If your dog is shaking their head, scratching at their ears, or whining when you rub/touch their ears, your dog is telling you that they are uncomfortable and/or in pain!
What are some things that can cause ear pain?
- Ear infections
- Ticks that are inside the ear canal
- Foxtails or Grass Awns
- Excessive hair growth
What can you do to avoid ear issues?
- Get your dog seen by your vet when you first notice signs of ear pain.
- Routinely look at your dogs ears and watch for excessive amounts of build up, excessive hair growth, excessive redness, or swelling
- If your dog has excessive hair growth, ask your groomer to keep your dogs ear hair clipped short. If necessary your vet may recommend sedation and manual removal of hair that may be deeper in your dogs ear canal.
- Use a flea and tick prevention to avoid ticks moving into your dogs ears.
- To avoid foxtails/grass awns try to remove any from your yard before they start dropping the seeds if possible. If you are taking your dogs to locations where they will be running/walking through tall brush try using a foxtail mask/net that covers your dogs head and ears and catches the foxtails before they can enter the ear canal.
Below we have attached a few pictures to show what we do not want any pet to endure. And the foxtail mask available for dogs who are going to be out in the brush.
