreams of!

A City Pro: Bear is completely potty trained and loves his long walks. Living in a busy area? No problem! He is unfazed by the hustle and bustle of city life—buses, trucks, scooters, and loud noises don’t spook this confident guy one bit.

World-Class Snuggler: Bear is a professional cuddle-bug. He’s ready with kisses first thing in the morning and is happy to keep the affection going all day long. If there’s a spot on the couch or a corner of the bed available, Bear will be right there to keep you warm.

🐕 Playtime Enthusiast: As much as he loves his humans, Bear is a "dog's dog" too! He loves a good wrestling match with his 2-year-old foster brother. He’s also a toy fanatic—he’s happy to entertain himself, but he’s always looking for a partner (human or canine) for a legendary game of tug-of-war.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Friendly: With a sweet soul and a gentle heart, Bear has done great with every child he’s met so far. He’s ready to find a forever family to share his toys and his love with!

🎄 A Christmas Wish from Shadow 🐶

"Hi everyone!
My name is Shadow. They tell me I’m only about 6 months old—I’m still just a baby!—but they also tell me I’m already a very good girl.

I am so incredibly thankful for the folks at Fancy Cats & Dogs Rescue who saved me from the euthanasia list and found me a foster home at a moment’s notice.

🎁 But if you want to know what I want more than anything else for Christmas this year, it’s a forever home of my own! Won't you help make my dreams come true?

Being a puppy, I’m chock-full of that joyful, lovable exuberance that everyone loves. My foster dad says I’m a professional at showering humans with kisses, snuggling up close on the couch, and romping around with my rescue dog siblings. The world is such a fascinating place to me! I love watching the sights from the window and trotting along on my walks to see what’s going on in the neighborhood.

I’m working hard to learn all my 'big girl' skills, too. My foster family says I’m making amazing progress—as you can see in my video, I’ve already mastered 'Sit!' I’m also up-to-date on all my shots and was recently spayed, so I am ready to go.

🐶 Meet Bubba — The Big Hearted "Lap Dog"!

Rescued from a high-kill shelter, Bubba is a soulful, 4-year-old darling who is ready to be the loyal heart of your "pack." With wagging tail and expressive eyes, he just wants to be wherever his people are.
Bubba is a polite gentleman at home. He is fully house-trained, non-destructive when left alone, and is doing great with his crate training! He is a quiet neighbor who doesn't bark at people or dogs passing by the window.

Bubba active & eager to please. He is an active guy who plays hard and naps hard. Whether you live in an apartment or a house with a yard, he’s happy as long as he gets his exercise!

• Skills: He knows his name, “Sit,” and “Down.”
• Motivation: He is very food-motivated (great for training!) and a total champ in the car.
• Hobbies: Running, sniffing everything on walks, playing fetch, and chewing on his favorite toys.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A True Family Dog: Bubba is a "big lap dog" who doesn't quite realize his own size! He handles the noise of kids, laughter, and play with total ease, making him a great fit for families with children of all ages.

🐕 Social & Friendly: Bubba is a social butterfly! He has done wonderfully with other medium and large dogs and shows zero food aggression or resource guarding. He’d be happy as an only dog or as a playmate for your current pups.

The Bottom Line: Bubba is looking for a kind, loving family to continue his training and give him all the snuggles his big heart can hold. In return, he’ll provide a lifetime of devotion and "big" cuddles!

Meet the League of Legends kittens: Jinx, Vi, and Echo!

This trio of 3.5 month-olds are certified pros with the litterbox, Roomba, cat carrier, and nail clipper, and love being held like babies. They were left at a high volume shelter with devastating euthanasia rates, but are now ready to embark on their next adventure- in forever homes.

Jinx is a charming boy who lives for lap time and will reach out his tiny paws to ask for pets. He starts purring the moment you walk into the room and never misses a chance to soak up affection. The biggest out of his litter, Jinx loves his food. He's found his voice to ask for food, but respects nighttime hours and courteously waits until he hears the humans are awake to start singing the song of his people. Jinx is a total lovebug who wants nothing more than to be close to his people, sharing cuddles and filling your home with nonstop purrs.

Vi is an absolute beauty with a sleek, almost solid black coat and the tiniest white patch on her chest- her own little signature mark. She’s the most playful of her siblings and goes absolutely wild for a cat wand toy and laser, scaling the cat tree to catch them. When she’s not busy playing, Vi loves rubbing up against you to ask for pets and attention, and plopping herself onto your lap. She has the cutest little squeak instead of a meow, and the softest, plushest fur that makes her impossible not to cuddle. Vi is a perfect mix of fun, affection, and snuggles.

Echo is the smallest of his litter, but has a huge personality packed into his tiny frame. While toys haven’t quite figured him out yet, he absolutely loves zooming around with his siblings and keeping up with the fun; he recently started pouncing on them. Echo has an impressively big voice but like a true gentleman, he saves it for the most important announcements (meaning, when he knows food is on the way). If you talk to him in a soft baby voice, he’ll melt your heart with the slowest, most loving blinks in return. Echo also loves pets and will happily show you his tummy while making biscuits.

👑 Meet Calypso: A Queen Awaiting Her Throne

Hi! My name is Calypso, and I’m a beautiful, big girl looking for my "forever" home. I was sadly surrendered when my owners moved, leaving me behind from the only home I had ever known. Because of this, I need a very special, patient human.

A Journey to Trust - I am slow to adapt to new people and places, and I may growl, hiss, and scratch until I learn to trust you. It took my amazing foster mom almost a month of patient talking and gentle persistence before I finally came out from my covered bed (my "safe space") to accept pets and love. Now, I love to come out for attention and purr my affection back! 😻 I just need a "cat-savvy" person who understands when I need a little "me time."

I have always been the only cat and prefer to keep it that way. I need to be the queen of my domain!
Dietary Preferences: I am a bit on the chunky side and need a diet, but I only like dry food (specifically Purina One Tender Selects Salmon 🐟, served on a plate). I don't like wet food or treats, but I do love catnip-filled toys!

Grooming: I recently had a summer "lion cut" 🦁 to help with grooming, and I think my new look is adorable!

Need for Patience: It will take time for me to settle in, but if you give me patience and love, you will be rewarded with an affectionate, purring companion. I have lots of love to give and will be a perfect addition to your family.
