Heads Up!
We have increased our hours so we are open on Fridays! With our ever increasing clientele and the demand for veterinary care we want to try and be available.
Here’s what we can do on Fridays:
Appointments will be made for Ranch Calls ONLY!
No in clinic appointments will be made on Fridays
This means that there will be NO doctors physically in clinic, our doctor will be in the field traveling to see large animals.
We will have a receptionist available for taking phone calls, answering questions, medication pickups, and making appointments.
Unfortunately at this time we do not have the staff availability to allow in clinic appointments for cats/dogs and we are unable to offer emergency care for cats/dogs even during business hours on Fridays.
If you find yourself needing appointments or emergency care for your cat/dog on Friday please call elsewhere since we will not have the staff available on Fridays.
Otherwise our schedule has not changed and we are available Mon-Thurs for both small and large animals.
We appreciate your understanding and hope that this adjustment can help with schedule conflicts that can often arise.

PARVO is, and always has been, in Fallon! We have seen quite a few cases in the last month.

It isn't killed by heat. It isn't killed by freezing temperatures. The most commonly affected age group is between weaning and 6 months because that is the group usually not protected by maternal antibodies or vaccines.

Vaccination is the only safe way to really protect your dog and help prevent these outbreaks.

Symptoms to watch for include lethargy, not eating, acute onset diarrhea, vomiting and the ‘parvo smell'.

Attention Equine Owners! WINTER IS COMING!!

A big cold snap is just a few nights away and now is the time to remember all of the important tips to help avoid colic episodes in your horses.

Colics most associated with cold weather months are impaction-related. This is when ingested feed stops moving through the horse’s gut efficiently, the material can accumulate and form a blockage. Feed and gas then back up behind the blockage, causing distention of the intestine and associated pain.

So let’s review a few ways to help prevent colics!

1. Keep your horse hydrated!

Horses, for a number of reasons, tend to drink less in the winter. As simple as it may seem, frozen water is the most common reason we see for horses becoming dehydrated in the winter. A horse needs to drink from eight to 10 gallons of water a day, and that can be difficult if all they have is ice.
What can you do to keep water from freezing?
- Insulated buckets
- Water tank heaters
- Warm water
- Feed mashes

2. Electrolytes to Encourage Drinking!

Electrolyte supplements are typically readily available at your local feed store. You could alternatively use 1-2 tablespoons of table salt. This is the perfect addition to your horses mashes.
*Avoid adding salt or electrolytes directly to your horse’s water as this could decrease drinking if they decide they don’t like the flavor change.

3. Encourage Movement!

Your horse’s intestinal tract is influenced by movement. It may seem kind to to keep you horse in the barn during cold weather, but exercise is important too. Consider turn out or at least hand walking during the day.

4. Offer a Treat to Encourage Hydration!

Some horses enjoy “molasses tea”: 1 gallon hot water, 1 tbsp molasses, 1 tablespoon salt, and a handful of any grain or alfalfa pellets. Stir it all together and then fill the rest of the bucket with lukewarm water.

5. Be Vigilant!

Be sure to check your horses regularly and watch closely for signs of colic. A colicky horse in winter may not be especially sweaty, but be on the lookout for restlessness, dry and/or scant manure, lying down more than usual and “flank gazing” as he looks back at his painful sides.

And finally as a reminder our after hours emergency phone is an option for our established clients with horses. Be sure to leave a detailed message and you will be contacted by an associate to arrange services or options.

We hope you don’t need us, but we are happy to help when we are needed!

Has your cat ever experienced ear mites?!

Ear mites infest your cat’s external ear canal. Symptoms can range in severity depending on the level of the infestation. They can affect one or both ears, and their presence often causes inflammation and intense itchiness. Cats affected by ear mites will scratch at their ears and shake their heads to attempt to relieve their discomfort, and you may notice that their ears droop.

Can you imagine having HUNDREDS of these little creatures crawling around in your ears?!?!?!

What do you get when you mix a husky with a porcupine?
You get a bit of a prickly situation!

Did you know we have porcupines in Fallon? Well Nanook found out the hard way!

His adventure last night turned into a trip to the vet and the removal of at least 203 quills. From his shoulder to his muzzle, and to the tip of his tongue, this is one fight you would think he wouldn't want to repeat. By the way, this was the second time he's lost this battle!

Great job Dr. Beck and team!
