All of the commands we teach have an implied stay. This means if we tell a dog "down" the dog is to hold that position until we release them. We use the word "break" to tell them the command is over.
To achieve this we increase the duration of the command, increase the distance we can be from the dog, and increase the distractions going on over time. These are referred to as the 3 D's of dog training. We always set dogs up for success with a balance of successful reps and some reps that require feedback and guidance.
Barney is working very hard at improving his duration, distance, and distractions for his down command. We are very proud of him 👏🐾💙

No dog should be forced to actively engage with another dog or person, co existence is always the goal. Once Grace was feeling comfortable just existing around a stranger, we decided to throw some treats into the mix. Do not rush the process. Advocating for the dog's personal space and understanding what their body language is saying should always be a priority. 🥰💜
Barney learning to yield to leash pressure instead of pulling against it. We always want the leash to be loose (hence loose leash walking). When he gets distracted, I turn around give a quick pop and release with the leash and then praise him for coming with me. Always start with low level distractions and work your way up!
