The Civic Department of the Women's Club of Fall River had taken note of the plight of draft animals and began to wonder about the organization to care for them. After much discussion, the decision was made that the City needed a humane organization. A committee was formed and after much hard work and the recruitment of eleven members, the firs

t meeting was held in the parish house of the First Congregational Church in October, 1913. Plans were made and fund-raising began in earnest. The donations poured in and an old bam was purchased at 474 Durfee Street. An aging horse was donated, along with a blanket and wagon, and the stipulation that he be given care for the rest of his life. And with that beginning, the doors first opened on February 11, 1914 (incorporation came on June 25, 1914). In 1917, funds were donated to purchase the adjoining property, at which point runs and cages were added for small animals. The following Annual Report of April 15, 1926 captures the flavor of our early days: "Christmas dinners for horses were distributed as usual. ... bags of apples, grain and carrots to 80 horses who were found in the City and outlying districts that enjoyed a good dinner on Christmas Day thanks to the friends who contributed money and the ingredients for the dinners. Any balance Ieft after the expense of this annual event went into the fund for buying old and worn out not fit for use horses. The League is offering several prizes to the Girl Scouts for the best essays written on either of the two subjects 'Why We Love Dogs· or ·Some Pets of Famous Men·. The League has handled a very large number of dogs this year. Many are given up by owners to be humanely disposed of but the majority are vagrant and homeless dogs, strays picked up hungry and homeless, very often injured and dying in the City streets, often with collars but no name or license number to identify them. The automobile took its daily toll as well. The dogs at the shelter were made most comfortable this cold severe winter by the addition of nine storm windows on the dog kennels. When the League is called on for help, the question "Who will pay? is never asked. Animals First is our motto, and the compensation a secondary matter. And so, under modern and improved conditions the League enters upon the 14th year of service."

To better manage costs and improve care for our cats, we’re transitioning to pellet litter. This option is not only more affordable but also cleaner and healthier for our feline friends!

✨🏠Happy Tails: Orbit the spunky black cat is home! 🐈‍⬛

Orbit was adopted from our shelter in October and he has made quite the impression on his family. Here is a quote:

“Orbit is quite literally the craziest and funniest cat we’ve ever owned 😂 this little man has the craziest zoomies while his brother Oscar and dog sister Sox sit back and watch him destroy the living room crashing into everything 😂🥲 wake up every morning to Orbit redecorating 😭😂 Orbit loves to hid in everything and climb everything no height is too high for him h til he has to cry for mom to grab him down 😂 we call him our sweet abyss because you literally can not spot him. He’s been the greatest joy in our family and he’s become our son Cayden’s best friend. Every day our son leaves for school Orbit climbs our son’s bunk bed and just waits for his return snuggles with our son’s blanket. Also we have a gym room that Orbit loves to hang around when you’re working out he’ll “join in” on the treadmill lol and when you’re lifting weights he tries to push the dumbbells so I can’t lift them up”

Orbit sounds like the purrfect fit for his family, we could not be happier to see him so comfortable and loved! ✨❤️🐾

Meet the Staff: Meet Lauren our Volunteer Coordinator and Animal Caregiver! ✨🐶

🐾 Lauren started working with us in October 2023.

🐾 When you visit the shelter you will find Lauren scheduling/working with volunteers, helping the public, inputting animal data into our system, working on our website, and caring for our animals!

🐾 Lauren said her favorite part of the job is helping our animals all find loving homes!

👩‍💻Fun Fact: Lauren has recently re-worked our entire website to make it easier to use and up to date! This was no easy feat, and she did an amazing job!

🐶 Important Info:

They’re too young for their spay surgeries, but adoption applications are open now!
Adoption fee: $650, plus a refundable $50 deposit to ensure they return for their spay procedure.You’ll sign a waiver agreeing to bring them back for their surgery when they’re old enough.

🐾 Jen has been our Shelter Supervisor since 2023!

🐾 When you visit our shelter, you'll find Jen working on adoptions, processing applications, showing animals, and doing routine check ups on all of our animals! She is always ready to assist you and answer any questions you may have!

🐾 If Jen had to pick a favorite thing about her job it would be the care and love she is able to give all of our animals!

🐱 Fun fact: Jen is currently fostering one of our kitty cats!

“Ivy, my female cat that I adopted through Faxon, is a little treasure. She successfully learned to use the toilet and has been consistent ever since.
