The most common dental question we are asked when a young puppy and kitten becomes a new patient is "how do I take care of my new pet's teeth?"

At PetDentistry.com we build the foundation for life long dental health during a puppy's and kitten's first 9 months of life.

First, let's use products that work! You will need a new soft child's toothbrush just for your pet, a tube of CET Toothpaste, and a bottle of Dentacetic wipes. We provide a free starter kit of all three items at your puppy/kitten first dental exam.

Second, the frequency of care is critical to success. Based upon studies let's plan to brush/wipe your pet's teeth once a day, every day. This trains the puppy/kitten to build the habit of expecting and accepting dental care on a regular basis.

Third, pick a quiet time and focus on just one side of your pet's mouth per day (alternate right and left sides every other day). On the top teeth start at the fang - one pass to the back teeth, one pass forward to the fang, and a final pass to the back teeth. Then flip the toothbrush/wipe to the back bottom teeth - make one pass forward to the bottom fang, one pass returning to the back teeth, then a final pass forward to the fang. This should take no more than 10 seconds total time. We teach you this entire technique-flow at your puppy/kitten first dental exam.

Finally, immediately give your pet a treat to reward them for accepting the dental care! Pill pockets are my go-to treat because they are a tasty reward and simultaneously trains a pet to take a treat that can be used in the future to give medication, when that becomes needed.

Stay well, Dr J.
