I need to go back to the barn…I'll be in the barn.

When people have come to visit over the years they commonly hear from me I'll be in the barn.

When life gets hard I'll be in the barn.
When things are just right I'll be in the barn.

When the sun shines
The rain falls
Or snow covers the ground
I'll be in the barn.

If things seem to be falling apart or if I'm celebrating the simple things, I'll be in the barn.

When I'm looking for answers or trying to clear my mind, I'll be in the barn.

When I'm looking for myself, I'll be in the barn.

If I'm working or trying to relax, I'll be in the barn.

Even when I'm not in the barn my mind drifts there, I find myself thinking about being in the barn.....

Readying feed for the next day,
mucking or spreading manure,
how to fix a problem I've been having with horse,
tack that needs cleaned or changed or mended,
wounds that need doctored,
if I need to put on blankets or fly masks.

It's where I keep my riches
All my wins and my failures
Everyone of my hopes
Dreams
Hardships
And memories

You can find them all in the barn, buried in the hay, hiding under a saddle, spilling out of the feed bins, or glimmering with dust in the evening light.

I may be covered in dust, dirt, a mash feed, hair, and hay, smell of sweat and manure, and sometimes there may be blood or tears but I'll be there. I'll be in the barn.

So if your wondering where to find me, I'll be in the barn. If I'm not there I promise I'm on my way.

Cricket ❤️

We got cricket in January 2023, she was a bag of bones.
This is her in march 2023 and then today!

She was saved from sextons kill pen, she was Un-tittled unhandled sick and poor.

We did a lot of work with her, as medicating a scared sick horse isn’t an easy job! We paid all the BLM fees had the inspections. She recently has been tittled to us!!

She’s now fat and heathy living her best life, she is one who never really enjoys human contact so she will live out her days and be a permanent resident here with us ❤️

But seriously fly mask are a good way to provide your horse some relief and comfort from summer pest, fly mask are especially important for blue eyes and light skinned horses! Fly mask help prevent sunburn on their sensitive faces.

Daily, before you ride, after you ride! Especially your shod horses!

If this rock had been missed it could’ve caused a lot of issues even if it was just unnoticed a few days!
And this horse had been turnout on a pasture that isn’t rocky at all!

Vet day

Having a vet that you have a good and long standing relationship with is so important no matter what kinda facility you have. A handful of pasture pets, 1 riding horse, a show barn, a rescue, whatever your doing on your farm it’s super important to have a good vet!
Vets are getting fewer and further between, so appreciate your vet! And be kind to them!!!

Our vet I’ve been using since I was a kid and had horses at my parents house!!!
He’s regularly out for us, checking up on rescues, doing PPE, and even just regular maintenance vetting.
He’s worth his weight in gold! Appreciate your vets!!!

This big guy is here to QT with us for a few weeks!
His owner bailed him from a kill pen in Kemp TX

QT is important for any horse coming from an unknown background, there’s many illnesses they can pick up that won’t show symptoms for 5-14days. So it’s important to have good QT practices!

Kill pen QT is one of the many services we offer here at riverside equine!

It’s always a pleasure to see these guys go from scared and unwanted, to excited to see people and loved!

Horse grooming!

We all groom our horses, even if they’re just pasture pets.

What do you keep in your grooming box and what are your must haves?

For us, our grooming box has;
Curry comb
Shedding blade
Soft brush
Hard brush
Face brush
Mane/tail comb or brush
Hoof pick
Hand towel
Show sheen (or similar spray)
Fly spray

These are essentials to throughly clean our horses! Grooming is a wonderful bonding opportunity and a wonderful health check opportunity. When you groom your horses regularly you can catch issues and abnormalities early on!

Let’s talk about it; THRUSH

What is Thrush in Horses? Thrush is a common bacterial or fungal infection in the horse's hoof.

Thrushes is black in color, and has a dead, foul smell.
Thrush typically affects the central frog or grooves adjacent to and in the middle of the frog.
Horses get thrush from poor hygiene, or standing in dirty, wet, muddy conditions.
Thrush is more common in the winter/early spring months, and is more coming in horses with existing hoof issues (club foot, poor maintenance, long feet, etc).

Thrush is easily prevented and easily treated!

Thrush can be prevented by regularly cleaning out your horses feet, regular hood trims, providing dry clean areas, and regularly applying thrust treatment in the wet/muddy months.
Thrush can be treated with a variety of products found at any feed store, most are inexpensive and easy to use!

Thrush left untreated can progress into a soft tissue, and turn into infection, causing a lot of pain and lameness and will be much harder for your horse to over come!

Spring is a wonderful time to get your horses teeth floated!
Horses should have their teeth floated once a year, although not all horses will need them done yearly they should still be checked yearly!!!

Routine teeth floating is important part of regular maintenance to your horse!

Routine care keeps the teeth and jaw in proper working order and prevents lacerations and sharp points from forming (both can be very painful). These issues can make it hard or painful for your horse to eat properly and have also been linked to behavior problems and poor performance!

Routine care is gentler on your horse and cheaper then treating advanced problems!

ALL HORSES should have their teeth done! Broodmares, pasture pets, minis, and donkeys should not be skipped or excluded!

Cash (previously Steve) is a Belgian gelding we pulled from sextons kill pen, he was overlooked and had no interest. He was advertised as dead broke and gentle for anyone.
In reality he was very untrusting and had been very mistreated.

Jenn and her family took him in. They’ve done an amazing job bringing him out of his shell, teaching him people aren’t bad, building a bind with him, giving him the life he otherwise would’ve never had.

Guess who’s been out of his sling and walking around on his own today!!!!

Still slow going, but major progress!!!
He went from not being able to support his own weight on his hind legs, to not being able to keep to keep his balance, to being a strong independent boy ❤️

We’ve settled on the name Maverick, it’s suits him!

One of the mares that came in with the old crossbred gelding, she went to her landing spot today, at Rolling Fork Ranch & Horse Rescue. Be sure to go like her page!

I was very thankful today for my chute, we’ve utilized it many times in many different ways.
Thanks to having it today we were able to safely (for her and us) get a halter on her, give her a long lasting antibiotics, and deworm her. All before loading up and heading home to her second chance!

This is where his new beginning starts.

He’s is a senior crossbred gelding, who found himself standing in a kill pen when he became old and no longer useful.
Like so so so so many horses do everyday, it’s really like trying to empty the ocean with a cup.

But anyways, this is his second chance that came almost too late.
He arrived yesterday down on the trailer and unable to get up, he was calm and alert. He just didn’t have the strength to get his hind legs under him.
So after discussion with everyone it was decided to let him rest overnight and see if he’d get up in the morning.
He didn’t. He’s old body just didn’t have it in it.
So we rigged up our chain hoist and our makeshift sling, and we got him back on his feet this morning!

I’m happy to have a happy update today and to say I think he will pull out of this set back and turn around. He’s much more steady on his feet, has a wonderful appetite (he LOVES food).
He still has a long journey to be out of the woods and back to health, but he will be worth it. He’s so kind and gentle!

Big guy needs a name! Drop so name suggestions below!

And if anyone wants to donate towards helping him (he’s going to need a lot of groceries!) I will not complain one bit!

We are going to slowly get him on safechoice senior in the next few weeks and he will need to be wormed a few times, lots of electrolytes to get his muscles rehydrated. And lots and lots of HAY!
