We got some good footage of Big Fess workout this evening. He is a nephew of Yukon Cornelius and also has Erin’s Hidden Shamrock as well as Hytest Skyhawk in his pedigree. He is really holding his point very well for not yet being whoa broke.

Here is a short video of Tanner handling his Doc Holiday dog. It is very important when working with your dogs that you handle them as much as possible to build trust with your hunting partner.

Last year I touched on a topic in which I get a lot of questions. “When should I start training my pup”? Many times people do their puppy a disservice by starting their puppy too young and they are not ready for the process. I simply tell people there is no set age. Your pup will tell you. Big Fess is a perfect example of this philosophy. At age 7 months, he had absolutely no interest in in the training process. He would not chase a bird wing much less point it. At 8 months old, he started chasing the bird wing but showed very little interest in pointing. He would not chase a flying pigeon. When taking him out on the gator, he would not cast a field. He would just walk around just happy to be out. However, three weeks ago something clicked with Fess. I had him in the yard with the intention of introducing him to a pigeon in a launcher which I do with every pup. I turned him loose not expecting anything. While I was getting everything set up for the training drill. I turned around and he was standing on point with his attention on the pigeon in the launcher. I said, to myself. “ Fess is telling me he is ready to start”. I approached him to see if I could handle him on point. He stood there like statue. He never tried to move and flush the bird. After a few minutes, I released the bird and he chased it for several minutes. This morning, I felt he was ready for some bird work in the field instead of the yard. Here is a pic of Fess pointing his first bird in the field. He did a great job. So the point of this post, is most people would have given up on Fess along time ago, thinking he was a cull when in fact, he simply was not ready. Just remember, when training a dog; it is not so important on how early they start but what kind of dog they will be when they are finished.

At this time, we would like to introduce the newest addition to our kennel. Our English Pointer male, Pugh’s Kentucky Bob Olinger. Bob has an exceptional pedigree and is going to be a great addition to our breeding program. I know some of you might ask yourself where do they get these names. Most have noticed we name a lot of our dogs after legendary and fictional western characters. The real Bob Olinger was a deputy sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico in the 1800’s. He was the last known person shot by Bill the Kid in 1881.

Now that I have gotten caught up on the hay and am officially retired. I have had time to start training the many of our young dogs this week. Today was German Shorthaired Wednesday. I had our littermate liver pups out this morning. Reno and Sophie. In this picture, I had Sophie doing a pointing drill to help develop her pointing instinct.
