Training should be vertical, you should always try to increase your dogās skill set. First we deliver one object, then two, then pick up the dropped leash, then the car keys, then the bottle of water, then open the fridge and bring bottle of water and on and on.

Real World Recalls!ā¦.your best bet on teaching a recall is working in a drive and getting speed back to you. Working inside on a long line, dragging the dog back to you after you say ācomeā is never going to translate to when the dog sees a squirrel. When it comes to recalls, speed is the name of the game
Bodie doing the 2 object deliver to hand drillā¦ for some dogs this is a lot harder than it looks and I am extremely proud of how far she has come the past couple weeks!

Nala helping new training dog, Koa, develop her recall. If you can get one dog to come when called, odds are the other ones will follow. Speed is the objective when teaching a recall
Owners doing the work! Our latest dog Dolly just went home a few days ago and it is great to see her owners putting in the work. A trainer can teach a dog anything, but itās gonna go out the window without maintaining that work. Every dog I work should have drills owners can do to make training fun for the dog and keep them sharp on the behaviors they have learned. Great work Dolly and Patti!
Repetition, repetition and repetition..and repetition. Do it fast, do it slow, do it differently. But keep repeating the action.
- Michael Stanier
Deliver to hand is more than getting Dolly to bring me a toy, we have to get her mind working, we have to get her doing something. If all you teach a nervous dog is ādonāt do this, donāt do thatā then be prepared for a shutdown lifeless dog. If you can teach them to do something, you start moving in the right direction and can start pairing the things you want around the new things they learn. Her heel is being developed and sharpened around the delivery and it is giving us something to work with
š“The anatomy of the perfect recall, getting your dog to come when called. A dog running full speed, turning on a dime and returning to handler at full speed. You can scour the internet and youāre not going to see off leash recalls like this on pet dogs, itās rare to even see this level of torque on the turn and speed back to the handler on a working dog.
šµThere are probably less than 10 pet trainers in the country producing this standard. Why is that? Most trainers agree that the recall is the most important command, but cannot produce an impressive recall on film.
š“The reason is most trainers are not training in āDriveā, they are more concerned about shutting down the excitement in order to get a stay and heel. That strategy will always extinguish a dogās spirit and kill the recall and produce an unimpressive heel. You can see that the dogās body language indicates that they do not want to be by the handler, but are being forced to.
šµGo look at other trainers catalogs and see if they are pumping out off leash recalls on multiple breeds time after time. Odds are they are not motivating the dog, but shutting down the dog and thatās gonna come back and haunt you in all wrong ways, building a world class recall will come back and benefit you in all the right ways when building a relationship and teaching your dog.
āThe eight laws of learning are explanation, demonstration, imitation, repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition, repetitionā - John Wooden
There is a strategy being employed with every dog I train that is based in repetition, new environments, knowing when to move into busier places based on the dogs body language, easy drills that can replicated by the owner, maintaining the dogs engagement and making sure the dog is having fun. You have to thread a lot of needles in dog training and create a harmony between a behavior and the dogs desire.
The Recall, getting the dog to come back to you when called has traditionally always been regarded as the most important command. Our entire foundation of training is built on the recall. A lot of people say they can recall their dog off of a squirrel, but I donāt see it very often. The goal is to not only get the dog off of the squirrel, but get them coming back to you as fast or faster than they were originally going
Home Depot employee: āthat is one very well trained dogāā¦ you know youāre on the right track when strangers start telling you!
Hanging out with my good friends over at Kranky K9. Itās always fun brain storming about the technical side of dog training with someone passionate about the subject. Bo is a great trainer and the only one in the area I would recommend to anyone. Keep an ear out for some collaborations coming in the future
Training Day with Rey. When your dog goes through any of our programs my goal is to get them into the real world and expose them to as much as I can so you are able to do more with them, giving them a more fulfilling, fun life!
When your dog trains with us we train all over town in real world environments. Me and my buddy Jasper hanging out at Opening Day, 2 years ago ā¾ļøšļø Looking forward to this season, Go Cards!

The recall is the staple of our training, we build everything on top of that foundation. You want it to be a reflex response, no thinking about what to do but a reaction. The spin around and the speed back to the handler are the gages to monitor how strong the recall is. We are getting there!
2 year old German Shepherd x Husky, Sasha has never been around kids and she has some little ones coming into her life so we are socializing her around my boys and getting her to pair children with fun and set some boundaries and expectations in her interactions.
š£ļø The Default Down
The down is the most advantageous position we can have a dog in when they are stationary and we are trying to influence or change a behavior. It is a relaxed, calm physiology that I always want dogs to see the world through.
The default and commanded down are different. The default down is a position we are training the dog to revert to automatically, the dogs preselected, go to, when in doubt option. The commanded down implies a consequence for not going into or staying in the position after the command, the default down is the dogs decision.
The sit doesnāt offer any psychological benefit, the down does. Calm, relaxed, especially when we can get them to lay on their hip. Any stimulus that gets the dogs psychology in a state we donāt want, the best option is start habituating the dog to that stimulus and one of the best ways to streamline the process is using the default down to your advantage.
